Review: CLOSED CIRCUIT, What A Pity About That Government Conspiracy

Posted: 27 Aug 2013 04:00 AM PDT

Percolating without ever boiling over, Closed Circuit is a British conspiracy drama that's content to serve a cup of room-temperature tea, sit back, and shake its head with mild disapproval. What a pity, eh? The title refers to the closed circuit cameras that blanket London, and the efficient direction by John Crowley (Intermission, Boy A) makes constant reference to them and the unseen observers who are always watching. The original screenplay by Steven Knight (Dirty Pretty Things, Eastern Promises) feels ripped from the headlines: 140 people are killed when a bomb explodes in a busy market. The only surviving suspect, Farroukh Erdogan (Denis Moschitto), is held for trial; the British government decides that top secret evidence will be used to prosecute him, but it is...

Watch A Second Teaser For Kim Ki-duk's Controversial MOEBIUS

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Kim Ki-duk's latest has been stirring up controversy for weeks now and with Moebius soon to unspool in both Venice and Toronto it won't take long before we know what all the fuss has been about. And, heck, if you want a great big hint right now all you need to do is pay attention to the search terms used in the second, freshly released teaser for the film. Here's how Toronto describes it:Observed by their adolescent son (Seo Young-ju), a couple's fight over the husband's infidelity turns to a grotesque calamity. After failing to sever her husband's penis, the infuriated wife chooses instead to dismember her son in order to hurt his father. Family violence sparks a chain of events that culminates in a dramatic...

BREAKING: Matt Damon In Negotiations To Return As Jason Bourne

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 12:15 PM PDT

Is Jason Bourne making a comeback on the big screen? Universal is working hard to make it happen, with Twitch learning that the studio is in simultaneous negotiations with both Matt Damon and director Paul Greengrass for both to return to the Bourne franchise. We're told Damon is only interested if Greengrass is directing so there are clearly a lot of moving parts here but if all comes together we could be seeing the return of the director and star of one of the strongest American action franchises of recent years. And what, praytell, does this mean for Jeremy Renner and his Aaron Cross character? It's not an either / or scenario between Renner and Bourne with Universal planning to continue with the Aaron Cross stream...

Watch The First Teaser For MONSTERS: DARK CONTINENT

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Though Monsters helmer Gareth Edwards rode the success of his tiny budget giant monster movie straight to a gig directing giant budget giant monster movie Godzilla, his departure has not meant the end of the Monsters story. No, hidden away largely out of sight director Tom Green - best known for hit UK television series Misfits - has been working away on a sequel and the first teaser has just arrived.Ten years on from the events of Monsters, and the 'Infected Zones' have spread worldwide. Two soldiers embark on a life-altering mission through the dark heart of monster territory in the deserts of the Middle East. By the time they reach their goal, they will have been forced to confront the fear that the true monsters...

ISF13 Review: INCH'ALLAH Covers An Incendiary Topic With A Long Fuse

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Inch'Allah is a film that is already controversial. In its first session, playing as part of the Australian Israeli Film Festival, it has been pulled. A punter in Melbourne complained it was a propaganda film and biased against Israel in its presentation of the wall dividing Israel from Palestinian settlements. The festival head agreed almost immediately and the film is now scrubbed from the program in all states here.It is of course a sensitive topic, a relentless and frustrating experience for both sides of the wall, and is hard to really criticize without raising a few angry eyebrows. I would instead like to focus on the film itself, and how despite the gripping subject matter, the end result is a meandering poorly directed effort that...

Twitchvision's back after a week's hiatus, and we've got a couple of films to chat about that didn't quite make the top of the box office charts. Almost two years since I first saw Adam Wingard's You're Next with a Midnight Madness audience at TIFF, the film is finally getting its well deserved chance for you to see it at your local theatre. Meanwhile, Edgar Wright's sci-fi boozefest The World's End gets chatted about - be sure to check out my exclusive interview with the director here.As a bonus, I've also included my response on Friday to the whole "Batfleck" thing - sound off in comments below about what you think!Video embedded below....

George Romero, Robert Englund And Lance Henricksen Invite You To Save A Drive-In.

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Make a video viral and save a drive-in. I could, and will eventually, say more in a followup story but what's important is for as many folks who can to see this and vote. Yeah, maybe you've never been to Chicago much less the Midway Drive-In or Flashback Weekend, but you have your own memories of a time when cinema was synonymous with community. So do George Romero, Robert Englund and Lance Henriksen. Let them tell you about it. ...

Frightfest 2013 Review: DARK TOURIST Disturbs In All The Right Ways

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Why do we slow down to look at car accidents? Why do we put our hands in the moulded handprints of dead celebrities in Hollywood? Why are we obsessed with the lives of serial killers? There are the questions explored in Suri Krishnamma's chilling thriller Dark Tourist. With an incredible performance by Michael Cudlitz (from the TV show Southland), it is not an easy film to watch, but that is likely the intention. It is incredibly disturbing, not least because it asks the audience to question some of their own dark obsessions.Jim (Cudlitz) is a 'dark tourist', someone who visits homes/places connected with the dead. Though with Jim, is it perhaps a bit more macabre, as he takes his annual holiday from his security...

Frightfest 2013 Review: THE DEMON'S ROOK is Trippy, Old-School-DIY Fun

Posted: 26 Aug 2013 06:00 AM PDT

On my way into last night's screening of The Demon's Rook, a friend who had seen it asked me if I was a marijuana smoker. When I said no, he told me it might help with watching the film. Within a few minutes I could see what he meant. The film is a throwback to 80s B-movie horror films where the effects were hand-made and the story, well, didn't always connect. But this is not a bad thing; far from it.  The Demon's Rook is all about having fun with homemade movies, the kind you made in your backyard on the weekend with friends, where you sort of remembered what you filmed the previous weekend and tried to keep up with the narrative, but really,...
