TTTT: RUSH and GRAVITY: Two Cinematic Forces To Be Reckoned With Posted: 16 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT (TTTT, or "Tudor's Twitchin' Travel Tours", is an occasional column that sets out to traverse the vast terrain of cinema, as experienced by yours truly, Jim Tudor, a filmmaker and guilded American film critic. This time I'm comparing and contrasting the big one-word titled films of fall 2013, Gravity and Rush. Strap in, friend - it's about to get centrifugal around here!) "Life in space is impossible." Ditto that when it comes to life as a 1970s Formula 1 racer. At least, anything resembling an ordinary life is impossible. As rarefied as they were, such guys wore their deathwishes like badges of honor, as they were incapable of doing anything else. This way of life stands in weird defiance to that of spacewalking astronauts -... |
Almodóvar Hits Out At Spanish Government Film Policy Posted: 16 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT Pedro Almodóvar last weekend slammed Spain's right-wing governing party, the People's Party (PP), for deliberately killing the nation's film scene as part of a political war against it. Talking with Spanish website infoLibre, the writer and director took aim at what he believes is a systematic extermination of the country's filmmakers.Almodóvar's criticisms are in line with other prominent industry insiders. Just last month during the 61st San Sebastian festival, the new head of the producers' lobby, Joxe Portela, called for proposed financing reforms to be cemented to help the beleaguered sector. A move from a subsidy model to tax break model are mooted. Meanwhile, Enrique Gonzalez Macho of Spain's national film and arts academy had previously echoed Almodóvar's sentiments. PP traditionally has been at... |
Warsaw 2013 Review: Harsh Reality Shows Its True Face In The Dreamy CONCRETE NIGHT Posted: 16 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT Finnish film Concrete Night opens as a dream, and though it tells a riveting story set in a real-life location it stays in the dream-like realm throughout its running time, mostly due to gorgeous, properly muted, sharp and contrasted black and white photography, synced perfectly with a notable set of classical music pieces. While the story feels very authentic and its hard-hitting realism depicted through a series of scrupulously matched scenes of brutality and vulgarism might stay in one's mind for a long time, the way the film is depicted brings to mind a surprisingly peaceful yet graphic odyssey meant to serve as a ambiguous metaphor of sorts. The story of a 14-year old boy in search of his true identity somehow relates to the... |
Destroy All Monsters: The Poisonous Dread Of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 3 Posted: 16 Oct 2013 11:30 AM PDT Mine was A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. My first horror movie. The one that got pulled out of a Videoflicks hardshell rental case at the mid-October birthday party of some Grade 5 classmate whose name I've forgotten, and proceeded to scribble madness all over my psyche in a way that never entirely healed. We all remember our first time, sure; but I doubt many devirginizations are recalled with this kind of detail. I could cite the nightmare imagery from that film, chapter and verse, for years afterwards; when I finally caught up with Nightmare 3 on DVD decades later, I was amazed at how completely my memory remained intact. Seriously: sex, whatever. But a guy getting puppeteered with his own ligaments, in... |
Watch The Trailer For Fantastic Fest Award Winner COHERENCE Posted: 16 Oct 2013 07:00 AM PDT A great personal favorite of mine when it screened at Fantastic Fest 2013 - where it ironically picked up an award for Best Screenplay, ironic because it was largely improvised by the cast under the watchful eye of director James Byrkit, who had mapped out all the key events in advance - Coherence should prove a welcome addition to the scifi canon for those who pine for the days of Rod Serling and believe that big ideas do not necessarily require big budgets and big (if any) special effects. This one's a puzzle box and it's puzzling to me how we missed it when the trailer arrived online.Well, we've noticed now and you can take a look below. The less you know about this one... |
Watch The Amazing ABCs OF DEATH Contest Entry M IS FOR MUFF Posted: 16 Oct 2013 05:00 AM PDT As I'm sure many of you know by now, a sequel to horror anthology The ABCs Of Death is under way now and, once again, the project will include one entry selected from an open competition which is under way now with submissions for the letter M being accepted until the end of October. And while I won't pretend to have watched all of the submissions so far I have watched M Is For Muff by Mia'Kate Russel and if this is what's coming in then the bar has been set very, very high. You can check out all of the submissions here - and please feel free to suggest a favorite or two in the comments section below - and take a look at M... |
