DOC NYC, Largest Documentary Festival in U.S., Returns With Best (and Biggest) Slate Yet Posted: 15 Nov 2013 07:00 PM PST DOC NYC, in the four short years of its existence, has now become the largest documentary film festival in the U.S. This year's edition, screening from November 14-21 at IFC Center and the SVA Theatre, brings a vast selection of 132 films (73 features and 39 shorts), that deal with a dizzyingly varied eclecticism of subject matter and filmmaking approaches. There are films here about politics, music, art and artists, education, movies, and even porn (of both the hardcore and softcore kinds). With such a satisfying variety of films to choose from, you may find yourself asking: who needs fiction, when real life is capable of yielding such compelling stories?Below are some notable films in this year's selection. For more information on these and other... |
Posted: 15 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST With the sequel to Gordon Chan's martial arts fantasy The Four nearing release in Hong Kong the final poster for the film has arrived along with a series of striking - other than the font - illustrated character posters for all of the major players. One of which raises the question: What on earth is on Anthony Wong's arm? I haven't caught up with the original film yes so perhaps I'm missing something obvious but while the attachment has the look of an early machine gun the swirling patterns around it make me think ... vacuum cleaner? What on earth is that thing?Anthony Wong, Collin Chou, Chao Deng and Crystal Liu all return to reprise their roles from the first film. Check the new posters... |
A Near Perfect Representation Of Life In Rural Ontario Posted: 15 Nov 2013 08:45 AM PST I am a child of Barrie, a blue collar bedroom town north of Toronto mostly notable for the fact that people drive through it on their way to their cottages farther north in the Muskokas. It is not a place often (if ever) described as a cultural hub. Over the years my mailing addresses boasted such locales as Painswick, Minesing, and Shanty Bay while my high school was a feeder for the bustling metropoli of Angus, Stroud, Ivy, Utopia and other mid-Ontario farm communities. And let me tell you, the minds behind Letterkenny Problems have got it exactly, hysterically right. Very, very, very much recommended for fans of The Trailer Park Boys and the like. BREAKING: Tony Jaa Signs To Star Opposite Wu Jing In SPL 2. Posted: 15 Nov 2013 08:15 AM PST It has long been speculated as to when, exactly, Thai action star Tony Jaa would turn up in a Hong Kong action film and who he would star with should such a thing come to pass. Well, we now have those answers with word coming out of Hong Kong that Jaa has officially signed to star opposite Wu Jing in SPL 2 with production slated to start in spring 2014, presumably after Jaa's commitments to The Fast And The Furious 7 have wrapped up. Here's the official word:Tony Jaa has signed to star in SPL II which is being produced by Sun Entertainment Culture Limited. The film stars Tony and Legendary Assassin star Jackie Wu (Wu Jing), who probably has the fastest spinning back kick... |
Review: Sokurov's FAUST, An Extraordinary, Hallucinatory Trip Posted: 15 Nov 2013 06:00 AM PST Alexandr Sokurov's interpretation of Faust is one extraordinary, hallucinatory trip. It starts with Dr. Faust (Johannes Zeiler) dissecting a corpse, looking for/failing to locate the exact location of the soul. Living in extreme poverty, he tries to pawn his ring to a dark eyed, deformed, devilish pawnbroker (Anton Adasinsky). Instead, the pawnbroker convinces Faust to sign away his soul in blood (ink is expensive!) in exchange for one night with virginal Magarete (Isolda Dychauk), whose brother he just killed during a fit of rage in a bar brawl. Shot by renowned French cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel (Amelie, Harry Potter and a Half-Blood Prince, Inside Llewyn Davis), Faust is an amazing looking film. Even though it is not shot all in one take like Sokurov's festival favorite, Russian... |
Posted: 15 Nov 2013 05:00 AM PST The third and final chapter of a trilogy by US-based Italian director Roberto Minervini entirely dedicated to the study of rural Texas, Stop the Pounding Heart tenuously walks the line between documentary and fiction. It follows the day-to-day life of 17-year-old Sara Carlson ("star" of Minervini's The Passage) and her goat-farming family as she goes through a crisis of faith and identity in the midst of an extremely religious - fundamentalist, even - family for which the Bible sets all rules for life, and forms a subtle bond with bull-riding Colby Trichell (also seen in Minervini's other film Low Tide). This strange and intimate portrait, shot on the Carlson home with the actual family, defies classification and snaps a privileged, rare depiction of these people's... |
