Exclusive: Neo-Western WASTELAND Finds Its Outlaw Leads

Young Italian filmmaker Hermes Cavagnini has begun production on his second feature, Wasteland, described as a gritty crime thriller, and has named two of his outlaw leads. Patrick Sane played one of the White Supremacist bad guys in the final season of Breaking Bad, while character actor Tim Taylor nabbed a small role in The Hunger Games, among others. According to the official synopsis, Wasteland follows four modern-day outlaws who are "pursued by a female bounty hunter along the Mexican/American border, unaware that fate will throw them together in a most unexpected way." Shooting on Wasteland has started along the Rio Grande in Texas. The film is aiming to hit theaters in the fall of 2014....

After those two exceptional films, it felt that the director never quite found his place, doing horror and comedy remakes - in the case of a The Wicker Man, a comedy remake of a horror film - with interim breaks of going back to the stage. Belgium's Fabrice Du Welz is on a roll. There was a four year gap between his breakthrough effort Calvaire and the subsequent Vinyan followed by another five year gap between Vinyan and Colt 45, but though we're still waiting on a trailer for Colt 45 Du Welz is already in edit on the subsequent Alleluia while also prepping the South Africa set Children of the Gun. There's been no shortage of Marvel news lately. Phase Two is trucking along with the release of Thor: The Dark World (including a dispiriting first glimpse at next summer's Guardians of the Galaxy); Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. barrelling headlong towards the completion of its back-nine order for Season One; a rousing trailer for next spring's Captain America: The Winter Soldier; and last week, the announcement that Marvel and Netflix will collaborate on four (!) television series, and one mini-series, around the "smaller scale" heroes of New York City - Daredevil, Iron Fist, Luke Cage, and Jessica Jones. In terms of Disney's wholesale purchases of mega-franchises, Marvel is as hot as it gets right now. (Five years from now, Star Wars will be just as proliferate.)...

Marvel is reportedly in negotiations with key creative forces for two of their upcoming TV series that will be available via the Netflix streaming service starting in 2015. Daredevil, which revolves around a blind attorney who fights crime in New York's Hell's Kitchen, will be written by Drew Goddard, according to The Wrap. Goddard's television experience stretches from Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Angel (as a writer) to Alias to Lost (as a writer/producer). He wrote the screenplay for Cloverfield and made his directorial debut with The Cabin in the Woods. He also came on board to work on the troubled third act for zombie epic World War Z.
