TV Beat: GETTING ON, HBO's Newest Brit Adaptation, Strains Too Hard For Humor Posted: 25 Nov 2013 01:10 PM PST Fecal matter! Ha, ha!! Asian person speaking Asian language! Ha, ha!! Right up front, Getting On, HBO's adaptation of the BBC series of the same name, establishes itself as something in which I have little to no interest. Poop humor is not my thing, and resurrecting calcified jokes about people speaking a language other than English -- in modern-day southern California, no less -- is simply not funny, putting aside any thoughts of political correctness. The show is set in the extended care unit of a hospital in Long Beach, California, a facility that is under fire for not providing the level of service required. Much of the first episode revolves around Nurse Dawn (Alex Borstein), who is breaking in the experienced Nurse DiDi (Niecy... |
Everybody Drinks In The First Trailer For THE STRONG ANGEL INN (POD MOCNYM ANIOLEM) Posted: 25 Nov 2013 12:00 PM PST Wojciech Smarzowski's (Rose, The Dark House) latest feature is an excruciating tale about one man's persistent fight with a consumptive addiction and about love that can help his life get back to normal. Smarzowski's films are always controversial but Pod Mocnym Aniolem, based on Jerzy Pilch's award wining novel of the same title (loosely translated as The Strong Angel Inn), is boldly advertised as his most shocking and most meaningful picture yet.Jerzy (Robert Wieckiewicz) is a writer and an alcoholic. We meet him when he believes that he can actually win with his addiction. He falls in love with a young girl and finally feels that he has someone to live for. Unfortunately, he can't resist the temptation and one day goes straight to a... |
Bruce Dern Is Ready For His Extreme Close-up, Mr. DeMille! Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:30 AM PST Bruce Dern has been doing amazing character actor work since the 1960s where he started out as "third cowboy on the left" in a lot of television westerns, before joining up with Roger Corman's stable of regulars (Including Jack Nicholson, Peter Fonda and director Joe Dante.) If you wanted a wide eye, rather intense crazy fellow that was anything but predictable, well Dern was your guy. Alfred Hitchcock cast him in a couple of films before notable 1970s directors such as Sydney Pollack, Walter Hill and Hal Ashby effectively made use of his talents in everything from crime films to heavy dramas where Dern was nominated for an Oscar, something in 2013, with the black and white dramedy, Nebraska, his first leading role since Douglas... |
GOTHIC LOLITA BATTLE BEAR: Check The Full Trailer For Iguchi's Latest Oddity Posted: 25 Nov 2013 11:00 AM PST Nobody does weird quite like Japanese cult director Iguchi Noboru. First rocketing to international attention with titles such as Machine Girl and Robo Geisha, and though he's been featured in some of the world's most prestigious festivals since - Karate Robo Zaborgar premiered in Rotterdam, for instance - he's never backed away from his trademark oddities. And with Iguchi soon to return to Japanese screens with the January release of Gothic Lolita Battle Bear (known as Nuiglumar Z in Japanese) well, you've got to have at least a little bit of an idea of what's coming, right? Nakagawa Shoko stars with Takeda Rina in this one, based on a book by Ohtsuki Kenji of the rock band Tokusatsu and the brand new theatrical trailer is... |

Indie Beat: Top 5 Most Intriguing Indies In December Posted: 25 Nov 2013 10:00 AM PST As the calendar sheds the final days of 2013, the holiday blockbusters wind up as do the prestige movies, which makes it pretty darn quiet out there in the worlds of the independents and foreign language releases. Still, there are a few interesting flicks to make note of this fine n' frosty December. A further note... Indie Beat as a column will be taking a bit of a winter nap for the remainder of the year, but do not fret as the first days of 2014 will be bringing my 2013 favorites list, and both Slamdance and Sundance, so there is much to set our sights on for the new year... for now... the top 5 most intriguing indies in December.... |

DOC NYC 2013: Award Winners and More Reviews Posted: 25 Nov 2013 06:30 AM PST DOC NYC wrapped this past Thursday, and the jury awards have been announced. In the Viewfinders Competition, "chosen for their distinct directorial visions," according to the festival, the Grand Jury Prize winner was Mahdi Fleifel's A World Not Ours, a wry, humorous look at the Palestinian refugee camp in Lebanon where the director grew up. From the jurors' statement: "Director Mahdi Fleifel has drawn on his family's home movies, archival footage, and his own extensive video diaries to invite us into a world completely unfamiliar to most viewers, and one from which most residents cannot leave. Unlike his friends and family who have spent decades living in the camp, Fleifel is free to come and go - but his portrayal of the world of the... |
