X-MEN: APOCALYPSE Ending The World In 2016

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:30 PM PST

Bryan Singer, the reappointed mastermind behind the big screen X-Men franchise, took to Twitter this evening to announce X-Men: Apocalypse for 2016, which will, of course, feature Apocalypse, the millennial old mutant who is the X-Men's most powerful foe.    Shortly after Fox confirmed further with a planned release date of May 27, 2016. Singer and co. are currently in post on X-Men: Days Of Future Past for a release next summer. DoFP seems to be the franchise's attempt at a "Go Big Or Go Home" kind of X-Men saga. The kind we comic fans have been hoping for on the big screen since, well... film one really. 'Cause if anything the X-verse is a big place with some of the most operatic and out...

Review: OUT OF THE FURNACE And Into The Fire

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 03:00 PM PST

"When you got nothing, you got nothing to lose..."   A reference to that famous line from "Like a Rolling Stone" by Bob Dylan might seemingly be more at home in a review of Inside Llewyn Davis, the early 1960s folk music odyssey from the Coen brothers. But it holds truer of Christian Bale's character in Out of the Furnace, the new ultra-dour revenge film from Crazy Heart director Scott Cooper. Bale plays Russell Baze, a shopworn, salt-of-the-earth man of few words. These days, Russell is coming by his grizzled demeanor honestly, working long days as an unassuming handyman, scraping lead paint from door jams and dealing with old gutters while up on ladders. An honest day's work is the limit of his aspirations. He's...

Review: DIAMOND ON VINYL Strikes A Provocative Groove

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 11:00 AM PST

Francis Ford Coppola's The Conversation and Brian de Palma's Blow Out are two films in the American cinematic canon that present to their audiences worlds of conspiracy and voyeurism through the provocative role of the audiophile. No less important or enticing, these films are, however, now decades old, taking place well before the digital revolution and our new state of DIY. So what happens when digital brings a new found intimacy to the voyeuristic landscape? J.R. Hughto's second feature Diamond on Vinyl proves to be a most suitable, and thought-provoking playback of these themes, a SoCal-set Noir that effortlessly weaves genre into a naturalistic story of a man who is just trying to gain some semblance of a normal life. The premise goes down like this:...

Review: CRAVE Fails To Satisfy

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 10:00 AM PST

Crave is the feature debut of Charles de Lauzirika, a man best (un)known for directing/producing DVD special features. So what, you say? Sew buttons on a dead hobo's suit! You know you love yourself some special features, and de Lauzirika is responsible for some quality content on many a quality disc. Hell, his Alien 3 featurettes might be better than the film itself. But does this qualify him to tell a more complex story? The story being that of a crime scene shutterbug named Aiden who becomes increasingly more detached from reality? A tragi-comic character study full of pitch black humor? An unlikely romance with moments of extreme discomfort? A story full of emotion and nuance and gray morality? Because that's the delicate balancing act...

Mark Your 2014 Calendars For Lars Von Trier's NYMPHOMANIAC

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 09:30 AM PST

Magnolia Pictures has announced the official U.S. release dates for Lars Von Trier's two-part erotic epic Nymphomaniac, which the press release assures us contains "graphic depections of sexuality to a degree unprecedented in a mainstream feature film." So uh, welcome to the mainstream, Lars? The film will be released as two full length features. Part one will open in theaters on March 21, 2014 and will go on demand early on March 6 for late-night, private viewing. Part two will open April 18, 2014 and will be On Demand April 3. This is all great to hear (and yes, Part 2 does open on Good Friday), but I can't help be envious of the citizens of Denmark, who will be able to see both parts...

Review: INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS, Folk Music And Colorful Characters, Melancholy And Gut Punches

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Winners of numerous screenwriting awards, including two Oscars, it's difficult to think of many filmmakers more adept at their craft than Joel and Ethan Coen. So it comes as a bit of a surprise when, in the first act of the brothers' latest film, Inside Llewyn Davis, Oscar Isaac's titular Llewyn pulls out a trick straight from Screenwriting 101 and literally saves the cat. As Blake Snyder will tell you, this technique is used to build quick sympathy for the protagonist -- in this case, making us like Oscar. It works -- and that is thankfully just about the only by-the-book beat in this nontraditional but wholly enjoyable film. Set in New York City's Greenwich Village during the 1960s, Inside Llewyn Davis is a folk...

Watch THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 Trailer!

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 09:00 AM PST

Here we go. The new trailer for The Amazing Spider-Man 2. You get to see a lot of Jamie Foxx in action as Electro. You will catch the occasional glimpse of Green Goblin. And you will only get to see The Rhino suit. No Paul Giamatti I am afraid. Which is surprising, considering how much is in this trailer already. Why not show his character, Sytsevich? You've got Vulture's wings and Doc Oc's tentacles in it (part of a post credit teaser as I understand it)! But no Paul? Shame. But you always get points for Emma Stone. Take a look for yourself. It looks like the Summer movie season will be off to an 'electric' start (ducks for cover). ...

Review: THE LAST DAYS ON MARS, As Lifeless As The Planet Itself

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 08:00 AM PST

After the screening of The Last Days on Mars in the director's fortnight competition, many were wondering why exactly the clunky, derivative Mars-zombie movie was programmed at a high-class festival like Cannes. Fair enough, but the bigger, even more nagging question in my mind is why the movie was made at all. Clearly, director Ruari Robinson has considerable visual talent. Coming from an effects background, his shorts like BlinkyTM and Fifty Percent Grey gave him enough clout to direct a feature, and it's easy to understand why. Despite being made for probably a tenth of the budget of most sci-fi blockbusters, the Mars landscapes, complete with epic dust storms, and space travel are beautifully rendered. A few shots even carry an ethereal, haunting power that...

Review: LASTING (NIEULOTNE) Deals With Young Love Stained By Tragedy

Posted: 05 Dec 2013 05:00 AM PST

Guilt and indecision narrate a story of two young Polish students trying to come to terms with their own escalating problems in Lasting (Nieulotne), the latest film from Jacek Borcuch (All That I Love). To appreciate how precious life really is they must first stand face to face with sudden tragedy and important decisions that not only gradually lead them further into adulthood but also force them to reinterpret the meaning of love completely anew. The characters' journey starts in a place, which might very easily be called an idyll, undisturbed by any influences from the outside world and enriched by moments of pure sexual excitement a plenty. In Spain, because that's where they've decided to spend their summer vacations, Michal (Jakub Gierszal) and Karina (Magdalena...
