THE DROWNSMAN: Watch The First Trailer For Supernatural Slasher Posted: 06 May 2014 08:00 PM PDT The first trailer for supernatural slasher flick The Drownsman is upon us. You will have to put on some Wellies because it is a moist affair. After almost drowning in a lake, Madison finds herself bound to a life of fear. Unable to describe what happened to her during the moments she was underwater, Madison begins to develop hydrophobia: an abnormal fear of water. Crippled by her past trauma, Madison attempts to shut out the world around her but, her fear intensifies when she begins to be haunted by the vision of an evil figure. After watching her struggle for over a year, Madison's four friends stage an intervention in a desperate attempt to help. In doing so, they accidentally open a floodgate to a dark... |
Jovanka Vuckovic To Direct Clive Barker's JACQUELINE ESS: Lena Headey To Star Posted: 06 May 2014 07:00 PM PDT It's a good day for Jovanka Vuckovic, as well as for strong women in film overall. According to Variety, Vuckovic will adapt Clive Barker's tale Jacqueline Ess: Her Will And Testament, part of his Books of Blood series. Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, known for her fierce roles in 300 and Dredd, will star in addition to co-producing along with Vuckovic. This winter, it became news that Raven Banner Entertainment optioned the story, with Barker's Seraphim Films set to executive produce. Clive Barker is happy about the choice of director: "Jovanka Vuckovic's vision for Jacqueline Ess is at once devastating and beautiful," he states. "Let there be no question: this is the film she was born to make." The news comes not long after... |
Trailer For HOW TO BUILD A TIME MACHINE Offers Obsession And Emotion Posted: 06 May 2014 03:30 PM PDT We are big fans of Beauty Day here at Twitch (full disclosure, I contributed to a commentary track on the DVD) and are happy to see documentary filmmaker Jay Cheel back with a sci-fi inflected documentary, How To Build A Time Machine. A couple of years ago, we reported on this project, which was originally focused on the Jon Titor (a self-proclaimed man from the future) story, but the documentary has evolved a fair ways since then, and has locked in on two subjects: Rob Noisi, a man who has been building a Time Machine replica for many, many years, and PhD Physicist and author Ronald Mallett, who has been researching the nuts and bolts (i.e. mathematics) of time travel for equally as many years.... |
LA Film Festival Announces 2014 Lineup Posted: 06 May 2014 02:30 PM PDT The Los Angeles Film Festival is turning 20 this year, and to celebrate, the fine folks at Film Independent have quite the whopper of a line up. Bong Joon-ho's hotly anticipated science fiction actioner Snowpiercer opens the fest, which runs at Regal LA Live! from June 11 to 19. The closing night film will be Clint Eastwood's screen adaptation of the Broadway hit Jersey Boys. But let's take a look at the meat of the fest with its competition lineups, showcases and retro screenings. While LAFF might not always be known as a place of discovery like Sundance or Toronto, it's one of the few summertime fests in North America that can bring the possibility of such. Take note that American indie mainstays Nathan Silver... |
CrowdFund This! BIG FUTURE Q&A With Mike Bates On Practical Effects Driven Film Posted: 06 May 2014 12:30 PM PDT Are you tired of CGI overkill in your sci-fi adventure cinema? Do you like the classic working-class spaceships, flying cars, and other 'distressed' and aged machines and environments? Do you wish that they still made big adventure movies with partial scale models and miniatures?Director Mike Bates and White Room Artifacts want to realize their own original film in the same spirit: Big Future. They are a team of highly experienced artists and technicians, some of whom comprised the original model shop at ILM in 1975, and collectively have been responsible for practical visual effects for Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Star Trek, Back to the Future, and Pirates of the Caribbean. I sat down and talked with Bates, who is based out of the practical effects... |
Posted: 06 May 2014 09:00 AM PDT Welcome back to The Stack. This time I wax rhapsodic on the long awaited and excellent Blu-ray digibook release of William Friedkin's almost lost Sorcerer. Direct from Israel, Big Bad Wolves, the film Quentin Tarantino called "the best film of 2013" (I think he's wrong) is no doubt an excellent horror thriller and makes it's Blu debut. Olive Films also contributes four titles. Most important is The Pawnbroker, starring Rod Steiger. Long unavailable, this excellent video transfer brings a lost gem back into view. Betty Boop Volume 3 continues their excellent collection of vintage animated shorts starring everyone's favorite flapper. The unintentionally silly 1968 science fiction actioner The Bamboo Saucer combines cold war tension, gunplay and the worst special effects in recent memory. Lastly from Olive, Bang! Bang!... |
COHERENCE: Watch The Theatrical Trailer For James Ward Byrkit's Stellar Indie SciFi Posted: 06 May 2014 07:00 AM PDT There's a certain delicious irony in the fact that James Ward Byrkit's indie scifi Coherence winning multiple best screenplay nods while on the festival circuit. Why ironic? Because as deliciously twisty and cerebral as the film is, and as much as Byrkit certainly had a detailed blueprint in his mind as they went through the process, Coherence is a film literally created with no script. Instead Byrkit gathered a team of skilled improvisational actors and told each only the bare minimum of what they needed to know about their characters and motivations, what each needed to accomplish at key junctures, then wound the whole machine up and let it play out. And the results are remarkable. On the night of an astrological anomaly, eight friends at... |
