First Trailer & Stills From Nick Cheung-Directed HUNGRY GHOST RITUAL Posted: 04 Jun 2014 01:00 AM PDT After a string of successes in front of the camera, including Nightfall, Unbeatable and The White Storm, Hong Kong actor Nick Cheung has become one of the hottest and most sought-after performers in town. He wields so much power in the local industry that the 46-year-old is now venturing behind the camera to write and direct his first feature. The result is Hungry Ghost Ritual, a straight up supernatural horror flick in which Cheung also stars, alongside Carrie Ng, Annie Liu and Cathryn Lee. July marks the Chinese Ghost Festival in the Lunar calendar, when the door to hell is opened and ghosts can wander into the human world in an effort to deter them from haunting people during the rest of the year. To entertain the... |
Sydney 2014 Review: Taut Thriller TOM AT THE FARM Reinvents Director Xavier Dolan Posted: 03 Jun 2014 04:00 PM PDT As of this writing, wunderkind French-Canadian director Xavier Dolan at the age of 25 is premiering his fifth feature film, Mummy, on the Croisette. Making its Australian premiere at the Sydney Film Festival, however, is Dolan's fourth work, Tom at the Farm, which screened in competition at the 70th Venice International Film Festival last year.Tom, who is played by Dolan himself, is a grief-stricken copywriter from the city who must travel to the country in rural Quebec for the funeral of his boyfriend Guillaume. The uncanny attributes of his lover's family farm become immediately clear when Tom is treated both as an outsider and a loved son by grief-stricken and lonely single mother Agathe (Lise Roy). The stark and empty confines of the farm, combined with the dithering... |
Creepy Cannes Thriller IT FOLLOWS Picked Up For US Distribution Posted: 03 Jun 2014 12:30 PM PDT Amongst the dour period pieces and kitchen sink dramas about the injustices of capitalism that seem to litter the Cannes slate, there was this little gem of a horror/thriller from David Robert Mitchell that involved people following other people very, very slowly.I liked It Follows quite a bit, writing:The concept is beautifully simple, but its one of the pleasures of the film to find out just what's going on after the shocking opening sequence. Without being too vague, suffice it to say this is one of the more macabre games of tag in any genre film, with the added benefit of providing one of the more problematic of sexually transmitted concerns.I am thus pleased as punch to see that it's being picked up for distribution... |
Crowdfund This! Political Drama BEFORE THE SPRING Posted: 03 Jun 2014 11:30 AM PDT What's fantastic about exploring the bevy of crowd-sourced film projects out there is just the sheer variety of the work that is being proposed. It is, in many ways, quite invigorating. Of course, quality and content is a concern when considering what projects to support with your hard earn dollars. Good news then that Before The Spring looks to be of the utmost quality, promising a unique look into a world rarely seen in the West.On the brink of the 2011 Arab Spring uprising in Egypt, a young man's life falls apart when he is tortured and extorted by corrupt police officers. When finally given the opportunity to take revenge on his assailants, he must choose whether to perpetuate the violence or break the cycle.What's... |
Watch The First Official Teaser For Tomm Moore's SONG OF THE SEA Posted: 03 Jun 2014 10:45 AM PDT Back in 2009 Irish animator Tomm Moore made quite the first impression with his debut feature The Secret of Kells. An absolutely gorgeous piece of work with no interest at all in aping the current wave of CGI animation that embraced the sort of subtle and nuanced storytelling that has made Miyazaki a beloved name around the globe, Kells would go on to be nominated for an Oscar while marking Moore as a director to watch. And now there's something to see, with the arrival of the first official teaser for Moore's sophomore effort, Song Of The Sea.The story of the last Seal Child's journey home. After their mother's disappearance, Ben and Saoirse are sent to live with Granny in the city. When they resolve... |
Watch The Gorgeous Second Teaser For Indie SciFi Short SUNDAYS Posted: 03 Jun 2014 10:15 AM PDT They say that good things come to those who wait and that very much appears to be the case with Mischa Rozema's scifi short Sundays. We first wrote about the film two full years ago - back in June of 2012 - when they launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the Mexican shoot for the ambitious scifi short. The film posits a future in which computer intelligence outstrips humanity - and the consequences of that development - and the first teaser, which arrived back in December showed that the wait up until that point had been very worthwhile. And now? Now the film is deep into post production with completion anticipated for later this year and a second teaser has arrived to tide us over.... |
