For its upcoming 18th edition, which was revealed yesterday evening, Asia's top fantastic fest didn't disappoint.Opening the doors to the program's 210 films, which span 47 countries, on the 17th of July will be the German film Stereo from director Maximilian Erlenwein, which debuted at the Berlinale earlier this year. Closing the event ten days later will be My Ordinary Love Story, the second film from Korean director Lee Kwon, who previously made Attack on the Pin-up Boys (2007).Puchon Choice, PiFan's competition section, will feature 12 titles this year, including Fruit Chan's The Midnight After and Nacho... |

Review: Joanna Hogg's EXHIBITION Is An Exceptional 'Scenes From A Marriage' Posted: 19 Jun 2014 04:05 PM PDT A three-story modern house is just as much a character in Joanna Hogg's Exhibition as a married artist couple (played by non actors Viv Albertine, of the punk rock band Slits, and artist Liam Gillick) who inhibit it. Equipped with floor to ceiling glass windows, a small lift, a spiral staircase, curtains and dividing screens, the building possesses strong sense of utilitarianism. The childless, middle aged couple have their own work spaces and talk to each other through intercoms whenever they need each other's company. He is a successful architect and she seems to be an artist who is still looking for her voice. At the moment, she is obsessed with recreating Ecstasy of St. Teresa with her own image. For hours on end, she poses... |
Salman Khan Is Looking For A New KICK In This Trailer Posted: 19 Jun 2014 03:30 PM PDT There once was a time when a new Salman Khan movie was a thing to get excited for. Unfortunately, Sallu has been out of the limelight for a little while and his last foray into the world of Bollywood blockbusters, Jai Ho, was roundly beaten by critics, though embraced by fans. This time around, Salman is back in the saddle, taking his more comfortable seat as the king of Eid openings with Kick, a remake of a 2009 Telugu film starring Tollywood's action comedy hero, Ravi Teja. With Salman out of the running for last year's Eid, the holiday was ceded to Rohit Shetty and Shah Rukh Khan's ode to, well, Shah Rukh Khan, Chennai Express. This year, Salman looks to retake the crown he held... |
LA Film Fest 2014 Review: Cross-Cultural Mystery MAN FROM RENO Both Delivers And Disappoints Posted: 19 Jun 2014 02:00 PM PDT Touted as a thriller leading up to its world premiere last Sunday at the LA Film Fest, Dave Boyle's fifth feature is, in many ways both refreshing and frustrating, far less a typical pulse pounding number, and more a good ol' fashioned mystery with its roots firmly planted in a real world-esque procedural.Fujitani Ayako (perhaps best known to Twitch readers as the star of Michel Gondry's segment in the triptych-spun Tokyo, as well as the Heisei Gamera series from the 1990s) stars as Aki, a famous Japanese crime novelist, who escapes to San Francisco in the middle of her latest book tour. There, she meets a handsome and charming stranger played by Kitamura Kazuki. After one night together he disappears from her bed, but not... |
DEAR WHITE PEOPLE: Watch The Teaser For The Sundance Award Winning Comedy Posted: 19 Jun 2014 01:30 PM PDT A big hit when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival Justin Simien's Dear White People hits US screens October 17th and the first teaser for the public release has just arrived online, making it pretty obvious why Sundance audiences flipped for it. It's really damn funny is why.Winner of the 2014 Sundance Film Festival's Special Jury Award for Breakthrough Talent, Dear White People is a sly, provocative satire of race relations in the age of Obama. Writer/director Justin Simien follows a group of African American students as they navigate campus life and racial politics at a predominantly white college in a sharp and funny feature film debut that earned him a spot on Variety's annual "10 Directors to Watch." Dear White People stars rising... |
If Tarantino Made GHOSTBUSTERS 3 Out Of Clay, It Might Look Something Like This ... Posted: 19 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT Yep, T Is For Toilet madman Lee Hardcastle is back and this time he clocks in with a clay rendition of what it might look like if Quentin Tarantino were to direct Ghostbusters 3. And let's be honest: At this point, this version of the film is every bit as likely to be made as any of the versions rumored over the past five years or so. Check it out below.... |
Posted: 19 Jun 2014 12:30 PM PDT Hey, Toronto! It's not all that often that an honest to god icon comes to town but it's happening in July with Ghost In The Shell director Oshii Mamoru on hand as part of the Twitch presented mini-retrospective Techno / Human: The Films Of Mamoru Oshii. And, yes, it would have been a maxi-retrospective if not for the fact that nobody seems to know who holds the rights to many of his titles on these shores these days - I'd written the program notes and everything - but we're getting the big stuff! On the docket will be:In Conversation With Mamoru Oshii - a live, on stage interview taking place Saturday July 12th at 6:30 pm. Oshii will also personally present screenings of Ghost In... |
Crowdfund This: Mexico's Ambulante Going To California Posted: 19 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT Mexican stars Gael García and Diego Luna need your help. For almost a decade now, they have been known in Mexico not only for their acting but also as film producers and distributors. Together with Pablo Cruz, García and Luna founded in 2005 the film company Canana and the traveling documentary film festival Ambulante, which has brought to several Mexican states, during its latest editions, such docs as Searching for Sugar Man, Blackfish, and The Square. Canana itself has produced movies like Miss Bala and this year's Cesar Chavez, as well as been responsible of theatrical and home distribution in Mexico for such films as Only God Forgives and The Master. Now García and Luna are heading to Kickstarter, trying to expand their duties to... |
London Indian Film Festival 2014 Unveils Full Lineup Posted: 19 Jun 2014 11:30 AM PDT One of my favorite film festivals has unveiled their 2014 lineup and it looks like a good one. We've been covering LIFF for the last couple of years and every year they come up with some great features, and this year there are a couple of films that I've had the chance to see already and a few that I'm very eager to check out. Standouts in the list are Sulemani Keeda (Writers), which is a comedy about a pair of screenwriters trying to break into the big time, and Pakistani entry, Anima State by Hammad Khan, an avant garde look at the current state of his country of origin. Those are far from the only interesting titles, though. Also worth noting is the UK Premiere of... |

Fantasia 2014: First Wave Of Titles Announced Posted: 19 Jun 2014 10:30 AM PDT If the first batch of titles from this years Fantasia International Film Festival is any indication, it promises to be a banner year. Opening with the Charlotte Gainsbourg headlined gender-Cinderella-comedy Jacky in the Kingdom of the Women, the festival is also presenting a lifetime achievement award for Mamoru Oshii (accompanied by a remastered presentation of Ghost in The Shell). Scoring another coup, there will be a special screening of James Gunn's much anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy on offer during the festival. But the meat of the announcement is the swath of new films from around the world, including new work from the directors of Inside, Alaxandre Bustillo & Julian Maury, as well as Richard Linklater, Toyoda Toshiaki, The Mo Brothers, John McNaughton, Nakata Hideo, Iguchi Noboru, The Spierig Brothers,... |
Oak Cliff 2014 Preview: BUZZARD, FIGHT CHURCH, LIMO RIDE, Repertory Titles, And More Posted: 19 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT The third annual Oak Cliff Film Festival, a celebration of all things independent, starts tonight, June 19, and runs through June 22. The opening night presentation is To Be Takei, a documentary about actor / activist George Takei, directed by Jennifer M. Kroot and Bill Weber.Held in the North Oak Cliff neighborhood in Dallas, Texas, the festival will take place at the historic Texas Theatre, the Kessler Theater, the Bishop Arts Theater, and other nearby venues. It's a long-established neighborhood that's been revitalized in recent years by a growing arts community, and the festival reflects that combination of the old and the new, with a keen awareness of its important place in the local scene and a desire to connect with the world at large. This... |
Review: COHERENCE May Be A Bit Too Clever For Its Own Good Posted: 19 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT An approaching comet, a cracked cell phone, and a dinner party are the building blocks upon which Coherence is constructed. Very soon, however, Schrödinger's cat, intermittent power outages, and fractured personalities are poured into the mix, followed by a sweet, sweet topping consisting almost entirely of brain-teasing puzzles and head-shaking twists. It is possible to be a bit too clever for your own good. Directed by James Ward Byrkit, who wrote the screenplay based on a story that he and Alex Manugian devised, Coherence brings together four couples in a house, with only occasional forays into the outside world. (It's a great way to maximize what one imagines to be a relatively small budget, yet the film never feels confining, thanks in no small measure... |
Exclusive Clip: 25 TO LIFE, Questioning The Wisdom Of HIV Disclosure Posted: 19 Jun 2014 08:00 AM PDT We're proud to present an exclusive clip from 25 to Life, a documentary that will enjoy its world premiere at the American Black Film Festival in New York City on Sunday, June 22. Directed by Mike L. Brown, a protégé of Spike Lee, the film provides a new perspective on individuals living with the HIV virus. The official synopsis sums it up: The film follows William Brawner, a Philadelphia man who contracted the HIV/AIDS virus from a blood transfusion as a child. Will's young mother, grandmother and aunt kept his HIV status a guarded secret, fearing its stigma, and provided him with a fun-loving childhood to distract him from his illness. As he approached adulthood, he suppressed the reality of his HIV status, stopped taking... |

This year's festival includes some particularly high-profile New York premieres and events.BAMcinemaFest opens with Richard Linklater's grand, epic narrative experiment Boyhood, which charts a young man and his family's life over 12 years, shot during exactly that period of time with the same cast.
