Watch The Brandon Cronenberg Directed Video For Animalia's Stifling

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 01:30 PM PDT

Things may have been quiet on the Brandon Cronenberg front since the release of Antiviral but that doesn't mean he hasn't been hard at work. No, Cronenberg's hard at work developing future feature ideas and while those are percolating he recently reteamed with cinematographer Karim Hussain to direct a music video for local electronic music artist Animalia for her track Stifling from their latest album Mouth Full Of Teeth. And - as you would hope - it's a weird one. Check it out below!...

Now On Blu-ray: BLACK OUT Continues To Sparkle Like A Dirty Diamond

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 01:00 PM PDT

Arne Toonen's Black Out holds up as a darkly comic crime movie. And I'm not saying that just because I'm quoted on the back cover of the new Region A Blu-ray from Doppelganger Releasing. In the blitzkrieg of films I saw at Fantastic Fest in September 2012, Black Out was not the only one that lodged in my memory, but its rambunctious, irreverent spirit helped distinguish it. A recent viewing on Blu-ray confirmed my initial impression: It's very tempting to describe Arne Toonen's Black Out as The Hangover with bullets and blood, but that would be inaccurate, because the Dutch film adds a layer of self-aware mockery and introduces a roster of aggressively colorful characters to an age-old plot. ... While none of the narrative...

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 12:00 PM PDT

We're proud to premiere the first poster for A Picture of You, the first feature film by writer/director J.P. Chan. You can view the poster by artist and filmmaker Yen Tan in its full glory below (click the image to enlarge). The trailer can also be found below; it starts quiet and introspective, and then kicks off into something that looks much wilder, darker ... and funnier. According to the official synopsis: Kyle and Jen, estranged siblings, travel from New York City to rural Pennsylvania to pack up the home of their recently deceased mother. While there, they inadvertently make a shocking discovery that turns their world upside-down. A serious movie about life that collides into a funny movie about death, A Picture of You...

STAR WARS VII Update: Josh Trank To Direct Stand-Alone. Also: What's An Aluminum Falcon?

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 10:50 AM PDT

Not surprisingly, news about all things Star Wars continues to escalate in frequency.First of all, there were yet more photos leaked (allegedly) from the set of Episode VII, including what appeared to be such iconic ships as the X-Wing Fighter and the Millennium Falcon. In a cheeky movie, J.J. Abrams tweeted the following denial/request: If you didn't pick up on the cue, that'd be the "chess board", or game of Dejarik for us nerds, where C-3P0 wisely counseled Artoo to "let the Wookie win". There's a balance here between nice surprises and letting the info slip out, and it'll be interesting to see just how that balance plays out with this enormously anticipated project. At the same time, the official site announced another partner in bringing some...

THE GOLDEN CANE WARRIOR: Very Promising Behind The Scenes Video

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 10:00 AM PDT

This is easily my most anticipated Indonesian film for the rest of the year. Though period action dramas are a staple on Indonesian television -- and just plain bad -- this genre has been pretty much missing from our local big screen. And for that, it has to be done right, because nobody will pay to watch something like what our television industry currently makes.I can see that this film will take it to another level with director Ifa Isfansyah (The Dancer) at the helm and producer Mira Lesmana on board -- she still holds the record of Indonesia's all time box office champion with The Rainbow Troops -- along with top notch crew like production designer Eros Eflin (9 Summers 10 Autumns), cinematographer Gunnar Nimpuno...

Catch Up With ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK Before It Returns

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 09:00 AM PDT

"This ain't Oz," says a counselor in the very first episode of Orange is the New Black, which, in fact, plays as a serio-comic counterpoint to the HBO series that was notorious for its violence and high mortality rate. But Oz was set in a men's maximum-security prison, while Orange takes place in a minimum-security facility for women. Its premise is based on the true-life story of a woman named Piper, who was convicted of a drug-related crime she had committed ten years earlier, and sentenced for 15 months. It's the kind of 'truth is stranger than fiction' story that is ripe for fictionalization and a natural for the episodic nature of television. The first season debuted on Netflix last year, to generally positive acclaim,...

Destroy All Monsters: Don't Leave Me Alone In GAME OF THRONES' World

Posted: 04 Jun 2014 08:15 AM PDT

Spoilers for the latest episode of Game of Thrones. At two points in "The Mountain and the Viper," the 8th episode of this season of HBO's Game of Thrones, characters express a kind of revulsion at the idea of remaining in the world they inhabit. This, based on all we've seen, is understandable. For all its talk of various gods, it's unclear whether any benign force governs the Thrones world at all. If the only true god of Westeros is George R.R. Martin, he is a malign one. "Whoever dies last, be a good lad and burn the rest of us," Dolorous Edd Tollett intones when contemplating the imminent sacking of the Wall by the forces of Mance Rayder. "Once I am done with this...
