Fantasia 2014: More Teaser Art From The Frontières Market

Posted: 25 Jul 2014 04:00 AM PDT

The Frontières International Co-Production Market opened up yesterday with pitch sessions. Twelve projects were presented to a packed house, full of buyers, sellers, producers, and schmucks like me, who do not have a nickle to lend to any project but am willing to lend my services as a purveyor of web content! Somehow that worked and I got in! What is key to any presentation, especially with film, is the visual eye candy that you throw at us during your presentation. Here are some more teaser posters from this year's market. You have Frontières participants Extra Ordinary, an Irish ghost story, Todd E. Freeman's Love Sick, from the makers of Demon's Rook you get Rite of the Witch Goddess, and Simon Rumley's The Godless. Then there are...

Review: HERCULES, A Pretty Good Hot Dog

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 11:07 PM PDT

Brett Ratner may have finally found his niche. Freed of a modern-day setting and any thought of realism, the director's inclination toward outlandish action takes flight almost immediately. The opening moments of Hercules are narrated efficiently; the story takes place a long time ago in a fantasy world far, far away from ancient Greece. Thrace is the place, a mythical land filled with warfare and strife, a land where a mercenary Hercules (Dwayne Johnson) can stride freely with his small band of warriors, including his trusted lieutenant (Rufus Sewell), his prophet and advisor (Ian McShane), his trusty archer and token female (the very fit Norwegian actress Ingrid Bolsø Berdal), his nephew and storyteller (Reece Ritchie), and his mute and loyal friend (the great Aksel Hennie,...

Fantasia 2014 Review: THE RUN Strikes Familiar Chords With Fists And Knees

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT

It is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Then baby, let me tell you Malaysian action flick The Run is flattering a whole lot of folks from other parts of Asia. When Khaliff (Aaron Aziz) returns to his native village for his father's funeral, it doesn't take him long to realize that things have changed. The former soldier, however, is not done being surprised. A family friend informs him that his sister is missing and his father was murdered, quickly establishing that the quiet little village he left years ago for his tour of duty has turned into a hot spot of criminal activity. Writer and director Ahmad Idham borrows heavily from other powerhouse nations and one-time leaders of the Asian action cinema scene....

Review: LE CHEF Serves Up French Comfort Food

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Served up by the smiling Jean Reno and the persnickety Michael Youn, Le Chef (originally, Comme un chef) is French comfort food in the traditional sense. It may not be particularly good for you, nutrition-wise, but it sure is tasty. Jacky Bonnot (Youn) is blessed -- and/or cursed, depending on your point of view -- with a perfect sense of taste, complemented by a perfect sense of smell, and accented by a refusal to accept anything less than perfection in the kitchen. His self-righteous judgment extends into the dining room, where he does not hesitate to inform hapless diners what it is that they should be eating and drinking. As might be imagined, this has led to a succession of jobs where he comes into...

Review: LUCY, Scarlett Johansson Goes Feral, And It's Glorious

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 10:01 AM PDT

Luc Besson's new movie cloaks itself in scientific literacy, but make no mistake: Lucy is a b-movie through and through, a gloriously nutty concoction that would be risible if it ever took itself seriously. Happily, it never does. Featuring an absolutely feral performance by Scarlett Johansson, who is 100% committed to playing a woman so frightened that she is literally shaking in her stiletto heels, and also 100% committed to playing a woman so placid that she barely emits a heart beat, Lucy is based on the false premise that humans use only 10% of their brain capacity, at best. (For more on this, see the internet.) Luc Besson, however, does not need no stinkin' real science to make a kick-ass sci-fi action movie; all...

Trailer For Icelandic Horror Film GRAVES AND BONES

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 08:30 AM PDT

The good thing about the Icelandic film industry is how close knitted it is, which means it's fairly easy to get well known actors or seasoned talent to help you out on a project if the money isn't that great.Such is the case with the new Icelandic horror film Graves And Bones, written and directed by 26 year old first time feature director Anton Sigurðsson, who brought in a large chunk of the Vesturport crew: actors Björn Hlynur Haraldsson, Gísli Örn Garðarsson and Nína Dögg Filippusdóttir, producer Rakel Garðarsdóttir and cinematographer Árni Filippusson, a group that are either siblings or are married to each other. The story for Graves And Bones revolves around a couple, Gísli and Sonja, who have it all but then lose their...

Mexico City's Cine Tonalá To Screen R100, HARD TO BE A GOD, And Other Riviera Maya Selected Films

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Back in February, I said that Riviera Maya's 2014 lineup was bloody amazing, after it was revealed that the festival was premiering in Mexico some of the year's most anticipated films. As of today, few Riviera Maya selected films have been picked up for theatrical distribution in Mexico and only two have been actually released (Nymphomaniac and Why Don't You Play In Hell). The rest remain practically unseen, hence the fact that Mexico City's Cine Tonalá is hosting a little Riviera Maya exhibition is really good - and surprising - news for those who didn't travel to the festival (like myself).  Cine Tonalá's "RMFF Summer" season is formed by a total of ten films, with only one screening per movie. It kicks off on Friday, July...

Fear & Loathing At Comic-Con: The Sequel, Part I: I Hope You Choke On Your Potato Salad And Die

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

CHAPTER I: WHEN YOUR PSYCHIATRIST ASKS IF YOU OWN ANY GUNS, JUST SAY NO. For the next 72 hours, I'm stuck riding a freight train cross country stocked with automatic weapons and plushy toy animals designed to conceal them. I'm surrounded by a group of heavily armed David Icke worshipping crust punks shitting and pissing into Gatorade bottles and frantically putting on their tin foil hats every time they think they spot a chem trail in the skyline. But this story begins with Potato Salad.Life is really just one giant Rube Goldberg machine, some guy launches a joke Kicksarter campaign and I end up in the ER with alcohol poisoning. Some spoiled prat from Hollywood doesn't get laid so he takes out his misguided anger by murdering six...

Fantasia 2014 Review: Iguchi's LIVE, Silly, Sordid, Satisfying

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Out of his many obsessions, it's clear that Iguchi Noboru an ass man. It's pretty obvious from his camera's obsession with ample posteriors, but in conversation with him, he confirmed his appreciation for the curved tuchas. If that wasn't enough to convince, the Go-Pro mounted to a bicycle seat would have been provided another clue. The man likes his bums, and isn't afraid to let us know about it.As one of the weirder auteurs from a country with cinema not afraid to be weird, his proclivities and fetishes are delightfully unabashed. Yet it's the sense of play that sets them apart - even when being downright rude or shocking, there's a charming spin on the behaviour. It's like those videos where you see an infant smoking...

The DEEP DARK Trailer Is Just That. And Mysterious.

Posted: 24 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT

There is no shortage of strange things that can go one in your home. Last year we had Don Thacker's Motivational Growth and The Mould. This year we have Michael Midaglia's Deep Dark and a talking hole. We have a trailer and a new poster to share with you. But this is no ordinary talking hole. This one is voiced by Denise Poirier who did the voice of Æon Flux for the cult MTV series. Deep Dark is about "a failed sculptor finds a strange, talking hole in the wall. The hole has the power to fulfill his wildest dreams, or it just might become his worst nightmare."Denise says of the project, "I've always loved voice work, and working on the DEEP DARK was especially challenging, but also...
