Review: LIFE ITSELF, Thumbs Up For Roger Ebert Doc

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 10:00 AM PDT

If you do what I do -- cherish film and have the chutzpah to tell other people what you think about them -- then you're almost certainly indebted to Roger Ebert. I've documented at length the effect that he had on both my personal and professional life previously, but for any cinephile, in some way you have to confront the work of Ebert. He was much more than the binary position of his thumb, of course. Gregarious, hard headed, an alcoholic, and a champion of innumerable films and filmmakers, he was a person of great contradiction, the sum totaling up to the life of a remarkable man. Steve James' documentary Life Itself does as good a job as anyone could have done in presenting these...

Watch Grandfathers Misbehave In The Trailer For VIEJOS AMIGOS

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Senior citizens in movies tend to come in two flavors: kindly grandfather types who offer words of wisdom, or grumpy, mischievous old coots with a twinkle in their eye who haven't forgotten what it's like to be young. Review: With ME AND YOU Bertolucci Makes A Sweet Return

Posted: 03 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

The reason there hasn't been a new Bernardo Bertolucci film for more than ten years is because the now 72-year-old master filmmaker of The Conformist, Last Tango in Paris and The Last Emperor, has been having health problems. His bad back led to multiple surgeries and ultimately left him wheelchair-bound. Me and You (Io e te), his first film since  The Dreamers, and his first Italian language film in more than 30 years, is a gentle, affecting coming-of-age story masterfully told. The film is unexpectedly sweet. Sure, there are a bit of Bertolucci's usual sexual innuendos and brashness but skin is kept to a bare minimum. Don't despair yet, because there is a lot to love in Me and You. I can see why the project,...
