Review: GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY

It starts with the soothing sounds of 10cc's "I'm Not In Love". Waves of reverb crash over the Rhodes electric piano riff, a building crescendo vocal harmonies that lead to the plaintive lead vocal line. Thus begins our look at "Awesome Mix 1", the cassette tape that serves as personal soundtrack for a young Peter Quill. The opening sequence of the film is a flashback, and it's one that pulls few emotional punches. Sure, it's heavy handed (literally), but it demonstrates that James Gunn and his writers are trying something a bit different over here in this corner of the Marvel universe, adding in a bit more pathos to the proceedings.Equally, there's a lot more overt silliness, and part of the charm of these characters is...

Fantasia 2014 Interview: Talking THE MIDNIGHT SWIM And Emotional POV With Sarah Adina Smith

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 06:00 PM PDT

After directing a number of short films, The Midnight Swim is the first feature of young director Sarah Adina Smith. I detected a note of exhaustion and overwhelmed frazzle still lingering from the generous reception of the film the previous night. Sarah was generous enough to extend me some indulgence for an long cup of coffee on the eve of her exit from Montreal with her family (including her significant other and cinematographer pictured above.) With pale, diffuse light cascading in through the tall window of an empty hotel dining hall and eerie, almost absolute, silence outside of the tinkling our our stirring spoons, we casually chatted about her delicate and emotive film, and subjects both mundane and profound. Empathy, the art of listening, the nature...

Fantasia 2014 Review: CYBERNATURAL

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 05:00 PM PDT

Man, I hate Facebook.Sure, it's what the cool kids have been using these days, at least until Snapchat started taking over as the dominant way of communicating without your mom seeing. While for us old people it's a great way of stalking your ex or getting baby pics shoved down your feed, I dread to think what my high school experience would have been like with this kind of reciprocal social media. Sure, I'm a Twitter fiend (@filmfest_ca... *cough*), but in many ways that's a broadcast medium, pyrimidal in construction. I can tweet out, and not necessarily read what's coming in.I like it that way. Facebook by its very nature is is a two way street, it forces relationships upon its users. You do something...

Review: SHARKNADO 2: THE SECOND ONE, A Silly Story In Which Every Moment Is Outlandish

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Anthony C. Ferrante returns to direct and Thunder Levin returns to write another outrageous chapter of cult phenomenon Sharknado, with Sharknado 2: The Second One. Fans of the first one will be pleased to know they do not diverge much from the formula of the first one.  The film opens with Fin Shepard (Ian Ziering) and April Wexler (Tara Reid) flying back to New York for a bit of them time, family time and an appearance on Live with Kelly and Michael. April wrote a book about their encounter with the Sharknado in Los Angeles - How to Survive a Sharknado. I do not know how you fill an entire book with helpful hints to avoid a watery shark filled apocalypse. You can only write...

Fantasia 2014 Review: Indonesian Action Flick GUARDIAN Frustrates

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 12:15 PM PDT

Marysa is getting pretty sick and tired of her mom, Sarah, haranguing her about her martial arts studies. She just wants to be a normal teenage girl and hang out with her best friend. But Sarah is insistent on these lessons, fearing what is to come. Sarah knows something but will not tell Marysa which only strains their relationship. Then that day comes and in an explosion of bullets Sarah and Marysa are off and running away from bad guys toting machine guns and rocket launchers. Not too far behind is Paquita and her crew. Everyone wants Marysa but she does not know why. Kardit's film certainly is entertaining. I laughed as much with it as I did at it. Guardian has no shortage of passion and...

CHAPTER 6: SELL IT TO ME, BABY!Uzi is adamant that we get dinner immediately after finishing our session with the Landmark Forum. "What are you in the mood for, Greg? I could go for some Mexican. Scratch that, I NEED some Mexican. How do you feel about tacos, Greg?""I like tacos, who doesn't?""Good. You can't talk shop on empty stomach. Follow me."Uzi tells me that he comes to San Diego often for business and that the Gas Lamp district is just a tourist wasteland of shitty chain restaurants and crappy fusion restaurants that cater to the hip artisan lunch truck crowds who worship at the altar of everything Austin. If we want good food, we need to travel. Uzi has to explain it to that we are...

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 09:00 AM PDT

And for another year, the arts org known as the Wassaic Project is putting on its own film festival. This mini-fest runs August 1-3 as part of the broader Wassaic Project Summer Festival. A short train ride from the bustle of NYC, the Wassaic Fest gives city-dwellers a chance to escape and see some (free) flicks from some of the emerging voices in indie cinema. Review: WAR STORY, A Devastating Study Of Conflict, From Within

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Mark Jackson did not so much as burst forth onto the independent film scene in 2011 with his brilliant first feature Without. Rather he made a careful set of imprints and impressions, distinct and measured, over the entire year on the international festival circuit. I caught wind of this debut not too long after its premiere at Slamdance, intrigued by the images of Joslyn, a young woman distraught and nearly alone in a big house in the big woods -- nearly alone, for her only companion was a disabled old man she had to care for like an infant. A brilliant anti-cathartic piece of cinema on remorse and loss, Without became my favorite film of that year, and one that ranks for me amongst the...

Posted: 29 Jul 2014 05:00 AM PDT

Team Twitch is very sad that PiFan is over for this year as it was another terrific edition featuring a great lineup. However, not everyone could win come closing night and in the end it was the Austrian western The Dark Valley that took home the top prize. The Norwegian zombie comedy picked up gongs for Best Director and Actor (for Vegar Hoel) as well as the NH Nonghyup Citizen's Award.Other winners in the Puchon Choice competition were the Australian horror The Babadook, which picked up Best Actress for Essie Davis, and Fruit Chan's post-apocalyptic comedy The Midnight After, which was awarded the Jury Prize.Meanwhile two Korean films were honored by the...
