Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: I AM TRASH Lives Up To Its Title In Gloriously Reprehensible Fashion

Posted: 29 Sep 2014 12:30 AM PDT

South Korean indie provocateur Lee Sang-woo returns with the third and final instalment in his thematic "bad family" trilogy, which follows three grown up brothers, reunited when their pedophile father is released from prison. Inspired by a series of real-life news stories and told with an unflinchingly honest eye, I Am Trash is guaranteed to upset and provoke in equal measure.Sang-woo (director Lee), oldest of three brothers, works as a road sweeper in present day Seoul. We first see him being harassed on the street by a couple of youths, but this proves to be the least of the man's problems. Back home, brother Sang-tae (Yang Myung-hun) seems to do little more than masturbate furiously and await the imminent release of their father. Meanwhile, baby brother...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Interview: Alexandre Aja On His Devilish HORNS Adaptation

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 04:01 PM PDT

Fantastic Fest 2014 welcomed the U.S. premiere of Horns, Joe Hill's incendiary tale of damnation and redemption. Not seen since the 2013 edition of the Toronto International Film Festival, Horns now features voiceover work from its star, Daniel Radcliffe (the only differentiator from the Toronto festival cut). With special effects from industry titans KNB and visual effects by Phil Tippett Studio, Horns breathes life -- and smoke -- into this unique coming of age story. Directed by Alexandre Aja (High Tension, Piranha, The Hills Have Eyes) Radcliffe turns in an adeptly angst-filled performance as Ig Perrish, a young man who loses the love of his life (Juno Temple) and is subsequently accused of her murder. He then grows horns and the unwanted ability of people...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Interview: Nicolas Winding Refn And Liv Corfixen On Living MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 02:01 PM PDT

"Violence is like sex -- it's all about the build up." In a scene both hilarious and uneasy, Nicolas Winding Refn states the above (as he references pacing) to Ryan Gosling in the new documentary My Life Directed By Nicolas Winding Refn. Refn's wife, former actress Liv Corfexin, turns the camera on him to document the ups and downs of life during the filming of Only God Forgives. Ups include Alejandro Jodorowsky reading tarot cards for Liv as well as the film's Cannes screening. Downs feature an alternately pissed off and depressed Refn, who believes that his film is not good enough. My Life premiered to a packed audience at Fantastic Fest 2014, full of fans eager for a peek into the director's personal life....

Fantastic Fest 2014 Repertory Screenings: THE ASTROLOGER And DEATH WISH 3 Rock With Old-School Insanity

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 11:00 AM PDT

As I mentioned in our Fantastic Fest preview article, my heart belongs to the repertory screenings, the forgotten flicks that deserve a fresh look, presented by extremely knowledgeable and passionate curators. That was certainly the case this year. I only got to see two repertory screenings, but each was more than worth its weight in gold, and reminded me that people often work for months, years, and sometimes decades to bring their creative visions to the big screen. Click through the gallery below to read more, and check out all the images and posters....

New York 2014 Review: THE BLUE ROOM Shows Off Mathieu Amalric's Directing Chops

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 10:00 AM PDT

Mathieu Amalric's The Blue Room is a hard film to like-- its tone is cold and distant. But it is precisely designed that way to accompany in showing the mind of its passive protagonist. Based on the book of the same name by popular French novelist Georges Simenon, the film tells a brief obsession that causes double murder and ensuing courtroom drama. It harkens back to the olden days of film noir with hidden motives, loose morals and an unlikely femme fatale. The film is a Hitchcockian intrigue coupled with Chabrol's breeziness. Even the film's score (beautifully composed by Grégoire Hetzel) reminds you of Bernard Herrmann. It starts with Julien and Esther in the throes of sweaty, passionate lovemaking in a French door shuttered, stifling hotel...

Our Facebook Quiz Will Shortly Have Its 350th Film Guessed!

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Way back when Twitch had its own separate forum, the most-trafficked topic used to be the screenshot quiz. The rules were simple: someone would post a screenshot, for all other people to guess which film it was from. And the person who guessed the movie, won the right to post the NEXT screenshot, building a chain. And this went on for seven years, until well over a thousand films had been guessed. Then times changed: the forum went dead as people mostly moved film discussions over from old-style forums to social media. Two years ago we decided to relaunch a new forum, sort-of, on our Facebook page. And what was the first topic we put on it? The screenshot quiz, of course! We decided to...

Fantastic Fest 2014 Review: GOODNIGHT MOMMY Will Keep You Up At Night

Posted: 28 Sep 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Serving as the single secret screening at this year's Fantastic Fest, Austrian arthouse horror Goodnight Mommy gets under your skin early and stays there long after the credits. Within its sparse and sterile decor, this minutely observed chamber piece tears apart the constructs of the family drama. Following an accident, a heavily bandaged mother lives with her twin sons in a modern, isolated house in the countryside. The trauma of the event lingers on, creating a tense atmosphere in the home but the twins suspect that the woman living with them may not be their mother. High strung, she treats the boys badly, yelling at them and locking them in their room for the slightest infractions. When her behaviour becomes too much to bear, the...
