Busan 2014 Review: ENTANGLED Gets Caught Up In Its Own Depressing Narrative

Posted: 03 Oct 2014 02:00 AM PDT

Following the blistering debut Fatal, a gritty rape-revenge thriller that bowed at the Busan Film Festival in 2012, Lee Don-ku returns to Busan with the disappointing family drama Entangled. Though it seeks to inspire a similar sense of shock and outrage with its raw family dynamics and desperate plot turns, Lee's matter-of-fact mise-en-scene and his narrative's inherent histrionics combine to form a humdrum and overly familiar Korean indie. A mother lives under a roof with her two daughters and her eldest daughter's husband. When the wife gives birth to a baby the mood in the household is ebullient but things quickly take a dark turn when an accident costs the newborn its life. Tensions escalate and tempers flare as each family member copes with the...

Busan 2014 Review: GIFTED Takes An Interesting Turn Before Veering Off Course

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 11:01 PM PDT

Taking its cue from the common social grievances often found in Korean indie dramas, Gifted, the sophomore effort of Poongsan (2011) helmer Jung Jai-hung, examines the friction between unemployment and consumerist ambitions in modern Korea. Slight and familiar, the film doesn't immediately stand out but when its narrative starts to deviate off the standard template, it isn't long before it goes in a surprising direction. Min-soo has been unemployed for months. Laid off from his company after eight years of service with no promotion, his job history is haunting his current work applications, as recruiters are quick to dismiss him. His girlfriend Su-jin is offered the opportunity to buy out her employer's cafe, but she isn't aware of Min-soo's job status and when she signs...

Review: LEFT BEHIND, Polite, First-Class Apocalyptic Disaster

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 10:01 PM PDT

So long, suckers! What's most remarkable about Left Behind isn't that Nicolas Cage is starring in a religious-themed movie about the end of the world, nor is it that longtime stunt coordinator extraordinaire Vic Armstrong is finally directing his sophomore feature, more than 20 years after his debut effort. No, it's that everyone in the movie is so darn nice. This kind, patient attitude is perfectly expressed by Cage as airline pilot Captain Rayford Steel. When discussing his longtime marriage mate, Irene (Lea Thompson), whose recent turn toward religion has alienated him, Ray says, politely, "Well, if she's going to run off with another man, why not Jesus?" Ray is talking with his daughter Chloe Steele (Cassi Thomson), another religious skeptic, who has come home...

CURE FOR PAIN Director Adds Sean Astin And Lynn Whitfield To Indie Spy Comedy FOR ALL EYES ALWAYS

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 02:30 PM PDT

It was back in 2011 that we first came across the work of director Rob Bralver. The occasion at the time was his Cure For Pain: The Mark Sandman Story, an intimate look at the life of the former Morphine frontman that I like rather a lot and ended up programming as part of the Canadian Music Week film program in that year where it played to a very appreciative audience. Bralver has a pair of equally well received docs under his belt since then and is now launching production on his debut narrative feature, For All Eyes Always.Indie spy satire 'For All Eyes Always' has added Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings, The Strain) and Lynn Whitfield (HBO's The Josephine Baker Story) to an...

Hooray For Hollywood! Free Labor Is Super-Awesome

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 12:30 PM PDT

So the Twitter-verse erupted the other day with the news that Lena Dunham -- she of the healthy self-image and three-million dollar book advance -- had dared to offer a bunch of volunteer artisans the opportunity to "open" for her during the upcoming 12-city book tour of her new memoir, Not That Kind Of Girl. Without pay. Quelle horreur! No sooner had Gawker issued its all-things-Lena-standard "Off with her head!" than Twitter re-exploded with the news that Lena would, in fact, offer some form of financial compensation for the stand-up comedians and Mummenschanz impersonators she had booked. Tweeting herself, Dunham offered, "As an artist raised by artists, no one believes more than I do that creators should be fairly compensated for their work." Well, except...

Cold and Hot: An Interview with Mathieu Amalric - Star, Director, Co-writer of THE BLUE ROOM

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Mathieu Amalric, a superstar of French cinema, is in town for the New York Film Festival, promoting his new film The Blue Room, which he co-wrote, directed and stars in. It's also co-written by his wife, playwright Stephanie Cléau, who also co-stars. As an admirer, I was relieved by the fact that Amalric was exactly how I imagined him to be: a piercingly bright, yet chaotic little Frenchman who reeks of cigarette smoke, just like many roles that he has played over the years. Listening to his all-over-the-map responses with wildly gesticulating hands, I couldn't help but smile. I could've easily listen to him speak all day if I was given time. This is an account of 25 minutes with Amalric.Twitch: You are known as an...

Busan 2014 Review: PARADISE IN SERVICE, A Classical Tearjerker

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 11:03 AM PDT

Paradise in Service is presented by Taiwanese film-maker Hou Hsiao-Hsien but it is certainly not directed by him. This classical melodrama is a much more accessible film, and although conventional, communist-war period in Taiwan is brought to vivid life thanks to the equally colourful characters and light melancholic tone.Director Doze Chen-Zer Niu presents a rather different slice of Taiwan's history. In 1969, Kinmen, the nationalist party, is still in conflict with the mainland of China. With heavy hearts, most troops feel they will never see their homes again, literally fighting coast to coast. New recruit Pao is one such young and scared man who has a girl back home. He made a promise to her that he intends to keep. He is transferred to an...

EL GIGANTE: Watch The Trailer For Gigi Saul Guerrero's Short

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 10:30 AM PDT

It was back in March when the Kickstarter campaign for Gigi Saul Guerrero's short film El Gigante was launched. It looked really great and, ultimately, the campaign was a complete success. Back then, I described the short as this: There's a cannibal family on the Mexico-United States border hunting illegal Mexican immigrants, who eventually will face the ruthless villain that the badass luchador el Gigante really is. The plot also involves the family's business, a taco truck that sells human flesh. El Gigante is based on the first chapter of Shane McKenzie's acclaimed novel Muerte con Carne and combines the theme of illegal immigration from Mexico to the United States with lots of gore and luchador action. Guerrero made the 13-minute short film with...

Crime Flick CITY STATE 2: BRAVE MEN'S BLOOD Gets A New Trailer

Posted: 02 Oct 2014 09:30 AM PDT

I can count on one hand the number of sequels Icelandic movies have gotten. In the 80s, a comedy series got two, and in the late 90s, an 80s comedy got one, and I think that's it. In the last few years Icelandic films have struggled to find an audience, so a sequel to a recent film would be unthinkable to most. But the low budget sleeper hit City State wove a story so dense that they needed a second one to continue with it.On the 17th of October City State 2: Brave Men's Blood will have its premier and the people behind it have let loose an action packed trailer to entice us.In order to take down a major criminal organization, the ambitious head of...

There are a lot of nifty looking crowdfunding projects that pass through the halls here at Twitch. Plenty of those are worth your time, so why should Paul D. Hart's short film Three Fingers be of particular interest to you?First up, its focus on veteran's affairs, women in the military, and post traumatic stress is timely and fascinating stuff.
