Check Out America's Scariest Haunts, Thanks To THE HOUSES OCTOBER BUILT

Posted: 07 Oct 2014 03:00 AM PDT

If you are looking for some of America's scariest haunts this Halloween season, then the folks behind the upcoming horror flick The Houses October Built have created a map of some of the best in the country. They also included all the haunts featured in their film, where the thrill seekers went looking for a notorious group of haunters who offer the most extreme scares. They are noted by the little blue skulls. Just like Hollywood has maps to the stars, this is your map to the scares! I for one cannot help but notice that a lot of those featured in the movie are located in East Texas. I am reaching for a connection here so bear with me. Most of Joe R Lansdale's novels take...

New York 2014: ONCE UPON A TIME IN AMERICA And The Importance of Preservation

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 08:00 PM PDT

Post-production wiz, Walter Murch, in his book, In The Blink of An Eye, devotes a chapter to what he refers to as a film's DNA. He essentially says that a film can only be what it was meant to be, much like a human or chimpanzee are the products of their organic DNA. The human and chimp DNA may be genealogically similar, but they are nevertheless organically assembled to create the creature nature meant for them to be. You can try to splice their DNA to create a sort of cross-specie Humanzee, as Russian scientist Ilya Ivanov attempted to do in the 1920s, but ultimately, a chimp is a chimp and a man is but a man. To Murch, the same can be said for...

Doyle, Asano And Khavn Collide In The RUINED HEART Trailer

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 04:00 PM PDT

What happens when you take one of the most punk rock filmmakers on the planet in Khavn de la Cruz - a Filipino lofi maestro who elevates 'shambolic' to an art form - and put him together with acclaimed cinematographer Christopher Doyle and Japanese acting icon Asano Tadanobu? Ruined Heart happens is what.A merciless hit man rescues a prostitute from a violent incident in a Philippine slum before the two take flight. Though Khavn, a standard-bearer of the digital age in the Philippines, has already established himself as a director of countless films, he is also an accomplished poet and musician. The bewildering visuals and punk-opera soundtrack expertly convey a world that extends far beyond the dialogue. As the story unfolds, a poetic sentiment wafts...

Crowdfund This: Tony Ukpo's SciFi Horror THE HADES PIT

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 02:30 PM PDT

We've been covering Tony Ukpo's work here on Twitch for years now, the UK based indie director having turned out a string of impressive micro budget features over the years. And while his plans for upcoming scifi horror picture The Hades Pit are certainly modestly budgeted by studio standards they do run well beyond what can be done with friends and favors and so Ukpo is turning to crowd funding to try and put the film together. Here's the pitch:The story starts with a young woman and her dog on their way to the countryside with her father, on a regular annual father/daughter retreat where he works as a Park Ranger. On this trip however, something is not right, signaled by the smoke coming from...

It's Official: TWIN PEAKS Returns In 2016

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 12:00 PM PDT

It's happening again ...It was just days ago that speculation over a return of cult classic television series Twin Peaks ran rampant after co-creators David Lynch and Mark Frost simultaneously tweeted a (not so) cryptic message quoting a line from the original series. And now it's official.Twin Peaks is returning with a new, nine episode run on Showtime in 2016 with all episodes penned by Lynch and Frost with Lynch to direct all nine himself throughout 2015. The timing here is significant for fans as the return occurs in real time as Special Agent Dale Cooper's (Kyle MacLachlan) promised / prophesied emergence from the Black Lodge draws near. Which means, among other things, that this is a direct continuation of the original story as opposed...

Busan 2014 Review: SOCIALPHOBIA Effectively Blends Social Agenda And Genre Tropes

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 09:00 AM PDT

The Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA) returns to Busan with Socialphobia, a new work that is equal parts social drama and murder mystery. Examining the disruptive effect of communication in the digital era within a society where the slightest bit of gossip can take on a life of its own, this debut film showcases Hong Seok-jae's assiduous combination of genre tropes and subtext. When a young man serving in the military takes his life, an anonymous internet user makes light of his death. A group of youths decide to confront her, first meeting in an internet cafe and then making their way to her home, meanwhile recording the whole process live for all to see. With the door wide open, the group ventures into...

Slick, Youthful Action In Dutch Thriller BOY 7

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 08:30 AM PDT

Taking a premise familiar from the likes of Memento, Paycheck, Dark City and others - a protagonist who must piece together who they are from fragmentary clues while on the run from others who know far, far more than they do - Lourens Blok's adaptation of Mirjam Mous' novel Boy 7 appears to put a very slick and action packed spin on the proceedings. When Sam regains consciousness in the middle of a crowded subway, he doesn't know how he got there, where he came from nor his own name. He frantically searches for his identity, using the contents of his backpack. Slowly but surely he realizes his life is in great danger.Though there are no subtitles on the freshly released trailer there's still plenty to...

Busan 2014 Review: PARTNERS IN CRIME, A Subversive, Stylish Murder Mystery

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 08:00 AM PDT

Partners In Crime is the latest film from Taiwanese director Jung-chi Chang (Touch of the Light), and, like his previous features, he again taps into a superbly realized gen Y narrative. The film is directed with complete confidence. Right from the outset, the fast-paced and exciting opening credits, saturated pop conceptualism, and surrealism set the stage and tone of things to come.Three juvenile boys from the same high school happen upon the body of a schoolgirl one gloomy afternoon. After reporting it to the police they are compelled to investigate further after they are told nothing of the girl's demise and are instead given a heartless school counselor, who cryptically suggests they forget about the incident.Although schoolmates, the boys do not initially know each other,...

NYC Happenings: "Stephen Chow: The King of Comedy," An Appreciation of the Popular and Versatile Hong Kong Actor-Director

Posted: 06 Oct 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Hong Kong actor and writer-director Stephen Chow has been an immensely popular figure in Asia since first appearing on TV and in films in the late 1980s. He is best known in the West, however, for his two breakout international hits of the 2000s: Shaolin Soccer (2001) and Kung Fu Hustle (2004). These two films, in which Chow exercised a great deal of creative control as lead actor, producer, and writer-director, introduced audiences outside of Asia to his considerable comedic and visual talents. Despite his great success with these films, though, Chow remains under-appreciated in the West beyond Hong Kong cinema aficionado circles. Even though his most recent film, last year's big-budget CGI spectacle Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons, was his biggest hit yet...
