Review: DRACULA UNTOLD Reimagines A Reluctant Vampire Action Hero

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 10:01 PM PDT

Surprisingly effective, the latest iteration of the Dracula legacy seeks to rebuild vampire-movie mythology by going back to the beginning. First published in 1897, Bram Stoker's novel inspired F.W. Murnau's unofficial adaptation Nosferatu in 1922, which then sparked a series of stage plays, one of which served as the more direct source for Tod Browning's Dracula in 1931. That movie entranced moviegoers with a startling vision of an elegant, bloodsucking vampire, following in the footsteps of earlier horror productions from Universal Studios. Though it plays somewhat flat and dry today, it established characters -- and character traits -- that Universal copied in subsequent editions, establishing a fair portion of the monster movie mythology that it is now seeking to reboot. Serving as a prologue --...

Camera Japan 2014 Review: FORMA Demands Attention

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 03:00 PM PDT

(This review won't scratch the surface, and that is fully intentional...) At the start of Forma, you see one of its protagonists stick a pen in a cardboard box, making a small hole. She then puts the box on her head, and walks around her office, navigating just by her assumptions and the tiny bit she can see through the hole. And during Forma's 145 minute length, first-time director Sakamoto Ayumi demands her audience to do basically the same thing, and deliberately hides some obstacles, to confound you and make you stumble... At first glance the story presented seems to be a simple one. During a chance encounter, Ayako meets Yukari, who she knows from high school. Yukari seems unhappy, stuck in life, and Ayako...

Brad Bird Takes Us To TOMORROWLAND In First Teaser

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 02:30 PM PDT

Long in development at Disney is Brad Bird's second live-action effort as director, Tomorrowland. Bird and screenwriter Damon Lindleof take the theme land inside Disney parks that focuses on science, technology and the future, and turn it into an adventure tale which looks to be inspired by the likes of Harry Potter, The Wizard of Oz, Ray Bradbury short stories, World's Fair expos, and of course, Walk Disney himself. The first teaser for the film dropped today, and what's so promising about it, is that it isn't bombastic in anyway whatsoever. We are eased into the wonder of such a place with a childlike delight and emphasis on teasing character. We get a little George Clooney narration (he's the reluctant scientist in this whole adventure), and...

New York 2014 Review: THE 50 YEAR ARGUMENT Tells A Fiery Tale Of Words

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 02:00 PM PDT

Where to start reviewing a film like The 50 Year Argument? It's a question of approach that surely plagued Martin Scorsese when founding editor Robert B. Silvers first pitched him to tackle the subject of The New York Review of Books, as the magazine approached its 50-year anniversary.Even contributing writer Margaret Bodde, at the film's NYFF premiere, professed her initial doubts while recounting a New York Review celebration where Scorsese and co-director David Tedeschi - editor of my one of my personal favorite documentaries, No Direction Home, - were lurking in a back room of the gathering, nabbing staff writers one by one for uncharacteristically brief 15 minute interviews. When the writers weren't busy being interviewed by Scorsese, they were quipping to one another about...

Feratum 2014 Dispatch, Days 3 And 4: ABCs OF DEATH 2 And A Porn Movie To Close The Fest

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 01:00 PM PDT

I remained focused on the Mexican selection during the last couple of days of Feratum 2014, to the point that I ended watching each and every national, feature-length film that the festival presented. Unfortunately, the trend of the first two days continued and the quality of the work was, to put it mildly, disappointing. The third day of the festival started with Están Aquí, the Mexican effort that eventually won the best screenplay award. That was such a bizarre, inexplicable decision because if the movie lacks something is precisely a damn competent script. Están Aquí is typical no-budget cinema, a film made entirely in one location in which everything relies on the cast and, indeed, a creative script.  It tries to tell the story of an...

Check This Amazing Artwork Of Jeffrey Combs As Edgar Allan Poe In NEVERMORE

I have nothing to add to the press release beyond, "Wow."Phantom City Creative Artwork Revealed for Edgar Allan Poe Halloween "Nevermore" Performance at the Somerville TheatreBOSTON (October 1, 2014) -- On October 31, fans of the darker literary persuasion will find a very special treat at the Somerville Theatre. At 8pm, the house lights will go down, and Edgar Allan Poe will return. In "Nevermore: An Evening With Edgar Allan Poe," Jeffrey Combs, known as Herbert West in Re-Animator, several Star Trek TV characters, and the eccentric FBI agent in The Frighteners, will fill Poe's shoes, coat, and personage. Combs' portrayal of the Boston-born author is so mesmerizing that attendees will forget that Poe has left us, and that it is, in fact, not 1848.For...

Opening: AUTOMATA, Intense And Gripping Science Fiction

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 12:01 PM PDT

Spanish filmmaker Gabe Ibáñez's long-awaited second feature Autómata is an intense and gripping dystopian story, bordering on European surrealism within a classical narrative. Certainly, many current films present a weary and negative view of humanity's future, be it death by plague, war or environmental disaster. In Autómata, humanity might be ending with a whimper, but the planet, and the sentient beings it might leave behind, suggest a cyclical mythology in which people might be just a blip, but not without substance. Set in the mid-21st century in an unknown city, when desertification has decimated the global population and robots do most of the dirty work, Antonio Baderas plays Jacq, an insurance agent who checks on people's claims of defective robots. The robots are supposed to...

Don't Answer The Door For Mike Chester's TRICK OR TREATERS

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 11:30 AM PDT

A major pet peeve of mine is the casting of actors in their late twenties or early thirties to play teenagers. Yes, it's been going on forever and I understand the mechanics of why it happens but it remains a point of irritation nonetheless. No such problem, however, with Mike Chester's The Trick Or Treaters.A Halloween themed found footage horror film directed by Chester while still in high school himself the trailer for this one makes great use of that authenticity along with the fact that Chester seems to know his way around both the edit room and the SFX studio.Every year strange events are captured on camera, some are unexplainable, while others are unbelievable. On the night of October 30, 2012, multiple people were...

Review: WHIPLASH Taps A Confident Beat

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 11:00 AM PDT

It's a pretty quick turnaround to go from Sundance 2013 award-winning short film to Sundance 2014 opening nighter. But for 28-year-old director Damien Chazelle, when opportunity knocks, there's no need to bide your time. It's no surprise that Jason Blum and Jason Reitman believe in this young director enough to produce this sophomore feature; a movie truly brimming with confidence. Chazelle is a serious new talent, and with Whiplash we're just starting to see him flex his muscles. Expertly wielding his sharpest tools, Chazelle has cast Miles Teller as Andrew, a talented young drummer in his first year of study at one of the country's best music conservatories. Teller is one of Hollywood's finest young actors, and his Andrew is meek and lacks confidence -...

Review: THE OVERNIGHTERS, A Shattering Experience

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 10:00 AM PDT

It's a rare and beautiful thing when a film can surprise you. I was taken completely off guard by The Overnighters, a film that I figured would be a stark if a bit earnest take on post-recession America. What I was not prepared for was such a nuanced, sophisticated take that tackles the very core notions of community, responsibility, and compassion, and how they are reflected by varying notions of just what it means to be a Christian. The core of the film is the following of a pastor in the boom town of Williston, North Dakota. Fracking has created an economic bubble and like waves of other booms in the US, men from all over the country have left their communities and support structures...

Watch Jon Yeo's LEVIATHAN AGES And Learn Wisdom From The Tentacled Emperor

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 09:30 AM PDT

It was just over a year ago that we posted a pair of teasers for Jon Yeo's Leviathan Ages, a unique and compelling short that Yeo put together over the span of two years. And now, having completed a lengthy festival run, the full short is available for viewing online. Check it out below.High up amongst craggy hilltops sits the ancient and powerful monument. An imposing temple, from where the Empire has been ruled harshly. Inside, a decrepit inner sanctum. Its dull crumbling walls are defaced with tribal markings. Half turned to dust and dead wired, a still and dormant place. The Emperor sits centrally in the chamber. Proud, defiant, adorned in ceremonial robes. These are his last moments, in a trance like state our illustrious...

Interview: AUTOMATA Director Gabe Ibáñez Talks Banderas, Robots, And The Future

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 09:01 AM PDT

Opening in the US tomorrow, Autómata is a dystopian science-fiction film starring Antonio Banderas, set in a future where the human population is decimated, the world practically a desert, and robots are evolving. I spoke with director Gabe Ibáñez at last month's Fantastic Fest about his view of humanity's future and working with the Spanish star.Do you think the human race is doomed? That wasn't necessarily what I had in mind when I created the landscape of the film. It works for the story, that's the idea in the film, but I don't think we're going in that direction. So much of what you see in the film, though, is already happening. In different places, violence, environmental problems. It might not be as bad as in...

Opening: ST. VINCENT, A Showcase For Bill Murray

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 07:30 AM PDT

Normally there are event films that draw people in, big spectacles that just can't be replicated at home. Then there are the arty films that are still accessible, not something that's too dour or experimental to seem out of place at the multiplex, but still a film with bite, perhaps something melancholic with a darkly humorous streak to it. St. Vincent is a perfect example of this kind of film. It's certainly treading on well-worn ground, but it's a movie told with a mixture of earnestness and dexterity that comes together in a pretty satisfying way. At its core this is a showcase for Bill Murray, here channeling his curmudgeon shtick that he displayed in the likes of Rushmore to its inevitable, "get off my...

Bo Mikkelsen Delivers More Dark Delights From Denmark With First Shot From WHAT WE BECOME

Posted: 09 Oct 2014 07:00 AM PDT

Intrigued by the current turn towards genre cinema throughout Scandinavia? Well, then, remember the name of Danish writer-director Bo Mikkelsen and his feature debut, What We Become. Because you'll be hearing a lot about this one.Though the film has just wrapped principal photography I had the chance to see Mikkelsen's earlier short film Tabu some time ago along with a test reel for this film while also having the chance to read the script and it's an absolute stunner, filled to the brim with that potent blend of rich characters and a sense of realism that keeps things rooted firmly to the ground no matter how dark they get. I won't spoil anything in terms of story, but here's the official synopsis: The Johansson family's...
