Have Your Say: Will You Be Watching HALLOWEEN Tonight? Posted: 31 Oct 2012 03:00 AM PDT In a shocking display of wordwide unity, every cinema in the world will be playing John Carpenter's Halloween tonight! Not really, of course, but it may seem that way. In the UK, the film is showing at all VUE cinemas this evening -- scroll down this page for listings. In the US, Halloween has received its widest release in years, with many of the screenings starting last week, though some are yet to be held. Just in my city alone, the Texas Theatre will be showing a 35mm print tonight, followed by seasonally-appropriate festivities; a few miles away, a small upscale shopping mall plans an outdoor screening. And that scene will be duplicated all across the country. Will you be heading out to see Halloween... |

Calling All Documentarians! Endeavours Film Fest Launches in Singapore! Posted: 30 Oct 2012 07:42 PM PDT The last decade or so has seen an incredible surge in the popularity, quality and abundance of top-tier documentaries popping up all over the world, captivating and delighting audiences in equal measure. Sadly, there is still limited commercial potential for overseas distributors and so, for a region like Asia, it can still be pretty difficult to see these films - especially on the big screen. However, a new festival launched in Singapore is taking steps to change all that.Endeavours Documentary Film Festival will run in the Lion City from 10-12 May 2013 and sets out to showcase the very best in documentary filmmaking, with an entire section dedicated to emerging new talent from around the region. Endeavours is now taking submissions for short and feature-length... |

Streets Ahead! COMMUNITY Returns February 7th Posted: 30 Oct 2012 03:30 PM PDT October 19th, that feeling within us all, is now a date on the calendar once again. February 7th to be precise, the day season 4 of Community returns to the NBC airwaves. After a truncated 13 episode order, a planned (and dreaded) switch to Friday night, and then the delay, the fourth (and first without creator Dan Harmon) season is back home on Thursdays at 8pm. Funny how things come around, NBC & Sony. Quite.... |
Posted: 30 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT You might laugh at what frightens me. Everyone is built different; one person's fear is another's source of amusement. One evening a friend came over just as I was starting to watch The Shining on TV. My friend laughed as the foreboding music began to play, even before the titles appeared, and then he kept laughing during the opening credit sequence. It was annoying; I asked him what was so funny. "I laugh when I'm really, really scared," were his parting words as he hastily departed. So consider this list a cinematic confessional: five films that, when I first watched them, shook me to my core, sometimes for reasons that I'm still reluctant to explore. Listed in reverse chronological order of first viewing: 5. Ringu... |
Disney Buying Lucasfilm, New STAR WARS Film Planned Posted: 30 Oct 2012 02:12 PM PDT A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away, Mickey Mouse owned every favorite character from your childhood. Disney already has Marvel in their stable and now word comes that they are moving to purchases Lucasfilm in a deal worth more than four billion dollars. The irony here, of course, is that there's a fighting chance Disney will handle the Star Wars universe with more respect than Lucas himself has in recent years. Sure, they'll market the hell out of it, but it's not like George hasn't done that for decades ...According to a report at Variety, included in the deal are plans for a new Star Wars film, with Episode Seven planned for a 2015 release. Does this mean we'll see Lucas' long talked... |
Review: Nuel Naval's A SECRET AFFAIR Posted: 30 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT Nuel Naval's A Secret Affair makes a lot of noise and drama about nothing. The story revolves around acts of infidelity committed by Anton (Derek Ramsey) against his fiancée Raffy (Anne Curtis) with Sam (Andi Eigenmann), Raffy's friend and sorority sister. In fairness to Anton, most of his indiscretions with Sam were committed either outside the relationship, such as before he and Raffy met or during that short cool-off period after Raffy withdrew from their wedding, or at the risk of those indiscretions being exposed by obsessive Sam, who will do everything to snatch Anton away from Raffy. The film is essentially a love triangle involving the most naïve, most immature, and most psychotic of characters, made somewhat palatable by commercial film gloss and occasional... |
Alexandru Solomon To Investigate TARZAN'S TESTICLES Posted: 30 Oct 2012 01:00 PM PDT Half the battle in making a compelling documentary is selecting a compelling topic and Romanian producer / director Alexandru Solomon has got himself a doozy in Tarzan's Testicles. Solomon will be exploring actual research done by the Abkhazian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy throughout the Soviet era which attempted to cross breed humans with monkeys. Says FNE about the project:Romanian director/producer Alexandru Solomon is working on Tarzan's Testicles, a feature documentary on the Abkhazian Scientific Research Institute of Experimental Pathology and Therapy, established in 1927, a renowned primatology center during the Communist era where scientists tried to crossbreed humans and monkeys to demonstrate the triumph of the Revolution over religion. Solomon aims to investigate the relationship between humans and monkeys many years... |
THE GUILLOTINES Fly In Two New Trailers Posted: 30 Oct 2012 12:03 PM PDT What's this? New trailers for Andrew Lau's The Guillotines? Ones that actually include the titular weapon - a flying guillotine - in action? Plus large scale destruction, gorgeous cinematography and promises of plenty more where this all came from.During the Manchurian-ruled Qing Dynasty, Emperor Yong Zheng established a secret assassination squad known as the Guillotines to eliminate all who opposed him. Once heavily favored by the Emperor, the Guillotines are deemed expendable once Emperor Qian Long ascends to the throne and adopts Western ideas and technology. To consolidate his power under a new regime, the Emperor continues to use the Guillotines to persecute the conquered Han Chinese in a reign of terror and oppression.Led by master fighter Leng, the top ranked guillotine squad consists of... |
The 9th Annual Sikh Art & Film Foundation Festival Seeks To Honor Pride and Eliminate Prejudice Posted: 30 Oct 2012 12:00 PM PDT I'm about 100% sure we've never covered this festival, but I think its existence and current set of goals deserves notice. The Sikh Art & Film Foundation will be holding their 9th annual film festival this Saturday, November 3rd in New York City. It may only be one day, and only a handful of films, but this is a community who has been thrust into the spotlight through one tragic significant event earlier this year, and this festival is dedicated to hopefully enlightening people about who the Sikh community is. There will be fifteen new shorts in the program each examining a different facet of Sikh culture and community, the event will culminate in the screening of Oak Creek: In Memoriam, a recently completely short documentary... |
Posted: 30 Oct 2012 11:00 AM PDT Kim Ji-hoon has emerged as one of South Korea's go-to directors for big, populist entertainment. In an industry that is increasingly trending towards low budget, high return fare - i.e. lots and lots of romantic comedies - Kim is going the other route. Big budget. Big action. Big spectacle. He did it with action-horror Sector 7 and now Kim is at it again with The Tower.Yes, this is essentially a remake of 1974 Steve McQueen star vehicle The Towering Inferno and not to be confused with the Pang Brothers' currently in production 3D Hong Kong effort Inferno. The first teaser for Kim's effort is freshly on the scene and it's got everything you could ask for from such a thing: A great big building and... |
Justin Lin Tackling SciFi Comedy SUBDIVISION Posted: 30 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT Justin Lin isn't going to go on making The Fast And The Furious movies forever - at least we don't think he is - and with the director having turned that franchise into one of the strongest and most financially successful action franchises in cinema history the game is on to get him lined up with whatever may be next. Lin has been linked to new Highlander and Terminator films in the past year but here's a little something else:Universal have just picked up new science fiction comedy script Subdivision from writers Alex Ankeles and Morgan Jurgenson with Lin attached to, at minimum, produce and possibly direct. Ankeles and Jurgenson's previous script, Hyperdrive, was on the 2011 Black List while Jurgenson was also a writer... |
Gorgeous First Poster For Park Chan-wook's STOKER Posted: 30 Oct 2012 09:27 AM PDT Oldboy director Park Chan-wook has always had a very particular, very demanding eye for design so it comes as no surprise that the first poster for his upcoming English language debut, Stoker, is a striking and unique piece of work. After India's (Wasikowska's) father dies in an auto accident, her Uncle Charlie (Goode), who she never knew existed, comes to live with her and her emotionally unstable mother Evelyn (Kidman). Soon after his arrival, she comes to suspect this mysterious, charming man has ulterior motives, but instead of feeling outrage or horror, this friendless girl becomes increasingly infatuated with him. Wrtten by Wentwork Miller and starring Mia Wasikowska, Nicole Kidman, Matthew Goode, Dermot Mulroney and Jacki Weaver, Stoker hits screens March 1st.... |
Euro Beat: Jean-Luc Godard Experiments with 3-D, Plus Mike Leigh's Dream Film Gets Closer to Reality Posted: 30 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT Several big announcements concerning giants of European Cinema broke over the last week, including one bio-pic about a giant of European Art. Let's get to it! We've already reported the news that Werner Herzog is apparently set to direct an adaptation of D.B.C. Pierre's novel, Vernon God Little, The book earned a lot of comparisons to Catcher in the Rye and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, so Herzog won't exactly be in familiar territory, maybe that in itself is more normal for him these days. What is still unclear is exactly how this new affects Herzog's previously announced upcoming projects including his Helmut Newton documentary and his Gertrud Bell biopic with Naomi Watts. Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Godard is experimenting with 3-D for his follow up to... |
Home Is Where The Hate Is: Two Korean Terrors On Blu-ray HANSEL & GRETEL / BEDEVILLED Posted: 30 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT At first glance it may be difficult to make the connection between Yim Pil-sung's dark fantasy, Hansel & Gretel and Jang Cheol-soo's visceral revenge thriller Bedevilled, but a little digging beyond the surface shows that they both stem from the same rotten place, the family. These two films, and many if not most Korean thrillers and horror films exploit the facade of family as a wholesome thing. They tear down those most comforting walls, the ones which keep you safe inside your home with your family, and instead use those same walls to trap their protagonists in increasingly hostile circumstances. This theme is by now means limited to these two films, however, in watching them one after the other, the similarities began to jump out... |
