Earlier today, we posted a review for the Hindi independent film, Miss Lovely. While the film isn't a horror picture itself, it very much lives in the world of the cheap creature feature that was a staple of late '80s-early '90s Indian single screen rural theaters. Filmmakers like the Ramsay Brothers, on whom Miss Lovely's Duggal Brothers are very likely loosely based, could make very profitable careers with very meager capital. Like most of South Asian popular entertainment, Hindi Horrors passed by largely unnoticed in the west until Mondo Macabro's Pete Tombs took an active interest and released three of the most action-packed horror double features on the market today.Mondo Macabro's Bollywood Horror Collection is probably one of their most well-loved series, and with good...

Blu-ray Review: PROMETHEUS 4-DISC SPECIAL EDITION Makes the Case For the Prequel

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 03:00 PM PDT

We've covered Prometheus extensively here prior and during its theatrical release, with three very different reviews from our own Brian Clark, Ard Vijn, and Jim Tudor. The consensus (if there is one): it's a mess, but it's a beautiful mess. Fox released this expansive four-disc set recently which includes the 3D version of the film on Blu-ray, a second Blu-ray with the 2D feature, commentary, and extras, and a third Blu-ray packed with additional content. Plus, there's a DVD copy of the film along with a digital code. In any event. key takeaway from the collection of special features in Fox's Prometheus Blu-ray is that from the outset, everyone assembled knew that the Alien prequel (or "parallel" as screenwriter Damon Lindelof calls it) might be...

Jeff Barnaby's RHYMES FOR YOUNG GHOULS Begins Production

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 02:30 PM PDT

Let this be clear right from the outset: Jeff Barnaby is important. The multi-disciplinary artist - a visual artist, poet and writer of short stories as well as an award winning filmmaker - Barnaby is one of those artists with a shockingly distinct voice, one that takes a bitter cynicism, channels it in consistently surprising directions, and ends up in a position that is somehow both bleak and deeply human. That Barnaby is Native Canadian raised on a Mi'gMaq reserve in Quebec is certainly a driving force in his work but it seems somehow dismissive to refer to Barnaby as a Native Filmmaker, as though that somehow implies his work belongs in some sort of cultural ghetto, which it most certainly does not. He's one...

Hollywood Beat: Marvel's Dark Gamble Starts With IRON MAN 3; Steven Spielberg's Action Stance May Be Flexible

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 02:00 PM PDT

The first trailer for Iron Man 3 gives a glimpse of the darker years ahead for Marvel's superheroes. If Iron Man 3 were the conclusion of a traditional, stand-alone trilogy, we'd expect a more triumphant tone. (An easy example: the original Star Wars trilogy.) Instead, Iron Man 2 was constructed as a sequel, rather than as the middle piece of a trio, and stumbled badly even within the parameters it established. Although the film placed Tony Stark in position to join a superhero team, it left his own character's overall arc in an awkward position. As a result, Iron Man 3 hints that it will be closer to what Iron Man 2 should have been: a deeper examination of Tony Stark's character, as people he...

Don't Say It. Don't Write It. Don't Hear it. But Watch It! Red Band EVIL DEAD Trailer!

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 12:17 PM PDT

The new Evil Dead movie is sure to be one of the most divisive horror films in the coming year. And that is divisive because of the franchise's loyal followers, not because any of us have seen the new film and can judge it by its own merits. Sam Raimi's Evil Dead films are some of the most beloved films in all of horror film history. To make a new seems... sacrilegious. I don't want to take up too much more of your time because I know you want to watch the trailer and then voice your opinion below. All we ask is that you respect everyone's opinions or I'll throw your ass in the cellar myself....

Review: SILENT HILL: REVELATION is Nothing of the Sort

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 11:00 AM PDT

This lifeless, uninspired sequel to Christophe Gans' 2006 adaptation of the Konami video game, Silent Hill, retreads much of the same ground, but is almost totally devoid of scares, atmosphere, or most surprisingly, blood.I don't play video games. Save for the occasional dalliance with Angry Birds while on the bus, I simply don't have time for them. Those curious to know how Michael J. Bassett's film measures up to its console-based source material will find nothing to enlighten them here. What I can tell you is how the film compares to its big screen predecessor and how well it delivers as a CG-heavy, 3D-shot fantasy horror film. And the short answer is, not very well.Rose de Silva (Radha Mitchell), who found herself and her daughter...

THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY Gets Its First TV Spot

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT

I keep waiting for the visual style of Peter Jackson's adaptations of The Hobbit to stop feeling off and yet it hasn't. It's the coloring and depth of field, I think, and I'm becoming concerned that Jackson's visual choices are going to keep audiences at arm's length rather than drawing them in to the experience. Also, basing a poster campaign around a fat guy joke does not inspire confidence. That said, it's The Hobbit from the director of The Lord Of The Rings and that means everybody is going to see it, myself included, at least for the first one. And for a further taste of what that means the first TV spot for the first of the trilogy has just arrived. You can find it...

Twitch in Bondage: 7 Intense, Unfilmed Action Scenes from Ian Fleming's 007 Books

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 09:30 AM PDT

It's tough to watch many of the James Bond movies after reading the novels. Rather than simply a suave killing machine, Ian Fleming's Bond was a more troubled, complex character, capable of genuine fear, stubborn determination and surprising humor, and who often felt regret and exhaustion in response to his violent lifestyle. The Daniel Craig incarnation of the series seems to be striving to get back to this hard-edged Bond, and Skyfall director Sam Mendes has even spoken at length about the inspiration he took from Fleming's novels. I've already addressed some of my favorite surprising Bond characterizations from the books, but, with all of this talk about getting back to the source material, now is the perfect time to explore some of the more...

SAIFF 2012 Review: MISS LOVELY Is Among The Most Atypical Indian Films Of The Year

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT

Among the toasts of Cannes' Un Certain Regard section this year was Ashium Ahluwalia's Miss Lovely, a film chronicling the ups and downs of a couple of small potatoes film producers with dollar signs in their eyes. The film takes turns frustrating and tantalizing its audience with equal ease, and all for the good of art. While many will probably tell you that Miss Lovely is grade-A wankery, I hold a rather different opinion on the matter. I think it sits proudly on the vanguard of the new Indian cinema that has been simmering for several years now, and with films like Miss Lovely, is finally reaching it's boiling point. Miss Lovely is both an adoration of the sleazy underbelly of late '80s z-grade Hindi...

'I'm Interested in The Aftermath': Julia Loktev on THE LONELIEST PLANET

Posted: 24 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT

It's been six years since we heard from Julia Loktev after her minimalist, downright Bressonian suicide bomber film, Day Night Day Night. Her new film The Loneliest Planet, shot in the Caucasus mountains in Georgia, is just as enigmatic and elliptical as her first one, if not more. In person, Loktev appears to be fiercely intelligent and thoughtful. But just like her films, I had a very hard time pinning her down on what the film is all about. Twitch: It's been a while since your last film Day Night Day Night, why the gap? Julia Loktev: What a rude question to ask a filmmaker?! (laughs) Oh I didn't mean to be rude... I was just talking to someone about how we were supposed to...
