Loyalty Is Power in Explosive Trailer For Wong Jing's THE LAST TYCOON Posted: 23 Oct 2012 11:47 PM PDT The first trailer for Wong Jing's upcoming gangster epic, The Last Tycoon, hit Distribution Workshop's Facebook page just moments ago, and goes some way to dispelling doubts over whether or not the man can still deliver - because, frankly put, it looks pretty awesome. Chow Yun Fat and Huang Xiaoming play the older and younger versions of notorious Shanghai mobster Du Yuesheng, who had close ties with Chiang Kai Shek and the KMT, in this 1920s-set period actioner. Andrew Lau is on board as a producer, and Sammo Hung, Francis Ng and Ni Ni round out the cast. I'm suddenly a whole lot more excited about this one!... |
BREAKING: Michael Bay In Early Talks With Mark Wahlberg For TRANSFORMERS 4 Posted: 23 Oct 2012 04:30 PM PDT Though things are still very much in early days and there is a good road to go down before anything is official, Twitch has learned that Michael Bay is having early conversations with Mark Wahlberg to star in the upcoming, Paramount backed Transformers 4. Should things work out it's a move that makes perfect sense on multiple levels. First, Wahlberg is one of the most reliable action stars in Hollywood right now, riding a string of consistent hits. He also brings a sort of grounded everyman feel to his characters that will serve the franchise well. Bluntly, every major franchise with a male, action oriented lead brings up Wahlberg at some point of the process. But, more to the point, Wahlberg and Bay just worked... |
Watch Brian Lonano's THE TRANSMISSION Posted: 23 Oct 2012 02:25 PM PDT Indie director Brian Lonano is a great favorite in these parts thanks to his lovingly handcrafted, lo-fidelity but high-charm visual aesthetic. Lonano takes budget limits and turns them into strengths in ways that few can, the most recent example of this being horror short The Transmission. Having wrapped up its festival run, Lonano has released The Transmission online for all to enjoy along with a tutorial on how to execute these low budget effects yourself. Check both videos out below.... |
A Genius Gone Too Soon. British Animator Run Wrake Loses Battle With Cancer. Posted: 23 Oct 2012 01:12 PM PDT Run Wrake's Rabbit triggered a moderate obsession. I stumbled across the multiple award winning animated short back in early 2007 while programming a selection of short films here in Toronto, the film then about halfway through its festival run. It was as striking and immediately iconic a piece of work as you'd ever hope to come across and darkly funny, to boot. I immediately went digging for more and fell into a hole dug by the acclaimed animator.Run Wrake was, quite simply, one of the most strikingly original creative minds of recent years. His work was immediately recognizable as his own, his personality burning through even in his commercial work. And it saddens me to say he 'was' because Wrake passed away Sunday after losing... |
Where's Your Art Film Now, Baby? THE EVIL DEAD Trailer Teaser Arrives. Posted: 23 Oct 2012 12:51 PM PDT It's clear that teaser for trailer aren't going away any time soon so we're probably going to have to come up with a better moniker for them sometime soon. But that'll have to wait a bit because right now we've got a new one to send your way.The full trailer for the Fede Alvarez directed remake of The Evil Dead arrives tomorrow and today we've got a tease for the trailer, one made up roughly evenly of panel footage from the New York Comic Con - footage which admirably tackles the whole "Why remake it?" thing head on - along with footage from the film itself. Response in New York was hugely positive and it's really not hard to see why. Check it below.... |

Watch Award Winning Puppet Noir PAUL Posted: 23 Oct 2012 11:30 AM PDT It was about a year ago that we first wrote about Adam Bizanski's short film Paul. A mindless burglary of his rented apartment forces him to to push through the underworld of Tel Aviv to investigate.Check out the short below.... |

Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:30 AM PDT Word that Jackie Chan was planning a return to his popular Police Story franchise broke in mid-September with word that Little Big Solider director Ding Sheng would helm Police Story 2013. What we didn't know, however, is what sort of picture Police Story 2013 would be as Chan's last foray into the franchise - 2004 effort New Police Story - was a more drama focused effort than previous outings with the film standing as one of the turning points in Chan's recent career, one of the moments where he made a conscious decision to explore different sorts of roles to spare his body the constant pounding of high energy action as he aged. So, is Police Story 2013 going to be another drama focused offering? Not... |
Halloween Horror Primers: The Slashers! Posted: 23 Oct 2012 10:00 AM PDT A mainstay of horror films is the venerable "slasher" sub-genre. Whittling down the good from the bad can be an arduous task though. So instead of you less muck-bound readers getting crap all over your boots, let me help you through the muck to the more palatable examples of the blood good stuff.HALLOWEEN -It's almost impossible to think of Halloween without John Carpenter's iconic killer Michael Myers coming to mind. The escaped lunatic who may or may not be powered by supernatural forces, and wears a blank white mask (really the unpainted guise of William Shatner!) basically has a monopoly on the word "Halloween" itself. The first film is really the only one that truly matters in the franchise, and is an indisputable right of... |
Jamie Foxx Spills Some Blood In New International DJANGO UNCHAINED Trailer Posted: 23 Oct 2012 09:47 AM PDT Quentin Tarantino's latest hits screens on Christmas Day here in North America and the marketing campaign is ramping up. Just a few days back it was a block of unexciting character posters hitting the web. Today? A significantly more interesting new international trailer. This may be the best of the trailers released so far. Lean, mean and bloody it packs a nice little wallop.Set in the South two years before the Civil War, DJANGO UNCHAINED stars Academy Award®-winner Jamie Foxx as Django, a slave whose brutal history with his former owners lands him face-to-face with German-born bounty hunter Dr. King Schultz (Academy Award®-winner Christoph Waltz). Schultz is on the trail of the murderous Brittle brothers, and only Django can lead him to his bounty. The... |

Books to be Scene: Paolo Bacigalupi's THE WINDUP GIRL Posted: 23 Oct 2012 09:00 AM PDT The sun peers over the rim of the earth, casting its blaze across Bangkok. It rushes molten over the wrecked tower bones of the old Expansion, engulfing them in light and heat. It ignites the sharp high roofs of the Grand Palace where the Child Queen lives cloistered with her attendants, and flames from the City Pillar Shrine where monks chant 24-7 on behalf of the city's seawalls and dikes.[...] It's difficult not to be always aware of those high walls and the pressure of the water behind. But the Thais are stubborn and have fought to keep their revered city from drowning. With coal-fired pumps and leveed labor and a deep faith in the visionary leadership of their Chakri Dynasty, they have so far... |
Posted: 23 Oct 2012 08:58 AM PDT There are in this world certain films that seemed destined to achieve not fame but notoriety through failure on a spectacular scale. Chinese-American co-production Empires Of The Deep has long appeared likely to be one of those and with the arrival of the first trailer we can now say, "Oh, hell yes. This looks horrible in the way that very few things can ever hope to be horrible."What went wrong? Let's say a whole lot of everything. Word first started to circulate about the project all the way back in February of 2009. The dream project of Chinese real estate tycoon Jon Jiang, who wrote the script himself and partially financed with his own money, the film was originally announced with Monica Bellucci as the... |
VIFF 2012 Wrap-Up: All Apologies, A Mere Life, and In the Name of Love Posted: 23 Oct 2012 08:00 AM PDT Emily Tang's beautiful, smart, and moving Perfect Life is not only one of my favorite VIFF films of 2008, but one of my favorite films period (I don't keep a list, I just know that the memorable ones must be the ones I like most), and as far as I can tell, it has received no semblance of a North American release since then. So her 2012 outing, All Apologies, was, needless to say, highly anticipated for me. There are several reasons why this competent, well-directed drama fails to achieve that "memorable" status that is so coveted during a festival wherein goers are seeing upwards of five films a day. At its core, All Apologies--the story of a man who rapes and (successfully) impregnates... |
Interview: GREYSTONE PARK And Sean Stone Want To Scare You This Halloween Posted: 23 Oct 2012 07:00 AM PDT Sean Stone has a lot to live up to. The son of a very famous director (Oliver Stone), Sean begins carving out his own niche in film making with his horror film Greystone Park. One of the many current releases that employs the found footage device, Greystone Park, an abandoned mental institution, is a real place which Sean says he and his crew broke into, and is truly haunted. Having seen the film, I can say it does indeed contain some genuine scares, and Sean exhibits an ability at creating tension and frightening the audience. What he had to say about the process of creating his first feature, and his own beliefs in the supernatural was quite interesting. Believe him, don't believe him, either... |
