Turkey Gets Paranormal With GORUNMEYENLER Posted: 26 Nov 2012 03:00 AM PST Turkey is looking to make a splash in the found footage game with Melikşah Altuntaş' upcoming horror film Görünmeyenler and, honestly, it's a bit of a shame that the film is coming to this particular game relatively late. Because while the setup is quite familiar - strange goings on in a house captured on home video - and appears to stick closely to the well established rules of the genre, Altuntaş has clearly got some skill behind the camera and the scares evident in the trailers are quite effective. Take a look at the teaser and trailer below.... |

I posted some information about the film a couple of days ago, and not much has changed since then, so I urge you to click through the link below for the first seven minutes of the film after checking out this trailerWithout further ado, the trailer for The Attacks of 26/11.... |
THE BODY, CITADEL Win Big at Paris International Fantastic Film Festival Posted: 26 Nov 2012 01:00 AM PST According to the team responsible for the Paris International Fantastic Film Festival, "going to see horror and fantastic films on the big screen today is a militant act." This quote from the awards press release should give you a decent idea of the programmers and organizers' passion and dedication for genre film. This isn't a festival where you just show your ticket, zone out and watch Silent Hill: Revelations on closing night. At PIFFF, twenty faceless nurses terrorized spectators as they made their way to the theater. Similarly, the festival called in the heavy hitters from France's fantastic film scene to chair their jury, including Xavier Gens (Frontier(s), The Divide) and Pascal Laugier (Martyrs, The Tall Man). Their choices, along with those of the short... |
Doha Tribeca Film Festival 2012: Wrap Up, Highlights and Impressions Posted: 26 Nov 2012 12:00 AM PST The 4th Doha Tribeca Film Festival wrapped up proceedings on Saturday night, bringing to end an enthralling eight day celebration of World Cinema, including an impressive selection of films from the MENA (Middle East & North Africa) region, and a glimpse at the burgeoning industry that is sparking into life in Qatar. Twitch was in attendance for the second half of the festival, where I was able to sample of variety of feature films, shorts and documentaries from around the region, as well as savour the unique delights of Doha itself.Launched in 2009, the Doha Tribeca Film Festival is building some serious momentum in the city, screening more than 80 feature films from all over the world, to a local audience largely unfamiliar with cinema... |

BEIJING BLUES and LIFE WITHOUT PRINCIPLE Top Taipei Golden Horse Awards Posted: 25 Nov 2012 04:30 PM PST Gao Qunshu's Beijing Blues was the surprise winner at the 2012 Taipei Golden Horse Awards on Saturday night, bagging the award for Best Film, as well as Best Cinematography and Best Editing. This low-budget mainland production about a plain clothes police officer wrestling with his soul while taking down petty thieves and con artists beat off high-profile competition from the likes of Johnnie To's Life Without Principle and Lou Ye's Mystery to take home the top prize in what are regarded by many as the most prestigious awards in Asian Cinema. Neither of those other films went home empty-handed, however, as To was named Best Director and Lau Ching Wan nabbed the Best Actor prize, while Mystery won the award for Best Original Score as well... |
Gorgeous Poster And Brief Teaser For Filipino Drama MAMAY UMENG Posted: 25 Nov 2012 02:00 PM PST Soon to premiere as part of the Cinema One Originals series in the Philippines, Dwein Baltazar's Mamay Umeng may be short on plot details but it is certainly long on atmosphere. Though the official synopsis is brief - in a quaint provincial town, an elderly man awaits his inevitable fate - the poster to the left has certainly got our attention. You can take a look at a brief teaser below as well.... |
Blu-ray Review: CHILDREN WHO CHASE LOST VOICES (Sentai Filmworks) Posted: 25 Nov 2012 01:00 PM PST Shinkai Makoto is one of the rising forces in modern anime . His work on shorts like Voices From a Distant Star led to early critical and commercial success, but it was The Place Promised in Our Early Years & his triptych 5 Centimeters Per Second that really sealed the deal and made him a big name. Though I've only seen a couple of his features, even I can pick out his very particular style, and it is nice to have a filmmaker with a distinctive look. Shinkai's latest, Children Who Chase Lost Voices (From Deep Below) both expands on that look and reverts to a bit too much homage for my taste. What we get is a something on the order of a band... |
Utterly Mad Teaser For Khavn De La Cruz's EDSA XXX Posted: 25 Nov 2012 12:00 PM PST Pinoy director Khavn De La Cruz is clearly a crazy person. With his raucous documentary Mondo Manila touring the world right now De La Cruz has a pair of other projects in the works, the first of which is poised to premiere as part of the Cinema One Originals series. Titled EDSA XXX: Nothing Ever Changes In The Republic Of Ever-Change, De La Cruz describes his film as a scifi black comedy rock opera and that is clearly only scraping the surface. Ready for one hell of a synopsis? Because here it comes:"EDSA XXX" takes us on a wild ride through the ups and downs, twists and turns in the life of one man's downfall and the rise to fame of another. The present leader... |
DVD Review: CHRISTMAS EVIL Isn't Quite What You'd Expect Posted: 25 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Often grouped in the sub-genre of Festive Slasher pics alongside Silent Night, Deadly Night and Black Christmas, the misleadingly (re)titled Christmas Evil actually has altogether different ambitions. Though not always succeeding in them, it's a fascinating curiosity nonetheless. Originally, and rather wonderfully, named You Better Watch Out (Arrow's print carries that title), it's easy to see why Lewis Jackson's first and, to date, only feature ended up chopped around and tossed out into the snow as a generic yuletide slasher. The sell is simple: Traumatised during a childhood encounter with Santa, a disgruntled toy factory employee embarks on a Christmas killing spree. Yet, really, it's a grimy and intimate portrait of a man's nervous breakdown. Surprisingly light on slashing, it's heavy on psychological anguish and... |

DVD Review: GANGS OF WASSEYPUR Is An Epic Experience Hamstrung By A Half-Assed DVD Posted: 25 Nov 2012 09:00 AM PST I'm only slightly bitter that I wasn't the first Twitcher to get his critical mitts on Anurag Kashyap's magnificently indulgent crime epic Gangs of Wasseypur, that honor belongs to Kurt Halfyard who saw it at TIFF. Thankfully, I can report that Kurt's take on the film mostly mirrors my own, and so reiterating his own points would be selfish on my part, so I'll try to keep it to a minimum. However, I do believe there are a few things that Kurt was perhaps not in a position to pull from the story that I'd like to touch upon. Before I get to that, I want to give Kurt his due and pull a few words from his review that really sum up my feelings... |
