Posted: 27 Dec 2012 04:00 PM PST Dustin Hoffman, as an actor, has essayed some of the most iconic and edgy roles to hit the big screen: counterculture hero Benjamin Braddock in The Graduate, Ratso Rizzo in Midnight Cowboy, the nebbish turned avenger in Straw Dogs, Lenny Bruce, Marathon Man, Carl Bernstein, among many others. But for his first film as a director, he has chosen a subject matter and milieu far, far afield from this previous work: the genteel and very, very British comedy-drama Quartet, based on a 1999 play by Ronald Harwood, who also scripted. As a first-time filmmaker at the age of 75, Hoffman turns his camera lens on characters around his own age, who are similarly dealing with life in its latter stages, staring mortality squarely in the... |
Behind The Scenes Shots From James Lee's Teen Horror SUNTII@facebook.com Posted: 27 Dec 2012 01:15 PM PST Malaysian director James Lee never stops working. Never. And he seemingly has never met a genre that he's not game to tackle at least once or twice, either, his filmography a hugely varied affair ranging from acclaimed indie arthouse fare to gangster dramas to comedies to action and teen horror. And he's headed back to the teen horror world for the first time since his ultra bloody tour de force, Histeria.Lee has wrapped principal photography on his latest effort, one that combines elements of I Know What You Did Last Summer and The Ring. Titled - at least for the time being, we'll see what the corporate monster thinks of the name - Suntii@facebook.com the picture revolves around a mysterious girl (Suntii) who friends people... |
Weinberg's Big Fat 2012 Year-End Global Horror Cinema Summary Pajama Jammy Jam Posted: 27 Dec 2012 10:00 AM PST As we close out another year, let's take some time to look back over the past 12 months in horror cinema. You're already here. You may as well just scan the damn lists, right? As always, please keep in mind that I have a rather liberal definition of what qualifies as a horror film, but that's only because I'm a super genius. Thanks to all the filmmakers who keep serving our beloved genre, thanks to my Twitch editors Todd and Peter (and my excellent FEARnet editors as well), and big thanks to the folks at UK Frightfest, Fantasia, Toronto After Dark, L.A. Screamfest, SXSW, and Fantastic Fest for helping us see what the world has to offer the horror fans -- even before the distributors... |
Review: PROMISED LAND, A Well-Intentioned But Dramatically Inert Environmental-Issue Drama Posted: 27 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Promised Land, the latest film from director Gus Van Sant, written by two of its actors, John Krasinski and Matt Damon, is nothing if not extremely topical. At its heart is the hot-button environmental issue of hydraulic fracturing, better known as "fracking," a process by which natural gas is extracted from the ground by deep drilling through shale rock formations from which the gas is released and then extracted. This practice is sold by the companies that do this as a way to reduce and eventually eliminate the U.S.'s dependence on foreign oil, as well as enrich the communities who allow their lands to be drilled. However, many environmental activists and scientists argue that the chemicals used in this process contaminate underground water, resulting in poisoned... |
First Look At Cassel And McAvoy In Danny Boyle's TRANCE Posted: 27 Dec 2012 08:00 AM PST Shot immediately before his commitments to the 2012 Olympics kicked in, Danny Boyle is now putting the final buff and polish on his art heist noir Trance prior to a reported spring 2013 release and the first proper stills from the film have arrived via USA Today.Vincent Cassel stars as the leader of a gang of thieves who conscript art auctioneer James McAvoy into helping them pull a major job. Cue amnesia for McAvoy and unhappy gangsters calling in a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) to dredge out the location of a painting hidden by McAvoy. That's Cassel up above, obviously, and you can find an image of McAvoy as well below.... |
DANGER 5 Arrives On Hulu, Gets Straight To The Biscuits Posted: 27 Dec 2012 07:30 AM PST One of the greatest TV shows to premiere in 2012 was Danger 5. A madcap pastiche of spy tropes, ridiculous costumes and elaborate plywood sets, Danger 5 asks what if World War II happened during the swinging 1960s, and a crack team of international secret agents was formed by a blazer-wearing Colonel with an eagle's head, and given a weekly mission to hunt down and kill Adolf Hitler? Danger 5 creators Dario Russo and David Ashby then answer this question with aplomb. While it was made for Australian TV, viewers around the world have been trying to watch this show all year. Now comes news that Danger 5 is finally available to watch in the US via Hulu.Today we've heard the sad news that Thunderbirds creator... |
Gerry Anderson (THUNDERBIRDS, SPACE 1999) Is Gone Posted: 27 Dec 2012 05:30 AM PST Sad news yesterday, as UK newspaper The Guardian published confirmation that legendary animator and series creator Gerry Anderson has died at the age of 83. In the 60s, Gerry Anderson was responsible for several famous science fiction puppet series like Thunderbirds, Captain Scarlet and Stingray. Later he branched out into live action with the film Journey to the Far Side of the Sun, and series like UFO and Space 1999. If you were between the ages of 5 and 25 sometime during the 60s or 70s, you probably loved his work. Me, I have to say thanks for countless afternoons of wonder. Mr Anderson has been a great inspiration and influence for many, and he will be missed.... |
