Are You Ready To Return To KILOMETER 31? Posted: 28 Dec 2012 01:00 PM PST It was back in 2006 that Mexican director Rigoberto Castaneda burst on to the international horror scene with Kilometer 31, an atmospheric ghost story that proved a big hit in Mexico and abroad and set Castaneda up as one of the brightest young genre talents in the nation. Thing is, the nation is question doesn't generally get behind genre directors - even successful ones - and so his work since has been dominantly in television. But he's coming back to the big screen now and doing it the old fashioned way: With a sequel to his original hit.At least, I assume Castaneda is directing ... details are very thin on the upcoming Kilometer 31 sequel, beyond the simple fact that it is happening, as evidenced... |
First Shot From Banjong Pisanthanakun's PEE MAK PHRAKANONG Posted: 28 Dec 2012 12:00 PM PST Thai director Banjong Pisanthanakun - co-director of Shutter and Alone, solo contributor to both Phobia horror anthology projects and helmer of the hysterical N Is For Nuptials segment in The ABCs of Death - is hard at work on his latest effort, the feature horror comedy Pee Mak Phrakanong. While plot details are generally being kept under wraps - all we've been told is that it's a sort of gender inversion of the classic Nang Nak legend - and there is not yet an English title for the film, Pisanthanakun let us know that the quartet of young men who starred in his Phobia shorts would be in the cast here as well along with star Mario Maurer. And whaddaya know? There they all are... |
Kickstart This! Bill Plympton's CHEATIN' Posted: 28 Dec 2012 11:00 AM PST Oscar winning independent animator Bill Plympton needs your help. Not your actual help, really, he's got skilled people (himself included) on hand to do all the actual work. He just needs your money. Plympton is plugging away on his 7th feature film, Cheatin', he's messing with a new approach to coloring his work and - not being funded by the monstrosity that is Disney or any other such corporate entity - he's looking for help to get this thing over the finish line in a reasonable length of time.CHEATIN' is an animated adult tale of love, jealousy, revenge, and murder - full of nudity and violence, but also with my surreal sense of humor. The story is inspired by the work of James M. Cain... |

First Four Minutes Of WARM BODIES Are Charming, Clever Stuff Posted: 28 Dec 2012 09:30 AM PST I admit it. I wrote of Jonathan Levine's Warm Bodies sight unseen as a weak attempt to somehow transform the zombie craze into fodder for the Twilight set, a move I easily convinced myself I had no interest in. And, while it very definitely is being marketed to that crowd the fact is I should have known better if for no other reason than because Levine is very, very good. And so here I am eating crow and declaring myself wrong. The first four minutes of the film have been released online and the clip is just jammed full with charming, clever, funny stuff that puts a very different spin on a very tired genre. Yes, this looks very, very good and while the horror set... |
Posted: 28 Dec 2012 09:00 AM PST Acclaimed Indonesian director Mouly Surya makes an appearance in the Sundance World Competition selection with What They Don't Talk About When They Talk About Love, a romantic drama set in a school for the visually impaired. At a high school for the visually impaired in Jakarta, Indonesia, the students are like any other teenagers: they attend classes, pursue artistic endeavors, and fall in love. The most privileged of the bunch, Diana, patiently awaits signs of womanhood and humors her mother's attempts to mold her into the perfect girl. The beautiful Fitri has no shortage of male attention and enters into a passionate affair with, unbeknownst to her, a hearing-impaired punk rocker who is masquerading as a doctor. Meanwhile, Maya, blind since birth, aspires to be an... |

The Undead Quake Before The Coming Of The ZOMBIE GUILLOTINE Posted: 28 Dec 2012 07:05 AM PST The flying guillotine re-purposed as a zombie fighting weapon? Oh, yes please. With Andrew Lau's The Guillotines out now in Hong Kong theaters and the undead shambling to new heights of popularity thanks to The Walking Dead a clever crew of filmmakers in Hong Kong have cooked up Zombie Guillotines, a short film that fuses the two. Take a look at the splattery fun below and remember to hit the CC button to turn on the English subtitles.... |
