Review: TALAASH Proves That Big Budgets Don't Have To Pander To Tiny Brains Posted: 30 Nov 2012 08:30 PM PST There is a very pronounced regressive trend over the last few years in Indian cinema. As Bollywood films gain visibility in the wake of India-focused films like Slumdog Millionaire, the local studios have decided to double down on their old patterns of production, rather than using this new potential audience as a way to reach out to the world. In a way, it's kind of admirable. India has a 100 year long glorious cinematic tradition that is unlike that of any other nation. There is, of course, something to be proud of in that. However, the way that Bollywood's devotion to tradition has manifested most often is in silly "action entertainers" like the films of Rohit Shetty or Prabhu Deva. I love many of these... |

Suitcases, Badminton And Gangsters In Marjane Satrapi's LA BANDE DES JOTAS Posted: 30 Nov 2012 03:30 PM PST We've come to expect certain things from Persepolis and Chicken With Plums director Marjane Satrapi and it would appear that gleefully delivering something else entirely is a significant part of the point to her latest effort La Bande Des Jotas. Heck, the fact that it's not a typical Satrapi film is happily referenced in the trailer. This time out Satrapi has put aside the autobiographical elements of her earlier work and instead embraced what looks to be an Coen-esque spin on crime comedy, one laced with absurdity and colorful characters. Characters who love badminton and carry guns. Check out the trailer below for a taste of what I mean.... |
The Training Starts Young In Muay Thai Documentary FISTS OF PRIDE Posted: 30 Nov 2012 03:05 PM PST Set along the border of Thailand and Burma, Hélène Choquett's documentary Fists Of Pride chronicles the lives of the young children - most of them the children of illegal Burmese immigrants - training as muay thai fighters to support their families.Fists of Pride follows Little Tiger and his fellow fighters as their Thai coaches prepare them for the annual Water Festival competition. In a boxing camp on the Thai-Burmese border the children of mostly illegal migrant workers fleeing Burma live and train for prize fights. In a region where combat sports have always been a matter of honor and money, the film reveals their daily struggles. Bets are open and as the hope of prize money rises, the young boxers contemplate what it could mean... |
MALDITOS SEAN Director Visits THE CORPORATION Posted: 30 Nov 2012 11:30 AM PST Argentinian director Fabian Forte turned heads on the international genre fest circuit last year with his feature film Malditos Sean (Cursed Bastards) and he's gearing up to do so again with his new effort La Corporacion (The Corporation). An ultra dark satire of corporate culture this appears to be one of those films that sets you up to believe it is one thing before spinning off into an entirely different and more original direction. Seriously, give the trailer a moment or two when you sit down to watch it. An English subtitled version is below.... |
Mexico's HALLEY Brings The Undead To The Arthouse Posted: 30 Nov 2012 11:00 AM PST Freshly announced as a selection at Sundance, Sebastian Hofmann's Halley looks to be the most unusual sort of undead film: One that dares enter the arthouse.Alberto is dead and can no longer hide it. Make-up and perfume can no longer conceal his quickly decomposing body. Dismayed, he decides to withdraw from the world. But before surrendering to his living death, Alberto forms an unusual friendship with Luly, the manager of the 24-hour gym where he works as a night guard. In a world where it appears that everything that can be done with the undead has been done there's always a bit of a charge when somebody finds a new point of entry into the material and it appears that Hoffman has done exactly that.... |

Pope Benedict Biopic In The Works Posted: 30 Nov 2012 09:32 AM PST One of the comic books I read quite a few times as a kid was Marvel's Pope John Paul II story. Seriously. Here's a link. For an unlikely comic, it's pretty compelling and traces his life as a young man and priest, his elevation to become Pope, and culminates around the 1981 assassination attempt on his life. Now we're in the age of biopics, there's news reports that German producers are developing a biopic of Pope Benedict XVI after acquiring the rights to an upcoming biography of the Pope by the Bavarian author of three best-selling interview books with the pontiff.Producers Marcus Mende and Peter Weckert have said the film will cover all areas of Joseph Ratzinger's life and work from his birth on Easter night... |
Wonderfully Disturbing Ice Cream Ad: I may never eat ice cream again. Posted: 30 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST Normally I wouldn't post a commercial just because I found it entertaining. But this may be the most disturbing ad I've ever seen. Ice cream anyone? Now would be the time to find out who made this, what they are currently working on and how on earth we can get them to revisit this material in the form of a full length horror film. Either way this is a commercial that can hardly be called vanilla. ... |
Interview: Jang Kun-jae Talks SLEEPLESS NIGHT Posted: 30 Nov 2012 08:00 AM PST Following his debut Eighteen's successful run on the international festival circuit in 2009, the highlight of which was a grand prize win as part of the Vancouver International Film Festival's Tigers & Dragons section, Jang Kun-jae has proven that he is no fluke with his sophomore feature. Sleepless Night debuted in Jeonju International Film Festival where it picked a pair of prizes, including the top Korean film prize and audience award before hitting the road for what is likely to be a lengthy festival run. Twitch was able to catch up Jang during the Busan Film Fest. Twitch: How do you feel about Sleepless Night's positive reception? Jang Kun-jae: The public's response is of course very important to me, especially as a director who did... |
Global Ice Age Adventure WYNTER DARK Resurfaces As Immersive Graphic Novel Posted: 30 Nov 2012 07:00 AM PST A few years ago producer Pete Ford announced he was developing an ambitious post-apocalyptic adventure film Wynter Dark set during a world-wide Ice Age and featuring savage polar bears.Meanwhile Ford found another crazy-ass polar bears movie to make, Cold Patrol, and has decided to turn Wynter Dark into an epic immersive graphic novel app for iPads and tablet devices.Of course it's a crowd-funded project but refreshingly this approach seems to have been very thoughtfully put together, and the resulting graphic novel and their plans to keep adding related content sounds better than 90% of the crowd-funded projects going 'round. Check out the video below and see the Pozible link for more.... |

Theatrical Trailer For Katie Aselton's BLACK ROCK Posted: 30 Nov 2012 06:00 AM PST After premiering at last year's Sundance, Katie Aselton's indie thriller Black Rock is now gearing up for theatrical release in the US. And we know what that means: New trailer.A trio of childhood friends reunite for a camping trip on a woodsy getaway off the coast of Maine. Sarah, the group's peacekeeper, tricks Abby and Lou into spending time together after a tricky romantic mishap drove a wedge between them. Bad blood appears to subside, but its relevance dissolves in the face of a much larger problem: when the group runs into a war veteran they know from high school, a nighttime hangout session turns sour and the women of Black Rock have to confront something far more dangerous-and heavily armed- than their feelings.Aselton also... |
LAST RIDE Director Glendyn Ivin To Helm Epic GALLIPOLI Series Posted: 30 Nov 2012 05:32 AM PST Australian television network Channel Nine has begun developing a TV series about the 1915 Gallipoli landing during World War I which they've humbly announced will be the "most ambitious television drama in Australian history."While it's exciting that an epic Band of Brothers-style series about Australian and New Zealand soldiers fighting side-by-side in the most lionized battle in Australian history is being made, of particular interest to Twitch readers is that Glendyn Ivin will be at the helm as series director. After winning at Cannes with his short film Cracker Bag, Glendyn made Last Ride, which features arguably a career-best performance by Hugo Weaving. He's since turned his sights to epic television, directing both the Beaconsfield mining disaster mini-series and episodes of the acclaimed mini-series Puberty Blues.Production on... |
