DVD Review: ISN'T ANYONE ALIVE? Reinvents Ishii Sogo As Ishii Gakuryu

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 06:35 PM PST

After a lengthy absence, Ishii Sogo returns with a new film. Except, it's not really "Ishii Sogo" that's directing it. Ishii Sogo changed his name to Ishii Gakuryu and should you doubt his intentions, he had very good reasons to do so. Isn't Anyone Alive? (Ikiteru Mono Wa Inainoka) is a great film, but not what you'd expect from a guy who started the Japanese punk genre.  When I heard Ishii Sogo was changing his credit name, I found the move rather dubious. Struggling with your persona is one thing, but going so far as to possibly alienate yourself from a portion of your longtime fans is quite a move. Then again, if you look at the world of music, musicians are doing this all...

IFFR 2013 Review: Johnnie To's DRUG WAR Is Here To Wake Us All Up

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 05:30 PM PST

(Johnnie To is the drug for me...) The International Film Festival Rotterdam has a great reputation for including loads of Asian content in its catalogue each year. The modified line-ups of recent years have not changed this, although the big Asian blockbusters are increasingly sparse and arthouse films have become the norm. This year I have already seen more low-budget (and no-budget) films than I care to, each filled with extremely long shots, filmed with semi-professional gear. So thank God for Johnnie To and his latest film Drug War, which spiced the joint up a bit with some masterfully made high-octane entertainment. Heroic cops battle villainous thugs and it all looks slick and stylish. Is it a classic? Probably not. Did I like it? Oh...

The Stack. COMPLIANCE, LIGHTNING BUG, WAKE IN FRIGHT, THE POSSESSION, and JACK AND DIANE

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 02:05 PM PST

Welcome back to The Stack. This week's releases were exceptionally fun to sift thru and I'm especially glad to be able to chat about some obscure stuff you might not have heard of before. The disturbing Compliance, the surprisingly effective Lightning Bug from way back in 2004, the almost lost forever Wake In Fright, the outright weird occult thriller The Possesion and even weirder but far more interesting horror romance Jack and Diane. Themes this week ranged all over the place from spirituality, to coming of age, to the role of authority and first love. ...

Here's Your First Look At Ti West's THE SACRAMENT

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 10:30 AM PST

Run, AJ Bowen, run!... Or well, that appears to be the indie horror mainstay in the above still, the first from the Savannah, Georgia set of Ti West's latest entitled The Sacrament.Produced by Eli Roth, we don't know a whole on this one at the moment other than that the cast is a veritable who's who of the indie scene right now with Amy Seimetz, Kate Lyn Sheil, Joe Swanberg and Kentucker Audley rounding out the leads. Fans of Adam Wingard's A Horrible Way To Die may also see this as something of a reunion for Seimetz, Swanberg and Bowen who made up that film's dour trio. Also worth noting, this appears to be the first time Bowen is running away from something or someone...

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 08:15 AM PST

Directors Derek Van Gorder and Otto Stockmeier set themselves and interesting challenge with their scifi short C: 299, 792 km/s. The set out to make a classically styled space opera using nothing but classic effects. That is to say the duo used no CGI or green screen effects at all, choosing instead to execute the entire film using nothing but in-camera optical effects.C is the story of Lieutenant Commander Malleck, and her radical act of mutiny aboard the KESTROS IV. With the help of her co-conspirators, she attempts to harness this weapon of mass destruction for a grand new purpose. Sundance 2013: S-VHS Interview with Directors Simon Barrett, Jason Eisener and Adam Wingard and Producer Roxanne Benjamin

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST

After the premier of S-VHS, the horror film anthology sequel to last year's V/H/S, I was able to get in a few quick questions with some of the filmmakers behind this impressive, multi-national collaboration. I saw V/H/S here last year and really liked it. As is rarely the case with sequels though, it felt to me like you really stepped it up and improved on the concept with S-VHS. It really felt tight, and while some of the pieces in the anthology last year stood out to me as being stronger than others, in S-VHS every segment felt just as strong as the last. Adam Wingard: The main thing we learned from V/H/S is that a found footage anthology film should not be two...

SUNDANCE 2013 Review: LOVELACE Is A Revisionist Ordeal

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

Hot on the heels of the sexual revolution, 1972's pornographic breakout hit Deep Throat brought conservative America to its proverbial knees, raking in millions and turning its lead actress, Linda Lovelace, into a bona-fide star.In Lovelace, actress Amanda Seyfried does an admirable job of portraying Linda Susan Boreman (her pre-Lovelace name), a clenched and repressed young woman, cowed by a religious mother and ineffective father (played by an unrecognizable Sharon Stone and T2's Robert Patrick) who finds herself when she chooses to go-go dance for a roller rink band. As fate would have it, Chuck Traynor (Peter Sarsgaard in full on Thomas Jane Boogie Nights mode) is there that night, and quickly insinuates himself to the innocent little lamb that is Linda. Soon Chuck is...
