Lucasfilm Update: STAR WARS Prequels 3D Release "Postponed"

Posted: 29 Jan 2013 03:00 AM PST

According to the official Star Wars site:"Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall's scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date."Count me as one of those disappointed by the news. I tried to explain why even the much derided The Phantom Menace benefited from the post-conversion, finding that for the most part the dimensionalization was done with quite a bit of artistic sensitivity (especially given the subject matter)....

English Subtitled Trailer For Arty Swedish Thriller CRESTFALLEN

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST

Just this past week I was reading an article in The New Yorker - the lady has better taste in reading than I do - arguing that a core factor in the export of Scandinavian thrillers is their abundance of strong, complex female characters. And it seems only fitting that on the heels of such a thing I have stumbled across an English subtitled trailer for Johan Lundh's upcoming Crestfallen (Den som söker). When Tuva loses her parents in a car crash she is given the unenviable task of cleaning up their house. In a locked drawer in her father's study she finds some paperwork - it turns out that she is adopted. It's a shocking revelation that sets her out on a quest to find...

Jakob Cedergren Searches For SANCTUARY

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST

Danish star Jakob Cedergren first caught my eye in Dagur Kari's 2005 effort Dark Horse, a sly and understated sense of humor making him a standout in the piece. It turns out I'd already seen Cedergren at least once before that - in Thomas Anders Jensen's The Green Butchers - but Dark Horse is where it became clear that he was one to watch. And he has rewarded audiences since, anchoring films such as the stellar Terribly Happy and Submarino while proving himself one of the most reliable performers in the region.Cedergren appears next in a Swedish production, the dramatic thriller Sanctuary (Faro) by Fredrik Edfeldt. Faro is about a man who flees into the forest with his daughter to escape a prison sentence. Chased...

Taste Plasmodial Slime Mould in THE CREEPING GARDEN

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 09:30 AM PST

For many readers, the name Jasper Sharp is familiar as a leading voice in Japanese film criticism, co-founder of MidnightEye.com and author of Behind The Pink Curtain, the Complete History of Japanese Sex Cinema. Last summer, over a couple of late night pints at his incredible, one-of-a-kind film festival Zipangu Fest, Sharp told me about a documentary project he was developing on plasmodial slime moulds. No, I had no idea what he meant either, just that it sounded awesome but I was sworn to secrecy.Earlier today, however, Sharp formally announced the existence of The Creeping Garden, co-directed by himself and documentarian Tim Grabham (KanZeOn), and boasting an original score from Sonic Youth's Jim O'Rourke. He also released a 3-minute "taster" for the film, featuring incredible...

Antonio Tublen's LFO Teaser Burrows Into Your Brain

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST

It was a few years back that Swedish director Antonio Tublen was last in these pages, his quirky comedy Original - co-directed with Alexander Brondstedt - charming with a clever trailer and winning acclaim on a healthy international festival run that included an appearance at Tribeca and a major win in Shanghai. And now Tublen is back with darkly comic scifi LFO.LFO is a dark comedy/drama/Sci-Fi about a man who realizes that he can hypnotise with sound. He starts experimenting on his neighbors, where the abuse of power takes over and, eventually, severe consequences for mankind are at stake. Now in editing for a 2013 release, Tublen has released a first teaser for the film. Check it below....

Review: Mark Meily's EL PRESIDENTE Is A Historical Annoyance

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST

A lot has already been said and written about the historical inaccuracies of Mark Meily's El Presidente, how the glamour project dastardly re-portrayed historical figures to suit enlarged egos and their enlarged pockets. Andres Bonifacio (played with a notable lack of charm by Cesar Montano), the founder of the Philippine revolution who was tragically killed by his fellow men, is depicted as a severely sore loser. Antonio Luna (played, complete with gritting teeth, by Christopher de Leon), a top-ranking general of the revolutionary government who was murdered, is shown to be cruel, despotic and deserving of his embarrassing death as a matter of narrative logic. Emilio Aguinaldo (played with uncharacteristic and unbelievable nobility by Jorge Estregan), the titular president, reaps all the rewards of Meily's...

Sundance 2013 Review: TOY'S HOUSE - A Joyous, Feel-Good Movie About Being Young And Dreaming BIG

Posted: 28 Jan 2013 07:30 AM PST

The worst part about being a kid is the realization that one day you'll be an adult. Your only responsibilities are cleaning your room (throwing everything under the bed), eating your vegetables (feeding them to the dog), and getting your homework done (copying from a friend just before class). And then there are the teen years when you think parents are the worst and want to just run away and live like a king under your own roof. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts explores this in Toy's House, an unforgettable coming-of-age comedy that's sweet, witty, and brings back the joys of being young and full of life. Joe Toy (Nick Robinson) lives with his divorced father, Frank (Nick Offerman). They don't like each other too much. In fact,...
