John Abraham Will Kick Your Ass In Extreme Slow Motion In The SHOOTOUT AT WADALA Posted: 23 Jan 2013 12:00 AM PST The first trailer for Sanjay Gupta's highly anticipated cops vs. gangsters flick, Shootout at Wadala has appeared online and it looks pretty fucking stylish. Twitch readers might know Gupta from a few of his older films like Kaante or Zinda, but this looks like a significant step up from those films, even though I enjoyed them well enough. This film is a thematic prequel to a film he produced back in 2007 called Shootout at Lokhandwala, which recreated a famous gun battle between gangsters and Mumbai cops. Wadala takes the feud back to the seventies, when India was even more inundated with wicked mustaches than it is today. While the trailer is stylish enough on its own, it is really the cast of this beast that... |
First Look At The Korean Action Heroines In THE HUNTRESSES Posted: 22 Jan 2013 11:36 PM PST Lead actress trio Ha Ji-won (As One), Kang Ye-won (Quick) and Son Ga-in are The Huntresses, a somewhat Korean equivalent to The Three Musketeers or Charlies Angel, only these beautiful bounty hunters are from the Joseon Dynasty. The film is a historical action adventure revolving around three strong female protagonists, each with a unique skill, battling a powerful group that is trying to overthrow the royal family and gain absolute power.Director Park Je-Hyun compares the action-style of these characters, played by Ha, Kang and Son, to Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan and Jet Li respectively. "I think the girls resemble them in a way because HA has a charismatic look, KANG looks clumsy but always manages to handle matters and SON is a dab hand at beating opponents."Here's... |
Gaiman's THE GRAVEYARD BOOK Rises With Ron Howard At The Helm? Posted: 22 Jan 2013 08:20 PM PST When it appeared there was no hope for an adaptation of Neil Gaiman's kids novel, The Graveyard Book, news has emerged that the project is back on. All is not lost, or maybe it is.We were delighted when it was reported that Henry Selick would be directing a stop-animation film based on the story...The Graveyard Book is a riff on Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. But instead of being raised by jungle animals the boy in Gaiman's book, Nobody Owens, is raised by ghosts in a cemetery after his family is murdered. When the boy is older the killer returns to finish the job. The director of James and the Giant Peach, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Coraline doing another Neil Gaiman story? Oh yes, please. Then the relationship between rights owners, Disney,... |
Posted: 22 Jan 2013 06:00 PM PST A mere click of the mouse is all it takes for you to strike an almost Faustian bargain with one of the mega corporations on the planet. With that click we get access to fantastic email service, genius music players and easy-to-use photo editors. But what do the companies providing us with these seemingly free services get in return? Or, as director Cullen Hoback promptly asks in his film Terms And Conditions May Apply: " What if privacy policies weren't about protecting privacy but about taking it away?" Hoback is a documentarin and investigator in the vein of Michael Moore, putting himself front and center in the film as our fluent narrator and guide through what can often be labyrinthine subject matter. Unlike Moore, Hoback... |
Slamdance 2013 Review: KOHLHAAS Wonderfully Captures The Comedy And Tragedy Of Filmmaking Posted: 22 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST We all have visions that we hold dear, ideas and ideals that we keep close to our hearts, ready to share in that moment when we absolutely must go forth and claim our stake in the world. As German author Henirich von Kleist stated: "A free thinking man is not trapped where Destiny puts him."Aron Lehmann's feature debut is and isn't an adaptation of Kleist's novel Kohlhaas. The best supporting example I can give of this is how Michael Winterbottom's Tristram Shandy: A Cock And Bull Story is and isn't an adaptation of Laurence Stern's 18th century meta novel. While Winterbottom's film is full of snark, focusing on the petty, excessive and narcissistic ailments of the film industry, Lehmann's film, by turn, is a celebration... |
Euro Beat: Berlinale Finally Finishes Unveiling Massive Lineup Posted: 22 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST Most festivals send out one or two line-up announcements at most -- but not Berlinale. Perhaps they are worried that their insanely huge lineup would be too overwhelming in one press release, or perhaps they just get very excited every time six more films are confirmed. Regardless, every other day for the last two months, I've received an announcement of some sort listing a partial program of films for one of their many sections. But now, the entire lineup is finally upon us!And so, rather than leaving you to comb through trade articles of piecemeal data, I present below the entire list of films in the festivals Competition, Forum and Panorama sections. Beyond that, I'm afraid I can't be of much help sorting it all... |
Unemployed Hero In Need Of Work In Taiwanese Tokusatsu Comedy MACHI ACTION Posted: 22 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST What happens when a costumed universal space hero is put out to pasture? Or, rather, the actor portraying him is? That's the basic concept behind Jeff Chang's Taiwanese scifi action comedy Machi Action. A surprise hit in Taiwan - where it just opened in the three spot behind The Grandmaster and Life Of Pi - stars Berlin Chen as the actor thrown out of work when producers decide they need a fresher face to stomp on their weekly galactic monsters. It's the sort of concept you would expect to come out of Japan, if anywhere, but Chang seems to have nailed it and the trailer is a clever, playful and heartfelt bit of work. Check it out below.... |
Review: HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS is Bloody Entertaining Posted: 22 Jan 2013 12:30 PM PST After lampooning Quentin Tarantino and resurrecting Nazi zombies, Norwegian writer-director Tommy Wirkola finally gets to unveil his English language debut. True to form, Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters proves to be a goofy, yet thoroughly entertaining romp that blends the Brothers Grimm with bloody violence to darkly comic effect. We have long been fans of Wirkola's work here at Twitch, who first caught our eye with his Kill Bill-inspired debut Kill Bujlo, before graduating to the international stage with Nazi zombie horror comedy, Dead Snow. Last year, he had a hand in writing the delightfully surreal television series Hellfjord, which screened in its entirety at Fantastic Fest to a rapturous reception, and now he has ascended to the big leagues, with the release of his Hollywood debut,... |
International Teaser For Stephen Chow's JOURNEY TO THE WEST Posted: 22 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST More slapstick insanity ensues in the Taiwanese teaser for Stephen Chow's fantasy comedy Journey to the West: Conquering the Demons. It features new footage of an incompetent demon hunter getting into all kinds of silly situations. This marks the first Stephen Chow-directed film without Chow himself carrying the onscreen comedy, leaving Shu Qi and Bo Wong to fill the spotlight. The theatrical release date is on Chinese New Year (February 7th). You'll find the teaser embedded below.... |
Books to be Scene: Miles Cameron's THE RED KNIGHT Posted: 22 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST The dozen soldiers nearest him looked; every head turned, each wearing matching expressions of fear. The captain rubbed the pointed beard at his chin, shaking off the water."Jacques?" he asked his valet."M'lord?" he asked."How did the Wild make it here?" the captain asked. Here, wealth and power held the Wild at bay. Should have held the wild at bay."The usual way," Jacques said quietly. "Some fool must have invited them in."The captain chuckled. "Well," he said, giving his valet a crooked smile, "I don't suppose they'd call us if they didn't have a problem. And we need the work.""It ripped them apart," Michael said."Apart," Michael repeated, licking his lips. His eyes were elsewhere. "It ate her." Hey, you're back!Indeed I am. Ready to get back to telling... |
Red Band Trailer for Federico Zampaglione's TULPA Posted: 22 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST Audiences at last summer's Film4 FrightFest in London will have no trouble remembering the world premiere of Federico Zampaglione's giallo homage, Tulpa. From the cheesy sex scenes to the poorly dubbed Italian cast, Tulpa proved a highlight of the weekend, albeit for all the wrong reasons. However, it seems to have served as something of a wake-up call. Following the film's disasterous debut, Zampaglione took Tulpa back into the editing room and has reportedly excised 20 minutes out of it. Judging from the film's new red band trailer, he has also re-dubbed the cast, which might go some way to easing the problems of the version we saw back in August. The re-edited version of the film apparently fared far better at Sitges, San Sebastian and... |

TTTT: An American Film Geek's Bottom 10 for 2012 Posted: 22 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST Many a film critic, including at times even the most positive and altruistic of us, take a certain mean delight in unleashing our master lists of the year's biggest stinkers. The temptation to avenge what may be an assault on the mind, a Promethian disappointment, or simply a pointless robbery of one's evening (two hours of life we'll never get back) is certainly understandable. But, it must be said, there's a grain of application to what we're dealing with here. While it is a critic's job to point out what to avoid as much as which art to celebrate, the former aspect can be a dicey one, lest we become the judgmental blowhards we're so often dismissed as. So, with that in mind, I present... |
Sundance 2013 Review: THE EAST is a Decent Studio Pic with No Indie Spark Posted: 22 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST Zal Batmanglij has worked up quite a fan base since his debut feature Sound of My Voice premiered at Sundance in 2011. Though it was initially overshadowed by the big sale buzz of that year's other Brit Marling film Another Earth, a small but vocal crowd vigorously (and justly) beat the drum that Sound of My Voice was the better of the two. While Fox Searchlight scooped up Another Earth at that Sundance, they originally passed on Sound of My Voice, only to circle around and pick it up after the film's positive response at SXSW. Not long after, it was announced that Fox Searchlight would also be producing the next Batmanglij and Marling project, a story not that dissimilar to Sound of My... |
