Slamdance 2013 Review: Atmospheric JUG FACE Is Ultimately Half-Baked Horror Posted: 23 Jan 2013 08:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/jug_face_still-thumb-200x200-36198.jpg) The Deep South can be a very strange place for outsiders. Mired in traditions and rituals which may now seem foolish or outdated, it is still a ripe place to cull old legends anew, projecting them up on the silver screen for a scare or two. The familiar often sensationalized, role that cultish backwoods communities have played for decades in horror films is inverted in Chad Crawford Kinkle's feature debut. Moving away from the usually gruesome antagonistic role they have been known to play against often bright-eyed and bushy-tailed northerners out 'a frolicking, Kinkle instead focuses his sympathies squarely on the tight-nit community itself, and how such a twisted, insular folk can be born.Grim and heavy in atmosphere right off the bat, the opening credits... Slamdance 2013 Exclusive Video: Forest Whitaker Talks Producing & VIPAKA Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:30 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/forest_whitaker_slamdance-thumb-200x200-36418.png) One cool aspect of Slamdace that I have yet to talk about is Slamdance TV, which is a very cool gang of folks -- including Ben Hethcoat, Michael Felker and Eric Ekman -- who run around Park City making videos for the festival. Filmmaker interviews, wacky skits, sledding... you name it, they've probably done their own spin on it. As it so happens one Mr. Forest Whitaker is in town in support of the Slamdance title Vipaka, which he produced. So the lads at "SDTV" got the rare chance to sit down with Whitaker and chat about his producing career. We've got the exclusive video with password intact... which is... forest...Here's a bit more on Vipaka. Below is the link to where can watch the... Sundance 2013 Review: THE WAY, WAY BACK Wants You to Laugh as Hard as You Can. And You Will. Posted: 23 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/000022.17055.TheWayWayBack_still1_LiamJames_SamRockwell__byClaireFolger_2012-12-03_06-58-23PM-thumb-200x200-36396.jpeg) Being the awkward kid is the worst. Making friends is hard; everyone thinks you're one with the freaks, and contact with the opposite sex is pretty much non-existent. Since lack of confidence is always going to be an uphill battle and the Pretenders will not always be around to "...Stand By You," something needs to happen to balance out the suck -- a strange and wonderful friendship, perhaps? If you agree, keep reading, because this is the story of The Way, Way Back: a way charming, way honest, and way, way funny movie about an unlikely friendship.Way, Way opens with Duncan (Liam James) being asked by his mother's boyfriend Trent (Steve Carell) to rate himself from 1-10. At first we think Trent means well and... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/jExVAs1erhw) |
Arrow Video Is Killing Q2! FOXY BROWN, SPIDER BABY, KNIGHT RIDERS, BARON BLOOD, BLACK SABBATH, MOTEL HELL, & Many More! Posted: 23 Jan 2013 02:30 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/foxy-thumb-200x200-36407.jpg) Is there a finer genre home video label in the world than Arrow Video right now? Probably not, and they're only putting distance between themselves and the competition with every new announcement. Today's list of amazing releases is for the second quarter of 2013, from March to July, and it is INSANE. Tons of world Blu-ray premieres, as well as films previously released in other regions with amazing new bonus content, not to mention Arrow Video's usual exceptional packaging and artwork from people like poster legend Graham Humphreys and horror artist Jeff Zornow. This quarter's releases range from classic Eurohorror to Blaxploitation Blu-ray debuts to crazy American exploitation classics to arthouse erotica; in short, everything I love. The highlights for me are the HD debuts of... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/2_TvKRKz4Hg) |
Sundance 2013 Review: IN FEAR Takes a White-Knuckle Ride on a Dark Night Posted: 23 Jan 2013 02:01 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/InFear-thumb-200x200-36404.jpg) New couple Tom and Lucy are on their way to a music festival, to meet up with friends, camp, and explore their new relationship, when things go terribly awry. The film opens with Lucy in the loo of a pub, while unseen to her, a leering eye stares through a peephole. As she and Tom leave to get on the road, Tom explains there was a slight altercation with a local due to a spilled drink, which he smoothed over with a couple of pints and an apology.Ever the romantic, and springing a surprise evening on his new girlfriend, Tom informs Lucy he has booked a room for the night at a lovely out of the way hotel, and that they'll drive to the festival... Gangster Moonlighting As Shaman In Korean Comedy MAN ON THE EDGE Posted: 23 Jan 2013 01:30 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Man_On_The_Edge-poster-thumb-200x200-36405.jpg) Currently smashing up the Korean box office with high grossing success is the gangster comedy Man on the Edge. It seems director Jo Jin-Gyu will continue to tread familiar ground in the Kkangpae - Korean gangster - world, as he has since the hit My Wife Is a Gangster series. As with those previous films, this will feature a mix of action and comedy but with a supernatural twist.Strange things begin to happen to Kwang-ho (Park Shin-Yang), a famous mob in town, after he is stabbed in the hand during a fight. He concludes that the path of a shaman is the only solution to his problems, and juggles his vocation as a mob by night and his new role as a shaman by day. He's... Slamdance 2013 Review: THE DIRTIES Asks The Question 'Can You Laugh With The Boy Holding The Gun?' Posted: 23 Jan 2013 12:15 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/TheDirties-thumb-200x200-36165.jpg) The short answer is, "Yes."The slightly longer answer is "Quite a lot, but with a hell of a caveat."And the long answer is the rest of this review.Looking like the freshest-faced 16-year old you could imagine, Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson crab-walked, moon-walked - or maybe he was doing the robot - onto the internet scene with the out-there, mockdoc web series Nirvana The Band The Show. The Dirties is his first feature, which he also stars in as... Blu-ray Review: Cronenberg's COSMOPOLIS Posted: 23 Jan 2013 12:00 PM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/cosmopolis_blu-thumb-200x200-36399.jpg) For those of us in Toronto, it's easy to take for granted what David Cronenberg's Cinema has meant for the rest of the world. One of the few truly great international filmmakers to come out of English Canada, his films are often challenging, cerebral, and stamped with a sense of the darkly macabre. Of late, the director has seen a slight shift in the tone of his work, and his collaborations with Viggo Mortensen (A History of Violence, Eastern Promises and A Dangerous Method) point to a slightly different direction than some of his earlier, more explicitly horrific films. Cosmopolis serves as another shift in kind, an overtly claustrophobic piece almost entirely set inside a white limousine (the fact that the film premiered alongside the needlessly... Review: THE PIROGUE, A Tragically Familiar Yet Well-Told Tale of a Perilous Sea Voyage Posted: 23 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/The Pirogue-thumb-200x200-36401.jpg) A recurring visual motif in Moussa Touré's affecting and often harrowing sea drama The Pirogue consists of a simple yet quietly commanding camera move: the scanning of faces. These are the faces of 30 men, and one woman stowaway, who have set out on an extremely dangerous voyage from their native Senegal to look for work and better opportunities in Spain. The title of the film describes the vessel in which they are traveling, a brightly colored boat that resembles an oversized canoe, one that is definitely not intended for traveling such a vast distance with so many people on board. The story Touré tells here is undeniably a very familiar one, and one that certainly is not peculiar to Africa. But the power of... Interview With Ray Harryhausen: Master of the Majick's Author Mike Hankin And Publisher Ernest Farino Hails The Coming Of VOLUME ONE! Posted: 23 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/MajicksVol1_FC-thumb-200x200-36406.jpg) The opportunity to interview the author and publisher of the Ray Harryhausen - Master of the Majicks series was not something I took lightly. I've waited nervously for each volume, knowing that in the high stakes world of publishing a lot of different things can derail even the best projects. If completed, this huge three-book set would easily be the most comprehensive look ever offered at Ray Harryhausen and his career and, as they have been published out of sequence, the upcoming Volume One would be the last one. Volumes Two and Three were amazing but are long since sold out and routinely go for prohibitive prices on the secondary market. To miss out on Volume One would be simply unthinkable. Well Ray Harryhausen - Master... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/8zmBDzSqPpU) |

Sundance 2013 Review: TWO MOTHERS Posted: 23 Jan 2013 06:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2013/01/Two Mothers-thumb-200x200-36402.jpg) TWO MOTHERS is director Anne Fontaine's first English language film. Adapted from Doris Lessing's novel, Two Grandmothers, the film adaptation stars Naomi Watts as Lil, Robin Wright as Roz, and Xavier Samuel and James Fencheville as their sons, respectively. Lil and Roz have been best friends since they were little girls. Now grown, but still living next door to each other, their sons have become best friends as well. They are, essentially, one big family. Their homes hug a hillside overlooking a picturesque bay and small beach on the coast of Australia. Here the Greek God like teenagers surf their days away, while their moms observe them fondly from the beach. Everything seems perfect in their lives - that is, until things suddenly unravel... Sundance 2013 Review: UPSTREAM COLOR May Be More Interesting to Discuss Than Watch Posted: 23 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST ![](http://twitchfilm.com/assets_c/2012/12/sundance_upstream_color-thumb-200x200-35367.jpg) Ever since Primer won Sundance's grand jury prize in 2004, indie-watchers have been wondering what its writer-director, Shane Carruth, would do next. Primer was his first movie, you see, and he made it for $7,000. Who is this guy? Where did he come from? What other treasures are stored in his nerd brain? Now, at last, we have answers. Sort of. Carruth's second film is Upstream Color. We know that much for sure. It's a ponderous, ethereal allegory about our interconnectedness with nature (maybe?), and it has as much in common with Primer as a shoe tree does with an apple tree. If Carruth didn't appear onscreen in both films, you'd never know they had any connection to each other. I say that not as... Handsome Bodyguard Protects Handsomer President. The first one to reveal its trailer is Antoine Fuqua's Olympus Has Fallen, a film that takes the old "highly regarded veteran retires after an accident on the job but an even more terrible incident is just the thing to get him back in the saddle" type of story. Handsome but disgraced... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] ![](http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/TwitchEverything/~4/_S332nEXYPs) |
