New Poster And Trailer For Quentin Dupieux's WRONG Posted: 10 Jan 2013 04:30 PM PST Usually when we're promoting a film that we like, such as Quentin Dupieux's Wrong, we usually want to include a quote from our review so you we really, really mean it. But the folks at Drafthouse Films have done the work for us, it seems, and placed a quote from Chase Whale's review right there at the very top of the new poster for the film. Saves me a lot of time and we can move right along to the latest trailer. But first, about the film...Dolph Springer (Reno 911's Jack Plotnick) awakens one morning to find he has lost the sole love of his life - his dog, Paul. Desperate to reunite with his best friend and to set things right, Dolph embarks on a journey which spirals into... |
DOGTOOTH Director Yorgos Lanthimos Travels To The Future With THE LOBSTER Posted: 10 Jan 2013 03:30 PM PST Dogtooth and Alps director Yorgos Lanthimos is taking an even further step into the weird with his first foray into science fiction -- a dystopian tale of the future, entitled The Lobster. Lanthimos' third collaboration with screenwriter Efthymis Filippou will be seeking funding at the International Film Festival Rotterdam's CineMart market later this month. Judging from the below filmmaker's statement and plot synopsis, The Lobster sounds to be just as fantastically subversive as his last three pictures combined. And then some. I mean who wouldn't want to see an animal-morphing, sci-fi love story from Lanthimos? Read on! The Lobster is a story about love, without being a conventional love story. It observes the ways and reasons certain people come together to form couples, while... |
SLAMDANCE 2013: First Images From Paranormal Comedy GHOST TEAM ONE Posted: 10 Jan 2013 02:30 PM PST As they gear up for their premiere at Slamdance on January 20th we have been graced with a selection of stills from the paranormal comedy, Ghost Team One. A trailer will be forthcoming. In order to impress a girl, two roommates set out to make a documentary about a murder that took place in their house decades ago. The girl thinks that the victim's ghost still resides there, and the two guys think that making a movie with her will get them laid. But after setting cameras up around the house, the legitimately supernatural occurrences that follow make it apparent that the ghost is not only real, but that she's a vengeful Vietnamese madame from the 1930's that's become smitten with our guys. I can understand the appeal. For... |
Review: GANGSTER SQUAD Is a Cartoon That Thinks It's Real Posted: 10 Jan 2013 01:00 PM PST If Gangster Squad had been released last September, as originally scheduled, it would have been forgotten by now. There's a good chance it would have been forgotten by October. Instead, after some reshoots to avoid a coincidental resemblance to last July's Aurora movie theater massacre, it takes its rightful place in January, the graveyard of generically cartoony action misfires, never to be spoken of again. Set in 1949 and taking its inspiration (vaguely, one gathers) from a true story, Gangster Squad tells of the Los Angeles Police Department's efforts to bring down notorious criminal Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), a hamburger-faced ex-boxer who's affiliated with the Chicago mafia but has gone rogue in his zeal to control all of L.A. Having secured the support of numerous... |

Slamdance 2013 Interview: The Programmers Talk The Nuts & Bolts Of Festival Building Posted: 10 Jan 2013 11:00 AM PST In preparation for my first visit to Park City, Utah next week I was able to sit down for a conference call with three veteran players of the Slamdance Film Festival. Co-founder Peter Baxter has been heavily involved with the development of the festival since its inception in 1995, while programmers Josh Mandel and Drea Clark first came to Slamdance as filmmakers with films playing in competition. There is your first clue as to what makes Slamdance so unique. Slamdance is truly a festival by filmmakers for filmmakers; one that utilizes a potent blend of anarchy and democracy to create a world class film showcase. And that's just the tip of the iceberg. So sit back, get comfy and let's dig into the story of... |
Danny Boyle Returns To His Darkly Comic Roots In The First Trailer For TRANCE Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:30 AM PST Danny Boyle has come a long way since his feature film debut Shallow Grave. His career has been an eclectic one, but it looks like he might have headed back to those roots again in his new film, Trance, an action-comedy-heist starring James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel.Art dealer McAvoy gets involved with a group of thieves, led by Cassel, who want to pull a heist. McAvoy hides a painting and then gets amnesia, prompting Cassel to hire a hypnotherapist (Rosario Dawson) to get the information out of him.No matter what genre or mode he works in, Boyle is a solid director (to put it mildly,) working his own style in concert with whatever narrative is in his hands. It's nice to see him get back... |
Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:00 AM PST For a lot of people, high school was never fun - the bullies, the pimples, and the god awful cafeteria food. For Carson Phillips (Glee's Chris Colfer, who also wrote the film), high school became the death of him. His dad (Dermot Mulroney) left his mom Sheryl (Allison Janney) for a younger, more attractive woman (Christina Hendricks), which turns Sheryl into a vortex of insanity. His delirious live-at-home grandma yells at him for being a stranger, and everyone at school hates him for his overachieving, pretentious ways. To literally add the final nail to the coffin, he gets struck and killed by lightning when we first meet him. (And you thought you had it bad.) With Carson voicing over, he recaps his childhood up to his senior... |
Today's Nolan News: Christopher In Talks To Direct Brother Jonathan's Script INTERSTELLAR Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:30 AM PST More heady sci-fi filmmaking could be on the horizon for Christopher Nolan, director of those Batman movies, Inception and Memento. He is in talks to produce and direct, Interstellar, based on a script by his brother Jonathan, which in turn is based on a treatment by CalTech gravitational physicist and astrophysicist Kip Thorne. Prior to Jonathan Nolan's scripting involvement, Interstellar began as a treatment written by Thorne and producer Lynda Obst back when Spielberg was attached. According to Thorne, Interstellar concerns what he calls "the warped side of the universe" MovielineThis would mark the fifth time (more or less, Momento was simply based on Jonah's short story) that the brothers' creative juices will be combined to concoct the cinematic equivalent of... of... look, I'm not the creative one here, Chris and Jonathan... |
Sundance 2013: 10 Films to Watch Before The Fest - Best of the Rest Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST The Sundance Film Festival kicks off one week from today and we've got 10 more movies for you to cram in before heading out to Park City. You may have already caught the first two parts of our series where we shined a light on some of the films from directors with films in this year's US and World Dramatic Competitions and various documentary programs. We'll finish things off with past films by directors with films in this year's Premieres, Midnight, Next, Spotlight, and New Frontiers sections. As we mentioned previously, we're including links to each of the films CanIStream. It profiles. This seems to be a good way to quickly find out exactly how you can watch a film, but should not be taken... |
Legendary Stomps GODZILLA Producers Posted: 10 Jan 2013 08:05 AM PST Legendary Pictures, the studio behind the latest attempt at a Godzilla film, has sued producers Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Doug Davison. This just prior to the start of production of the film, which is scheduled for March. Gareth Edwards is set to direct. The gist of the suit is a disagreement between Legendary and the producers: Legendary says the producing team did little to justify being included on the project."Defendants efforts on the project consisted only of introducing a screenwriter to Legendary and contributing notes to a screenplay which Legendary subsequently decided to not utilize," the lawsuit states. "Legendary judged that Defendants offered little to the ongoing production of the film, and that their likely role (if engaged) would not warrant the substantial fees and backend... |
SPRING BREAKERS Is Coming Out ... Wait For It ... This Spring!!! Posted: 10 Jan 2013 07:35 AM PST First of all: Dandy teaser poster for Harmony Korine's Spring Breakers. Equal parts sexy, dangerous and kinky. I have come to understand that this is Vanessa Hudgens under the mask and am also proud that I had to look that up instead of looking at her and recognizing her by her body alone. Point, Andrew. You will also find a more subtle French poster below with the comely quartet of young ladies and surprise, surprise, James Franco with a gun. Our own Ryland Aldrich described the film as so in his TIFF review: "Spring Breakers is pure fantasy. In Korine's fantasy land, young girls (like barely 18 young) wear nothing but tiny bikinis (often less), are always down to get down (even with each other), and are... |
LINCOLN Grabs 12 Academy Award Nominations, Amidst Surprises and Snubs Posted: 10 Jan 2013 07:05 AM PST Steven Spielberg's Lincoln received 12 Academy Award nominations for the 85th Academy Awards, announced this morning. Nine films were nominated for best picture, with the most surprising nod going to Michael Haneke's Amour, which was also nominated (as expected) for best foreign language film. Haneke snared one of the five best director nominations, and Emmanuelle Riva was honored for her work in the best actress category. The other big winner was Silver Linings Playbook, receiving nominations in all four acting categories (Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro, Jacki Weaver), directing and adapted screenplay (David O. Russell), and best picture. Beasts of the Southern Wild also did well, picking up nominations for best picture, best adapted screenplay, best director (Benh Zeitlin), and best actress (Quvenzhané... |
Spielberg's Adaptation Of ROBOPOCALYPSE On Hold Indefinitely Posted: 10 Jan 2013 06:43 AM PST Fans of Daniel H. Wilson's book Robopocalypse and the films of Steven Spielberg will have to wait to see what this collaboration can accomplish on the big screen. Spielberg's adaptation of the robots-run-amok-stomping-on-humans novel has been put on hold indefinitely.Spielberg spokesman Marvin Levy said the project was "too important and the script is not ready, and it's too expensive to produce. It's back to the drawing board to see what is possible."I read Wilson's novel last year and it is a moderately ambitious story with multiple story lines. Some of them would have been great to see play out. The native American tribe that rises up to defend its land. Congresswoman Perez and her search for her daughter. Nomura, the Japanese factory worker who helps start the... |
