Review: MATRU KI BIJLI KA MANDOLA Mixes Politics With Romance And Does Justice To Neither Posted: 12 Jan 2013 03:45 AM PST Each new film from Indian auteur Vishal Bhardwaj comes with a lot of baggage, but that's by design. Bhardwaj is not only responsible for directing some of the most audacious films of the last decade, but he is also, perhaps foremost, one of India's most in-demand composers and writers as well. When the urge strikes him to make his own film, he wears all of these hats at once, making the film's success entirely dependent upon him -- a tall order for anyone. Sometimes this works, as in his universally acclaimed adaptations of Shakespeare's Othello, Omkara, and his MacBeth reworking, Maqbool. Other times, however, he's not so universally loved, as was the case with his last film, 7 Khoon Maaf, which divided critics, though I... |
More News On GODZILLA Comes Stomping In Posted: 11 Jan 2013 07:59 PM PST More news on the upcoming Gareth Edwards (Monsters) directed reboot of Godzilla has come stomping in over the last couple of days.Even with the drama between Legendary Pictures and the producers they are trying to trample like tiny cardboard buildings (Dan Lin, Roy Lee and Doug Davison respectively), wiping them from the forthcoming kaiju epic, the force of nature that is the Godzilla redux still lumbers forward. Now we have fan-favorite and Oscar winner Frank Darabont being brought in to work his magic on the screenplay in a last-minute re-write which I imagine will probably be mostly about dialog, before the proposed April start date for shooting. Anything more would surely push that calendar back, which then again may not be a bad thing either, given... |
Louis C.K. Joining Next David O. Russell Pic? Posted: 11 Jan 2013 06:56 PM PST Well this is certainly compelling news. Stand-up Louis C.K. is currently in talks to star in an upcoming project from David O. Russell (Silver Linings Playbook, The Fighter, I Heart Huckabees). The multi-talented comedian/actor/director/writer/producer joins an already impressive cast:The period drama, which already stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper,Jeremy Renner and Amy Adams, begins production next month.Penned by Eric Singer (The International), the film centers on con artist Mel Weinberg who worked with the FBI in a far-reaching corruption case that stretched from Atlantic City to Washington, D.C. The Louie actor will play an FBI agent. This "far-reaching corruption case" was the Abscam sting operation conducted by the FBI in the 70s and 80s; a number of public officials were arrested for accepting bribes. We will just have to wait and see how much... |
Get Behind The Scenes Of Wong Kar Wai's THE GRANDMASTER Posted: 11 Jan 2013 04:00 PM PST Our very own James Marsh recently gave Wong Kar Wai's The Grandmaster a rave review, stating it "is one hell of a beautiful kung fu movie." It's a quality that certainly holds true, even when browsing through the behind-the-scenes video. The video showcase interviews with the cast & crew and shots of the various gorgeous locations & sets. You'll find the two making-of video embedded below.... |
Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST San Bao (Duan Bowen), the disaffected, down-and-out protagonist of Zhang Yuan's latest and beautifully observed film Beijing Flickers, in an early scene, is desperately chasing after his dog Lucky, "meaning Happiness," who has suddenly run away. It soon becomes clear that the idea that luck and happiness has left San Bao refers to much more than the fact of his canine companion abandoning him. The mean streets of Beijing have not been kind to San Bao: in short order, he loses his dead-end assembly-line job, his girlfriend Chengcheng (Xiao Yuyu) to a rich (and married) man, and will soon be homeless due to his run-down digs being slated for demolition. Making San Bao feel like even more of a loser is his unsuccessful attempt to... |
Beware The Perils Of The Short Pants Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST He's happy. He's friendly. He's a monster. And he's only wearing Half-A-Pantaloon, though very proudly so. The hero of this new short film by Together - a creative duo comprised of Hector Herrerra and Pazit Cahlon - will, however, learn the perils of such behavior.Half-a-Pantaloon is a tongue-in-cheek public service announcement that presents the perils of wearing shorts when trousers are de rigueur. Born out of the unremitting pant-snobbery of its creators, Half-a-Pantaloon warns that even the most talented and charming monsters may suffer the consequences of certain sartorial blunders.Half-a-Pantaloon is the second installment of the Beastly Bards project, Togetherâ•˙s collection of animated silly rhymes. The writing is inspired by the style of poets like Edward Lear and Ogden Nash, and the animation applies a... |

Spielberg's ROBOPOCALYPSE Is Still Happening Posted: 11 Jan 2013 10:53 AM PST Contrary to yesterday's news, it seems like there's still life in the batteries of Steven Spielberg's adaption of the Daniel H. Wilson sci-fi novel Robopocalypse after all. Spielberg issued this statement earlier- "We found that the film was costing a lot of money and I found a better way to tell the story more economically but also much more personally. I found the personal way into Robopocalypse, and so I just told everybody to go find other jobs, I'm starting on a new script and we'll have this movie back on its feet soon... I'm working on it as we speak." Starring Thor and Catwoman, er, I mean Chris Helmsworth and Anne Hathaway, the story of AI intelligence and android revolt is being scripted by... |

Slamdance Embraces Controversy With First Trailer For THE DIRTIES Posted: 11 Jan 2013 09:30 AM PST If there is a more controversial topic right now than schoolyard violence I don't know what it is. And the Slamdance Film Festival is sure to rile some feathers and provoke some conversation with Matt Johnson's debut feature The Dirties. The creator of web series Nirvana The Band The Show, Johnson costars here with Owen Williams as a pair of movie obsessed high schoolers trying to cope with a gang of bullies - who they've dubbed The Dirties. The pair fantasize about revenge in in a film project but when one wants to take it further things get disturbing. The first trailer arrived earlier this week via The Playlist, check it below.... |
Black Magic And Boxing In Indonesian Horror BRIDE WATERFALL: PHUKET Posted: 11 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST Ah, Phuket. One of the prime tourist destinations in all of south east Asia. You want to experience the beauty of Thailand without the madness of Bangkok? Phuket is where you go. And apparently this is true in Indonesia as well as in the rest of the world, but the young stars of Rizal Mantovani's Air Terjun Pengantin Phuket (aka Bride Waterfall: Phuket) find something other than what they expected when they arrived. Yes, there are beautiful beaches to necessitate the wearing of bikinis but there is also rather a lot of black magic.Indonesia's Maxima Pictures produces some of the higher end genre pictures in the region and this one features their typical blend of decently good production value employed in the service of showing... |
Call It STARGATE Meets THE TERMINATOR. Watch Kaleb Lechowski's R'HA Posted: 11 Jan 2013 08:00 AM PST Egyptian gods recast as alien beings doing battle against sentient machines who used to serve their cause? Yes, it sounds like a mash up of elements from its high profile forebears but Kaleb Lechowski's CG animated short film R'ha has certainly got a sense of visual style to it. The complete short film arrived online yesterday and you can take a look below.... |
Joshua Chaplinsky's Favorite Films of 2012 Posted: 11 Jan 2013 07:00 AM PST Another year older and what do you get? Another crop of kick ass movies, that's what. And if the crop is where celluloid images are stored prior to digestion, this column is the gizzard where their contents are broken down and meaning is extracted (usually with the aid of swallowed dirt and rocks) before the waste product is expelled. It may sound gross, but remember: when prepared properly the gizzard is considered quite the delicacy. My list of favorite films from 2012 is populated by a mix of festival and theatrical releases, domestic and international, studio and independent. These are the films I couldn't stop thinking about, whether I wanted to or not. These are the films that stimulated the mind cogs and tugged at... |
