Review: TEXAS CHAINSAW 3D Fails to Pay Tribute -- or Make Any Sense

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 09:01 PM PST

John Lussenhop's Texas Chainsaw 3D opens with what are undeniably its best moments: the film's title credits, juxtaposed over a highlight reel of Tobe Hooper's 1974 original, stunningly post-converted into phenomenal 3D. Nearly 40 years later, Daniel Pearl's gritty photography has never looked so gorgeous, and seeing Marilyn Burns pop off the big screen as a now three-dimensional Gunnar Hansen pursues her through the night is a genuine joy. The footage, even in snippet form, still packs a wallop that's primal, fierce, and unequaled. Aggressively marketing itself as a "direct sequel" to the original masterpiece (and apparently forgetting Hooper made his own "direct sequel" back in '86), Texas Chainsaw picks up minutes after the original wraps up, with a bummed-out Leatherface (newcomer Dan Yeager) returning...

EVIL DEAD Red Band Trailer Certainly Is... Red. Very. Red.

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 06:35 PM PST

I am of two minds when it comes to this 'new vision' of the Evil Dead horror films. There is that part of me that squirms and squiggles at the idea of anyone 'new vision-ing' anything that is perceived as a classic of its respected genre like Sam Raimi's first two Evil Dead films are to horror. No, no, no, no, no, no NO! Stop it. Stop messing with a classic! Then there is that other part of me that says, 'Woo Howdy!' as the red band trailer for Fede Alvarez's Evil Dead unfolds and all the things that we loved about those seminal films is on full and gory display. Copious amounts of blood. A chainsaw. Blood. A hand gone bad. Blood. A rapey forest....

SIGHTSEERS Gets Brilliant Homespun Poster For German Release

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 02:46 PM PST

It's been making the rounds on Twitter for the past day, but the German poster for Ben Wheatley's Sightseers is such a stunning instant-classic poster that I'm highlighting it here to spread it even wider. And to hopefully increase the cacophony of voices wanting this key art to be made available internationally to buy, import and hang on our walls, like, now.I particularly love how the embroidered look is so reminiscent of the classic Fargo poster, and as a comparison for fellow poster and embroidery fans I've included bigger versions of both homespun posters below....

Lord of the Memes: The Soviet Version of THE HOBBIT For Your Viewing Pleasure

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 11:30 AM PST

The Internet is occasionally a remarkable place, a wonderland where people can plop up things that you simply wouldn't have believed to have existed. Some intrepid YouTubers have put onto the video sharing service the 1985 Soviet film Хоббит, or The Hobbit, complete with crappy sets, spangly wizards, and a slew of Dwarves that come over for a dinner party. While a paltry 70 minutes, this is still a pretty fascinating look at the retelling of the classic tale from an entirely different vantage point. While the task of subtitling goes on in earnest for the real video, some entrepreneurs have taken to doing the Downfall thing, which frankly might be the better way to view the film. If you'd rather, you can click here to...

Exclusive: First Trailer for BLACK METAL, Set to Rage at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 09:30 AM PST

I admire filmmaker Kat Candler's affinity for chaos. Last year at Sundance, she brought her short film Hellion (currently being written into a feature film), about a rambunctious group of boys. This year, she's bringing more anarchy to Park City with her new short, Black Metal. I haven't seen the the film yet, but here's the fascinating synopsis: Black Metal follows a death metal frontman (Jonny Mars) dealing with the guilt of a teen who murders his teacher in the name of their band. Vicious. This story is already great for two reasons: 1) the media doesn't really share much insight from an artist, film, or celebrity being blamed for the cause of a school shooting or massacre - they just point fingers, and 2) die hard fans...

Exclusive Interview: Talking FRANKENWEENIE With Producer Allison Abbate

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 09:00 AM PST

Allison Abbate has a pretty astonishing track record in animation, having played significant roles in Tim Burton productions dating back to Nightmare Before Christmas, while also producing such masterpieces as Iron Giant and Fantastic Mr. Fox. Her latest project is Frankenweenie, the darkly comic stop-motion film that comes out on Blu-ray next week. The project was born out of a live action short that Burton first made for Buena Vista back in the mid-80s, and the feature length animated version does a much better job at telling the story in an engaging way, and is even more representative of the "Burtonian" aesthetic that's now a trademark from many of his films. We began by discussing the transition from a live action film to expand the...
