FEAR & LOATHING @ SUNDANCE PART 4: Boozie Movies Gets In Too Deep

CHAPTER 7: YOGA PANTSI'm standing outside of a small floral boutique that has been temporarily remodeled into a gifting suite.  I'm chain smoking Newport 100s and getting plenty of ugly looks from the V.I.P. fest goers coming and going through the shop's doors. I watch the constant parade of hot women with perfectly styled hair, perfectly pedicured nails, perfectly sculpted bodies, perfectly conditioned skin, and their perfectly formed asses strut their way in and out of the revolving door entrance. I've been told they're called swag hags around these parts. They're not here for the films; they're here for the free goods. Most of them already have two to five designer shopping bags dangling from their wrists; Versace, Paul Frank, Sony, Calvin Klein, Motorola,. They...

STAR WARS Ruminations: Post-Postquels Confirmed, Top 10 Characters For Solo Movies

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 03:00 PM PST

Since last we checked in on all things Star Wars-ian, we've had a couple more confirmations about what had been rumoured since the deal initially went through, and some more details about the J.J.-as-director madness. When asked back in December, Abrams was explicit that he wasn't going to work on the project. This doesn't seem to be some kind of ruse or subterfuge; according to The Hollywood Reporter, it took significant convincing by Kathleen Kennedy to turn him around and accept the reins. As THR reported,Kennedy, Abrams and the writers met secretly for about three hours Dec. 19, and "J.J. was just on the ceiling when I walked out the door," she recalls. But still, she says, Abrams had "very genuine concerns" about his obligations elsewhere...

First Five Movies: Director Tony Scott, From THE HUNGER To DAYS OF THUNDER

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 02:00 PM PST

Isn't war sexy and cool? From a thematic standpoint, Top Gun is repellant, yet it's filmed with undeniable style and gusto by Tony Scott. And now the greatest music video of the 80s is returning to North American IMAX theaters on February 8 in a 3D version, in advance of its release on Blu-ray next week. Released in May 1986, Top Gun was the top-grossing performer at the box office that year, and certified 24-year-old Tom Cruise as a genuine movie star. For Scott, who passed away last year under tragic circumstances, it positioned him to make more big-budget Hollywood products, which often appeared to target the lowest common denominator. Appearances can be deceiving, however, and while Top Gun and Days of Thunder poisoned the...

SXSW 2013: YOU'RE NEXT, THE RAMBLER, & (Renamed) V/H/S/2 Lead Midnight and Shorts Announcements

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 01:00 PM PST

It's been a bit of a wait, but Adam Wingard's home invasion hoedown You're Next (our review) is finally being resuscitated. Although it was purchased after TIFF 2011, the film got caught in Lionsgate-Summit merger purgatory. It's now dated for August 2013, but the exciting news is that the film will make its triumphant return to the public eye with a midnight slot at SXSW 2013. Joining it will V/H/S/2 (somewhat disappointingly renamed from the clever S-VHS that premiered a few weeks ago at Sundance - our review), the world premiere of Vincenzo Natali's Splice follow-up, Haunter, and the reteaming of Pat Healy and Sara Paxton in E.L. Katz's Cheap Thrills. The Sundance premiering The Rambler (our review) and TIFF premiering Lords of Salem (our review) also...

Erotic Sci-Fi Drama VANISHING WAVES Prepares To Invade America

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 12:00 PM PST

After a successful run on the festival circuit, Vanishing Waves is making its way to America. Our own Brian Clark described it as "an exquisite sci-fi head trip in the vein of Solaris and 2001: A Space Odyssey, one which takes pleasure in ideas and exploration rather than cheap thrills. As a bonus, it's also sexier than either of those movies. Rather than taking viewers to the outer limits, Lithuanian writer/director Kristina Buožytė is concerned solely with the depths of the human mind, and all the confusion, joy, sex and pain competing for space within." As to the plot, here's the official synopsis from U.S. distributor Artsploitation Films: Lukas (Marius Jampolskis) is assisting a scientific research team by functioning as a patient in a series...

Super Bowl Commercials Go Hollywood

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 09:01 AM PST

I'm glad everyone had a good time, really I am. Another Super Bowl has come and gone. Baltimore is happy, San Francisco is hurting, the Superdome is recovering, and we're all a bit fatter. The Super Bowl is the most watched television event each year, and with thirty seconds of ad time selling for $3.8 million, you better believe the NFL & TV network powers-that-be understand every cent of what that means. Not to rain on a perfectly good power-outage addled pro sports mega-event, but it must be pointed out that in this day and age, what was once just a game has become the apex of hollow consumption in our culture. A mass media event with its high gloss tentacles in every facet of...

Kickstart This! Sci-Fi Short ELLIPSE Will Span Centuries, Spread Inspiration

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 08:31 AM PST

Sci-Fi London, the venerable British film festival devoted to all things fantastic and, er, science fictional, is making its very first short film. And they need your (modest) financial support to get 'er done. Titled Ellipse, it's to be directed by Illana Rein, who previously made the documentary We Are All Cylons. Sci-Fi London founder and festival director Louis Savy is serving as producer. The film Is being made in collaboration with the Royal Observatory Greenwich, home of the the Prime Meridian. The premise certainly sounds intriguing: Leo is from another world, many light years from Earth. He is a player in an intergalactic game, travelling to other worlds and planting the seed of knowledge about whether we are alone in the universe. On Earth...

First Poster For SNOWPIERCER Rolls In

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 08:00 AM PST

Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer has just revealed its first poster, which offers a teasing glance of the highly-anticipated pic. The film focuses on a train that never stops, as it makes its way through a futuristic world that is in the midst of an ice age. The perpetually moving habitat is sub-divided into class and those at the very back are getting ready to revolt. Following a recent image of Song Kang-ho as one of those poor passengers, now we've been given a glimpse of a wagon-full of bedraggled passengers. An old man who seems to be John Hurt stands above them, staring at us with a tired gaze. The film, which stars Chris Evans, Tilda Swinton, Jamie Bell, Octavia Spencer, and Ewen Bremner, as well as the aforementioned...

Talking EXODUS And GAME OF THRONES With Kristofer Hivju

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 07:00 AM PST

While you may not immediately recognize Kristofer Hivju's name just yet the smart money says you will very, very soon. The Norwegian actor is the latest in the current wave of Nordic talent to make a splash abroad. He first crossed the desk here at Twitch thanks to his role in Patrik Syversen's Manhunt (Rovdyr) but it was a major role in the remake of The Thing that most will recognize him from. And up next? On the big screen he plays opposite Will Smith in M. Night Shyamalan's After Earth. And on the small screen? Oh, just a little show called Game Of Thrones, on which he'll be playing wildling chieftain Tormund Giantsbane. But none of this is why we're actually talking to him.Hivju is...

Anime Review: HAKKENDEN: EIGHT DOGS OF THE EAST, Episodes 1-4

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 06:00 AM PST

Run for your lives! It's another reboot on the loose! Someone's taken one of the best animated shows of the nineties and turned it from a stunningly drawn, bloodsoaked chanbara fantasy into a goddamn airbrushed period sitcom with Beautiful Men waving their swords everywhere! Is nothing sacred? Hakkenden: Eight Dogs of the East is the latest attempt to tweak the venerable epic novel Nansō Satomi Hakkenden into something with a newer, sexier brand identity today's fangirls will find easier to cuddle up to, and oh God oh God oh God why can't they just leave my favourite things alone? The original Hakkenden is a monumental set of 108 volumes (yes, you read that right) written in the early nineteenth century, telling the story of eight half-brothers...

IFFR 2013 Review: OH BOY Meanders Pleasantly Through A Beautiful Berlin

Posted: 06 Feb 2013 05:00 AM PST

(But will the sequel be called Oh Man?) There is no shortage of debut films at the International Film Festival Rotterdam. Beginning filmmakers are encouraged through the Hivos Tiger Awards, and the festival section "Bright Future" strives to bring forward upcoming talent. One film in this year's "Bright Future" section is Jan Ole Gerster's drama-comedy Oh Boy, and indeed there are a few talents involved here who show that they're worthy of following. Despite being set in Rotterdam's festival-arch-enemy Berlin, Oh Boy quickly earned itself some serious buzz here. So what's it about? Read on! The Story: Niko is a 27-year-old college drop-out who spends his days slacking in Berlin, living on an allowance from his parents, who think he still studies. And life is...
