Want to know how they construct the elaborate fight sequences in The Raid movies? Well, with The Raid 2 hitting screens in the US and other parts of the world March 28th a lengthy, ten minute long, behind the scenes featurette has just arrived online featuring a very detailed look at how director Gareth Huw Evans, star / choreogaphers Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian, the Hong Kong based vehicle stunt team led by Bruce Law and others approached the work on the film.He thought it was over. After fighting his way out of a building filled with gangsters and madmen - a fight that left the bodies of police and gangsters alike piled in the halls - rookie Jakarta cop Rama thought it was done...

SXSW 2014 Review: SEQUOIA Rises High

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 03:30 PM PDT

Suicide can be a pretty tough subject to tackle in film. Nine times out of ten, a "will they/won't they" drama suffers from the major flaw of deflated stakes as the audience is smart enough to figure out the filmmaker isn't very likely to kill his or her protagonist. So it is actually rather refreshing when Sequoia's protagonist Riley (Aly Michalka) swallows a lethal cocktail of prescription pills in the film's first act. Yep. She's going to go through with it. The drugs are going to take some eight hours to take effect, giving Riley the time to say goodbye to her sister at their predetermined farewell spot in Sequoia National Park. That is, until her sister calls to let her know she wrecked...

Dark New Zealand Comedy HOUSEBOUND Visits The Loo In First Clip

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 02:07 PM PDT

Though I'm not at SXSW myself there are a small handful of titles that I'm particularly eager to see reactions from the fest going crowd on and topping that list is Gerard Johnstone's dark Kiwi comedy Housebound.Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam -- a well-intentioned blabbermouth who's convinced that the house is haunted. Kylie dismisses Miriam's superstitions as nothing more than a distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables & small town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers & strange bumps in the night, she...

Trailer: Highly Anticipated Polish Blockbuster WARSAW 44

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 12:30 PM PDT

Warsaw Uprising was one of the most crucial World War II operations by the Polish resistance Home Army. It was a desperate attempt at liberating Warsaw from the Nazi occupation, and one that was doomed from the start. Though after only 63 days of uneven battle the German army won, this courageous military effort proved that citizens of Poland weren't afraid to stand up up against evil forces, even under enormously unfavorable circumstances. It's not really a surprise that one of the most highly anticipated Polish blockbusters centers around one of the most important events in the country's history. The fact that there's no shortage of war dramas in Polish cinema is as indisputable as it is somewhat irritating. Paying homage to the great heroes who...

Kneaded With Terror: GULYABANI And The Identity Of Horror Within Turkish Cinema

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 12:00 PM PDT

Orçun Benli is one of the young directors working within Turkey who has chosen to venture into horror -creating a unique film which instead of the Islamic horror which most of the genre within the country has been steadily mining turns its gaze to a classic figure within Turkish myth and literature, the Gulyabani, with the trailer for the film going live last week. The Gulyabani is a form of demon primarily depicted as a long-bearded giant with a walking stick who terrorizes travelers and those on the road, though different accounts also have the creature describes as a woman or  one whose entire body is covered in hairs and giving off an horrific smell. This figure has been covered within Turkish literature by author Resat Nuri...

Do You Think I'm Pretty? New Clip from Jonathan Glazer's UNDER THE SKIN

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 11:30 AM PDT

Here is a chance to watch Scarlett Johansson's otherworldly 'girl of the night' ply her trade on a handsome, but unsuspecting, Scottish lad in Under the Skin. The minute long clip gives you the meat of Jonathan Glazer's unusual science fiction horror head-scratcher. It also gives a taste of its off-kilter documentary-ish tone whilst leaving to the imagination the film's more innovative and strange elements (that is to say, it is spoiler-free) that make it well-worth catching in the cinema. Yes, yes you should.Under The Skin opens in the UK on March 14th before Canada/USA on April 4th....

A Lesson In Marketing: Compare The New US And International Trailers For Indie Fight Drama TAPPED

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 11:00 AM PDT

Watching how films are presented differently around the world is always an interesting exercise, particularly when it comes to the independent world where there is less established star power in play to provide the marketing hooks. And we have a current case study of that with Allan Ungar's indie fight drama Tapped. Sporting a case liberally sprinkled with MMA stars alongside character actor veteran Michael Biehn, the film really belongs to Cody Hackman who takes the lead as a young man training up to confront the man he witnessed kill his parents when he was young. The film releases in the US via Lionsgate Home Entertainment on May 17th under the title Tapped Out with international theatrical releases - May 16th in Brazil, for instance -...

SXSW 2014 Review: HOME, Quiet Horror With A Touch Of The Creepy Crazy

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 10:30 AM PDT

A teenage girl in love with a teenage boy plays a cryptic game. A twenty-something woman goes about her rounds as a real estate agent in a depressed market, then visits her younger sister, a depressed artist. These three women play key roles in Home, a quiet horror film with a welcome touch of the creepy crazies. Writer/director Nicholas McCarthy, who made his directorial debut with The Pact, is still not interested in holding hands with the audience, as far as creating signposts to make it easy to follow the narrative initially. Whereas his earliest effort held little tension or suspense for me when I saw it in 2012, however, he paints with a larger palette in Home, with more well-placed jolts, to greater variety...

THE STAG: Watch A Pair Of Clips From The Hilarious Irish Comedy

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 10:00 AM PDT

John Butler's hilarious Irish comedy The Stag hits UK screens this coming Friday and a pair of clips have just been released for your viewing pleasure. And they are very pleasurable, indeed. Self-confessed metrosexual Fionan (Hugh O'Conor) doesn't want a Stag Do, but would happily attend the Hen. His concerned bride-to-be Ruth (Amy Huberman) persuades the marginally more macho best man Davin (Andrew Scott) to organise one. Reluctantly he agrees, while doing everything he can to stop Ruth's infamously alpha male brother, known only as 'The Machine' (Peter McDonald), gatecrashing their sober, walking-weekend, excuse for a Stag Party. Not so easily foxed, 'The Machine' tracks them down, sparking to life a wild few days in rural Ireland where the Stags find themselves lost, shot at,...

Crowdfund This! Singapore Needs RUBBERS!

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 09:00 AM PDT

Singapore has a very carefully molded public image one so buffed and polished that it's very unlikely that when you think 'Singapore' you also think 'sex'. Veteran director Yes Kwang (18 Grams Of Love) would like to change that. Kwang is now in post on his sex comedy Rubbers and is looking to crowd fund the remaining money needed to complete the film.Rubbers is a sex comedy that comprises of three stories that involve condoms in the pursuit of love, desire and reconciliation. In the segment 'Balloons', Ah Niu recalls how he tricked his wife into blowing lots of condoms by telling her they were balloons; in 'The Plumber', Baoling decides to seduce a plumber by hiding lots of condoms around her house; and in 'Nightmare',...

Yubari 2014 Review: GUN WOMAN Is Bloody, Trashy Entertainment

Posted: 10 Mar 2014 06:00 AM PDT

Capitalising on a spirited central performance from Japanese actress Asami as the eponymous heroine, Mitsutake Kurando's blood-soaked US-based crime thriller rises above its budgetary limitations in suitably sleazy style.Killing time on a long drive through the desert, a pair of hired guns recount an infamous story of revenge involving the lunatic son of a notorious Japanese mobster. When the elderly Hamazaki dies, his son (Noriaki R. Kamata) lashes out by raping and murdering the wife of his father's doctor. Driven made with revenge, the surgeon (Narita Kairi), now dubbed "Mastermind", acquires a mute Japanese meth addict (Asami) and grooms her to become his instrument of vengeance.Gun Woman, directed and co-written by Mitsutake Kurando (Samurai Avenger: The Blind Wolf) had its world premiere last week at...
