Full Disclosure: Twitch's Lists of Shame - March (Part 1)

It is confession time once again, and this month is a special Easter edition of Full Disclosure. In our monthly efforts to catch up with revered classics and widely-considered must-sees that have thus far passed us by, not only are we admitting our own fallibility as mere mortal cinephiles, but more importantly resurrecting a number of cinematic masterpieces for renewed debate and scrutiny.Seven Samurai (dir. Kurosawa Akira, 1954 Japan)Winner of the Silver Lion, Venice Film Festival, nominated for 2 Academy AwardsTodd Brown, Founder & Editor:The remarkable thing about Kurosawa's Seven Samurai is not that it breaks ground or does anything particularly new. No, by this point we've all seen this basic story structure - a downtrodden village enlists the help of rogue warriors to protect...

Review: The Stylish YOUR TIME IS UP Rings Hollow

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 09:00 PM PDT

I discussed the Korean Academy of Film Arts (KAFA), or more precisely their graduation feature projects, for my recent piece on When Winter Screams, a film I enjoyed with some reservations. Now it's time to take a look at the other major 2012 KAFA production. Your Time Is Up has had a more successful festival run so far, largely because it was programmed alongside Lee Don-ku's excellent Fatal during last October's Busan International Film Festival in the New Currents section. Due to the exposure afforded by that selection, this KAFA project found itself competing with Jang Kun-jae's Sleepless Night and about a dozen other films during this month's Fribourg International Film Festival. A young man lives with his older working brother. He borrows a tidy...

Always a maverick, Japanese director Sono Sion has found a new way to mess with the system. Word is out that Sono is set to direct a live action adaptation of Inoue Santa's manga Tokyo Tribes but rather than go the conventional route and cast the futuristic street gang flick with conventional actors and agencies its creators are taking it straight to the masses and conducting their casting via open auditions on YouTube. Review: THE HOST Makes Me Hate Cinema

Posted: 30 Mar 2013 01:30 PM PDT

It's rare that I see a film as patently awful as The Host. I mean, sure, I've stomached the likes of Identity Thief in the last few months, but this latest "film" from the "mind" of Twilight "author" Stephanie Meyer may well go down in history as one of the worst things ever screened to an audience. The story involves Alien squiggly bits that after an interstellar journey get implanted into the necks of the human race, resulting in glowing eyes and a fascination with chroming (i.e., covered in shiny metal) vehicles. A ragtag band of humans with a proclivity of making out during a rainstorm, yet still being chaste enough to avoid hitting to the proverbial first base, are shown in a kind of existential battle....
