GRACE Director Paul Solet Returns With GOING DOWN

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 04:00 AM PDT

It's been a while since we last heard from Paul Solet, director of the critically lauded indie horror Grace. While he's had some acting parts since then on the directing front we haven't seen Solet at work since Grace, actually, a gap of a little over three years. Which is a shame, and a fact that Solet has rectified with a new short titled Going Down directed for Black Box TV with Marc Senter (Red White And Blue, Brawler) and Dinora Alexander.Gunther Cleary has his whole day mapped out, but a simple elevator ride shows him that life doesn't always go as planned.Take a look at the short below!...

Dallas IFF 2013 Review: SANITARIUM Is So Bad It Doesn't Deserve A Clever Headline

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 03:00 AM PDT

We're told over and over again as children that if we can't say something nice, that we shouldn't say anything at all. Thankfully the realm of film criticism is immune from this rule. If I were forced to review Sanitarium without saying unkind words, this would be very short. As it stands, I'm struggling to remember anything at all that I enjoyed about this ponderously paced abortion. Frankly, in a world which has produced dozens of horror anthologies over the last decade of wildly varying levels of quality, Sanitarium sits firmly at the bottom of the pile, and that's saying something. The first face to which we are treated is that of Malcolm McDowell, which is surely no coincidence. McDowell is a notorious check-casher whose career...

BAKEMONOGATARI Hits DVD In Australia

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 02:00 AM PDT

The Bakemonogatari anime series has been a fan favorite ever since its release in Japan a few years ago. In 2010, our correspondent Matthew Lee had the following conclusion in his review: Ultimately, for such an utter fantasy Bakemonogatari feels strikingly human. The self-indulgence is undeniably part of the appeal - the show is hugely entertaining and frequently very funny - but for all it can be wickedly crass it also displays subtlety and a kind of grace lacking from far too many mainstream productions... For any anime fan after something playful or experimental - a portmanteau of witty short stories, beautifully drawn and scripted with genuine heart - Bakemonogatari comes hugely recommended. At the time of Matthew's review, the anime was only available on non-English friendly...

General Zod Demands that Earth Hands Over the MAN OF STEEL!

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 12:00 AM PDT

For a very long time we heard next to nothing from Warner Bros. about their forthcoming Superman movie, Man of Steel. However, in the last few months the floodgates have opened, and we have been inundated with trailers, posters and all kinds of other appetite whetters. And the great news is that so far, everything about Zack Snyder's big screen outing for the DC Comics superhero has looked incredibly cool (although didn't everyone say the same about Sucker Punch?). Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe all look and sound perfect in everything we have seen up to this point. The latest tidbit is this viral video from General Zod himself, played by Michael Shannon, in which he invades our airwaves to lay down...

Jennifer Lawrence Must Die in THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE Trailer

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 11:34 PM PDT

Director Francis Lawrence is keeping tensions and stakes high in the second installment of Lionsgate's big screen adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novels. Jennifer Lawrence reprises her role as Katnis Everdeen, hero of Sector 12 and winner of the brutal bloodsport, The Hunger Games, that supposedly keeps the post-apocalyptic country at bay. Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth also return as the two dreamy boys vying for her affections, while Donald Sutherland and new addition Philip Seymour Hoffman scheme to destroy the plucky young lady before her victory rallies the nation into a full-scale rebellion.Personally I was a big fan of the first film and am very much looking forward to the rest of the series. It amuses me that the most audible critics cite this as...

Review: Korean Indie KOALA Oozes Charm

Posted: 14 Apr 2013 07:00 PM PDT

Simplicity is in rare supply in Korean cinema these days, so when a film like Koala comes along, it does so as a breath of fresh air. Nary an overwrought emotion, sad backstory nor superfluous tangent can be seen here. Instead, this refreshing new indie is straightforward and endearing as it leaves us to ponder the all too recognizable fates of its young and affable protagonists. Two young men, one small and plain, the other tall and handsome, meet in acting class one day and quickly form a strong bond over frequent drinking sessions. Nine years later, we find the first working in a thankless office job and the other struggling through sporadic commercial work without ever getting his big break. One day they decide...
