Review: DOCTOR WHO S7E09, COLD WAR (Or, An Ice Warrior Causes Havoc In A Sinking Russian Submarine)

While last week's episode devoted some of its focus to having Clara witness the scale of the danger that she'll face as the Doctor's companion, "Cold War" is more about the immediacy of the danger. This is the first episode that really puts her face to face with a deadly alien and it's also the first instance of her seeing death (off-screen, of course, but apparently horrific). It's also a straightforward standalone adventure that delivers in all the right areas simply by putting a bunch of characters, including a fearsome Ice Warrior, in a submarine and just letting them play off one another.Opening in a Soviet submarine in 1983, the episode quickly introduces Captain Zhukov (played by Ser Davos Seaworth himself, Liam Cunningham) as he and...

Dallas IFF Review: THE FUTURE Elevates Beyond Exploitation Into Something Nearly Profound

Posted: 13 Apr 2013 03:00 PM PDT

There's a way to be grossly exploitative and then there's The Future, an Italian film that has a heaping amount of female nudity and yet never feels grotesque. That it is one actresses' frame on display over and over helps to give the film a sense of ease. We witness youth's exploration of sexuality and the way that can be used as casually as a handshake or lead to so much more. Sex is a gateway: to adult hood; to a relationship; to knowledge; to money; to power; to the harsh realities of life. There aren't so much profound life lessons within as there are an opening up of the discussion for these ideas. As good as it gets, The Future is hampered with...

Gang Fights Continue At Suzuran High In CROWS EXPLODE's First Trailer

Posted: 13 Apr 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Crows Zero and Crows Zero 2 are two of Japanese director Miike Takashi's most popular films. These high school gangster flicks are violent, entertaining and filled with energy and intensity. With the box office success of both films, it comes as no surprise that a third film is being made. The new film in the franchise, titled Crows Explode, is to be directed by Toyoda Toshiaki (Pornostar, Blue Spring, Nine Souls). The film will be set one month after the first 2 films' main character, Takaya Genji (played by Oguri Shun), has graduated, and will feature an almost entirely new cast including Higashide Masahiro and Saotome Taichi.Crows Explode's first trailer shows plenty of high school gang fights, just as you would expect in a Crows film....

Things Get Bloody In Red Band Trailer For Kitamura's NO ONE LIVES

Posted: 13 Apr 2013 09:00 AM PDT

While I would never be particularly inclined to call Kitamura Ryuhei's No One Lives a particularly good film - and you can read my detailed thoughts here - it is not without its particular charms. And those charms mostly revolve around a series of elaborate and incredibly violent kill scenes. And the powers that be clearly know this and have cut their red band trailer for the film to emphasize exactly that.A ruthless criminal gang takes a young couple hostage and goes to ground in an abandoned house in the middle of nowhere. When the captive girl is killed, the tables are unexpectedly turned. The gang finds themselves outsmarted by an urbane and seasoned killer determined to ensure that no one lives. It's ridiculous stuff,...
