Cannes 2013 Review: Anurag Kashyap's UGLY Is a Riveting Thriller About Awful Things

Posted: 17 May 2013 08:00 PM PDT

Anurag Kashyap's follow-up to the widely admired Gangs of Wasseypur announces itself with a cacophony of discordant noise screeching over an attempted suicide. It's almost as if Kashyup decided to warn viewers up front, this one won't be easy. And, in many ways, it's not. Here is a thriller about an awful event (a child kidnapping), populated exclusively with awful people, almost all of whom reveal themselves to be more awful than originally thought, which ultimately reaches a conclusion more awful than everything that came before. Sounds like fun, right? Surprisingly though, and to Kashyap's credit, it is. Maybe "fun" is too strong of a word, but this Fargo-meets-Mumbai-police-procedural is compulsively watchable, thrilling, darkly funny and extremely well-directed -- about as close to a good...

Cannes 2013: Weinsteins Trot Out Lineup, Slightly Less Exciting Than Last Year

Posted: 17 May 2013 06:24 PM PDT

Harvey Weinstein said it himself at this year's Weinstein Company Cannes showcase, "2012 was a year as good as any year we had at Miramax." The three films highlighted at last year's event (Django Unchained, Silver Linings Playbook, and The Master) went on to snag 16 Oscar nominations. This year's crop of films... well let's just say they have some work to do to live up to their older siblings. The only film that received an audible reaction from the crowd was the cut scene shown from Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives. The nearly five-minute scene featured Kristin Scott Thomas grilling her son's new girlfriend with the kind of language that would make a sailor blush. Gosling's character sat there taking it all...

Cannes 2013: Quinzaine Organizers Denounce Iranian Filmmaker

Posted: 17 May 2013 02:30 PM PDT

A bit of controversy over at the Directors' Fortnight sidebar (or Quinzaine des réalisateurs) yesterday when Iranian director Alireza Khatami made some pretty scathing remarks for the stage about the Taiwanese film Taipei Factory. As filmbiz.asia reports: Khatami said that he had been a victim of racism during the shoot in Taiwan. He denounced the film project as a political pawn in the re-election campaign of Taipei City's mayor. And he added that he was ashamed that he hadn't chosen to leave the project earlier. The omnibus consists of four short films directed by four teams of directors, pairing a local director with a foreign counterpart. Khatami was partnered with Taiwan's CHANG Jung-chi, director of festival-favourite Touch of the Light, a celebrated drama about a blind...

Cannes 2013: Why Would Someone Want To Blow Up Christoph Waltz?

Posted: 17 May 2013 02:17 PM PDT

A live broadcast of Canal Plus show Le Grand Journal - broadcasting from the Martinez beach during Cannes - was interrupted today when two blanks were fired into the air by a man holding what appeared to be a grenade in his hand. A pair of Cannes jurors - Daniel Auteuil and Christoph Waltz - were being interviewed at the time and were rushed off stage. There were no injuries but between this and yesterday's jewel theft that netted roughly a million dollars worth of jewelry meant to be lent to stars walking the red carpet this year's festival is proving to be rather eventful. Oh, right, there's the whole Ghadafi prostitution ring thing, too. Welcome to France.Check out video of the incident below....

Calvin Lee Reeder's THE RAMBLER Has A New Trailer & Theatrical Dates!

Posted: 17 May 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Fresh from destroying the minds of festival goers in the US and abroad, Calvin Lee Reeder's latest mind-melter, The Rambler, is now preparing for a limited theatrical run. Who would've thunk? The film is not only non-linear, it is anti-linear, taking to task the dogma of logic and slavishness to reality in a way that will repulse and engage in equal measure. We're happy to have the latest trailer for the film as well as the first theatrical dates for The Rambler, beginning on June 7th in advance of its home video/VOD debut on June 25th. I absolutely love Reeder's work and definitely would like to see the film again, so I'm happy that Dallas is back on the schedule. If you are in one of these...

Shudder With The First Teaser For Danish Horror POSTPARTUM

Posted: 17 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Ah, children. We're supposed to love 'em all the time but if we're honest the process of making them is kind of icky, kind of sticky while having them is even moreso, smells bad, and - if I may dare a very bad pun - has a tendency to leave parents leaving rather hollow after such a long build up.Enter Danish director Michael Panduro and his debut feature, Postpartum.Postpartum is a feature length tale of having children - and all the bodily horrors that come with it. It's a psychological, slightly surreal and very gory horror-film, that plays on the idea of children as parasites and explores themes not normally seen in Danish cinema. Think Cronenberg's The Brood mixed with Von Trier's Antichrist and you're...

Posted: 17 May 2013 08:40 AM PDT

After Sam Mendes ruled himself out of directing a second James Bond film after the phenomenal success of last year's Skyfall, speculation has been rife about who will take on the super spy franchise for its 24th official outing. Christopher Nolan is a name that has been bandied about many times, but The Daily Mail is now claiming that he has been aprrochaed by the film's producers. While the actual source of the news is unclear, the British newspaper seems pretty sure that early talks have commenced between Nolan's people and Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson. Nolan is currently in pre-production on Interstellar, a sci-fi epic exploring gravity fields and wormholes starring Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway and Jessica Chastain. That will keep his...
