Review: HANNIBAL S1E08, FROMAGE (Or, Everyone's Getting Friend-Zoned And Are None Too Pleased About It)

Posted: 17 May 2013 12:00 AM PDT

This week's gruesome discovery is the body of an orchestra member left at center stage. His throat and neck have been cut open, the neck of a cello has been stuffed into his mouth, and his vocal chords have been treated in a specific traditional way that catgut strings were treated for musical instruments. Treated in such a way that they could be played to create some sort of musical harmony. It is no secret that Franklin's friend Tobias, whom we met last episode, is killing and making strings for musical instruments with his victims intestines. There is a lovely and melodic montage before the title sequence that tells us this; we get to watch Tobias pull the intestines from one of his victims and create...

Cannes 2013: First Clip From Jim Mickle's WE ARE WHAT WE ARE Quietly Teases

Posted: 16 May 2013 05:30 PM PDT

"I wish we were like everyone else." Ah, what young girl hasn't said that to her older sister at one time or another? But the family at the bloody heart of Jim Mickle's We Are What We Are really is different, and they'll never be like everyone else. Because they're cannibals. Maybe. Mickle's "reimagining" of Jorge Michel Grau's Somos Lo Que Hay bowed at Sundance this year, and our own Sean Smithson observed: Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: We Are What We Are is not a remake. Differing greatly from the original Jorge Michel Grau Spanish language version, the creative team of Jim Mickle (writer/director) and Nick Damici (writer/co-star) have taken the original concept of ritual cannibalism and inverted...

Cannes 2013 Review: Ozon's YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL Finds New Problems With Sexual Awakenings

Posted: 16 May 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Just when it seemed that every single movie about teen girls coming to terms with their sexuality had already been made, here comes François Ozon's Young and Beautiful (Jeune et Jolie), a well-observed, often fascinating exploration of a 17-year-old girl's willful entry into the world of prostitution. In some ways, it treads similar territory to Julia Leigh's Sleeping Beauty, but whereas that film maintained a detached, ambiguous tone toward the material, Ozon (Swimming Pool) takes the situation into far more unexpected, emotionally challenging places, thanks in part to a spectacular performance by the, yes, young and beautiful, Marine Vacth.Vacth plays Isabelle, a 17-year-old girl in a well-off family, who, as the film begins is still a virgin. That doesn't last so long though, as she more or...

Review: SCATTER MY ASHES AT BERGDORF'S Glories In Rare Luxury

Posted: 16 May 2013 02:00 PM PDT

If I whisper "Bergdorf's" in your ear and you experience a spontaneous orgasm, have I got a movie for you! Actually, calling Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf's a "movie" would be misleading, much less labeling it a "documentary." The title is inspired by a cartoon by Victoria Roberts that appeared in a 1990 issue of The New Yorker, and suggests the reverence felt by grateful designers, satisfied customers, and happy employees toward the luxury department store, considered a Manhattan institution as much for its landmark Fifth Avenue building (next to the Plaza Hotel and near the southeastern edge of Central Park) and intricately-designed window displays as for its high-fashion clothing and rarefied clientele. A parade of designers line up to pay obeisance to the store;...

Mickey Rourke Is Back In THE EXPENDABLES 3

Posted: 16 May 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Action legend Sylvester Stallone took to twitter last night to drop a few names and provide some update on The Expendables 3. Among his major reveal is the return of Mickey Rourke.  Rouke originally appeared only in the first Expendables as Tool, the recruitment liaison and armorer for the team as well as their tattoo artist.  His strong performance in his role bought a surprising emotional depth in an overly macho action flick. In other related news, Wesley Snipes is totally game to "fight to the top again", as Sly puts it, while he remains cryptic on Antonio Banderas and Jackie Chan possibly joining the action ensemble film.  Sly also mention that he has been scouting locations in eastern Europe and Asia.On which action films influence...

Review: 33 POSTCARDS Gently Tugs On Heartstrings

Posted: 16 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

33 Postcards is a film of special significance, as it marks the first official Chinese-Australian (New South Wales) film collaboration. At the 2011 Sydney Film Festival, where it had its world premiere, it won the Community Relations Commission Award. Just a couple of weeks later at the Shanghai International Film Festival, where it had its Chinese premiere, its lead actress Zhu Lin won the New Talent Award. Directed by Pauline Chan and inspired by real life events, 33 Postcards tells the story of a young Chinese orphan Mei Mei (Zhu Lin) who has been dreaming of meeting her Australian sponsor of many years, Mr Randall (Guy Pearce). Her opportunity comes when her orphanage travels to Australia to compete at a music festival. However, when she...

If you're one of the fans anxiously awaiting the first word on the newest picture from Hirokazu Kora-Eda, the man behind such critically acclaimed films as Nobody Knows, Still Walking, and I Wish, you might want to check out the first Japanese-language teaser, which has just emerged online. The movie, which will have its official premiere in Cannes later this week, marks the director's return to a familiar ground both in style and in subject matter. Giant monster, meet giant robot fist. After a storm of teasers, posters, viral clips and other sundry marketing materials the official main trailer for Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim has arrived. And it has lots and lots of what people want from the summer blockbuster: Giant monsters being punched in the face by giant robots. When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. CINEMA HOLOCAUST ON THE FRENCH RIVIERA, PART 1: THOSE GOD DAMN FILM BLOGGERS

MIKE'S JOURNAL. MAY 13. MORNINGI wake up sometime around five AM. My flight to France doesn't leave until five PM. I should be there for security check in sometime around 3PM. There is no reason for me to be up this early but I'm feeling anxious. I have an itch that needs scratching. I feel the urge to clean my knife collection before packing them into my luggage. I was hoping to do this while my wife, Cheryl, was still asleep. But I wake up to an empty bed. She's already up and fucking around somewhere in the house. She partied too hard yesterday, did too much molly, fucked too many of my friends. I bet she's sore as shit. I must have had her...

Review: Eco-Doc ELEMENTAL Brings Global Catastrophe Down To A Personal Level

Posted: 16 May 2013 11:01 AM PDT

Fresh from garnering two Social Impact Media Awards (Special Jury Prize, Best Editing), Gayatri Roshan and Emmanuel Vaughan-Lee's Elemental opens May 17 in New York City with subsequent rollout to San Francisco, San Rafael, Washington D.C., Austin, Portland, Bellingham, and more to follow. The documentary profiles three environmental activists in different parts of the world: Rajendra Singh in India, trying to rehabilitate the Ganges river, Eriel Deranger, an indigenous activist to stop the tar sand pipeline project in her home province of Alberta, and Jay Harman, an inventor and naturalist trying to eradicate air pollution and reduce the energy consumption. Skillfully interweaving three timelines of these David vs. Goliath battles -- be them against pollution itself, non-responsive government, public perception, or lack of funding -- Elemental rises...

Bruce Willis, Poisoned Hitman, Faces EXPIRATION

Posted: 16 May 2013 10:30 AM PDT

Do you remember Edmond O'Brien in D.O.A.? Or Dennis Quaid in D.O.A.? Or Jason Statham in Crank Well, you're not the only one. Bruce Willis is attached to star in Expiration, according to Screen Daily. He'll play "a hitman who is poisoned and has to find a cure before he dies." Brian Tucker wrote the screenplay and will produce; his previous produced credit is Broken City, which came out earlier this year and was definitely a mixed bag. (My review.) Tucker is also listed as having a hand in the writing of the proposed Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance remake. At 58, Mr. Willis is still viable as an action star internationally; he's got Red 2 coming up later this year. Reportedly, this production is budgeted...

Review: PIETA, Searching For Humanity In An Unspeakable Monster

Posted: 16 May 2013 10:01 AM PDT

Throughout his career, Korean auteur Kim Ki-duk has been a director known to explore the extreme poles of human experience. The divide in his work, in the style and content of one film to the next, is often so sharp that it is hard to believe that they are the works of the same man. At one extreme there are films marked by a harsh nihilism, pictures driven by anger and degradation. And at the other end there are contemplative, peaceful works -- films that, while they acknowledge that the world is a dark place, find beauty and hope in human fragility. With his 18th film, Pieta, Kim attempts something new. He fuses the poles together. But make no mistake: there is no middle ground...

The Lion Roars Again In The First Look For Suriya's SINGAM 2

Posted: 16 May 2013 09:30 AM PDT

The last time we saw Kollywood's leading action star, Suriya, he was playing kung fu fighting conjoined twins in K.V. Anand's medical action thriller, Maattrraan. That film, while okay, never really delivered on the promise that is inherent in a medical action thriller about a pair of kung fu fighting conjoined twins. This time around Suriya is returning to a role that has become iconic in Singam 2. The first Singam film was a huge success in Kollywood, but inspired an even bigger success story with its Bollywood remake in 2011, Ajay Devgan's Singham. This time around it looks like more of the same, but the first one was ridiculously entertaining, so I'm okay with that. This first look teaser does exactly what it says on...

Review: FRANCES HA, Adrift In The Big City, Colorful Self-Deception Intact

Posted: 16 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Noah Baumbach has been a polarizing filmmaker since he burst onto the scene with his first high-profile feature, 2005's The Squid and the Whale. Aside from launching Jesse Eisenberg's career, that effort also familiarized the film world with Baumbach's quirky indie voice. While like nails on a chalkboard to some -- see critical reaction to Margot at the Wedding and Greenberg -- Baumbach's minimalist, self-deprecating style has been emulated by many in the years that have followed. His latest, Frances Ha, is every bit as Baumbachian as his previous work, yet feels somehow more accessible as well, aside, perhaps, from the black-and-white photography, which, at times, evokes early Woody Allen or the French New Wave. It is up for debate whether this is because of...

Review: BLACK ROCK, A Survival Thriller With Too Few Thrills

Posted: 16 May 2013 08:00 AM PDT

In her first directorial turn, actress Katie Aselton impressed indie audiences with her relationship comedy The Freebie. Looking to go in a completely different direction with her sophomore effort, Aselton and husband Mark Duplass worked up the outline for a survival thriller. Duplass wrote a screenplay and the indie finance engine that the Duplass Bros. have nurtured kicked into high gear. Less than one year later, we have Black Rock. While this deserted island chiller has some good moments, it's hard to walk away without thinking that just a bit more time in development could have made this a much better movie. Things begin when Sarah (Kate Bosworth) goes to great trouble to assemble her two best friends Abby (Aselton) and Lou (Lake Bell) for...

Cannes 2013 Review: THE BLING RING Pawns Character for Coolness

Posted: 16 May 2013 07:30 AM PDT

It's difficult to talk much about Sofia Coppola's latest The Bling Ring without address this year's other cute-teens-as-criminals film Spring Breakers -- so let's just get the comparisons out of the way right off the bat. While both films can be accused of glorifying crime by taking voyeuristic trips into the lives of good kids gone bad, Harmony Korines's film does it with scathing sensationalist satire that simultaneously disarms the audience and inserts a distance from the acts portrayed. By contrast, Coppola's take on her true-story subject matter is a totally straightforward telling that goes so far to include documentary elements. The result is a glorification of the kids' lifestyle that relies on the true conclusion's punishment to deliver her message. It's the opposite...

Cannes 2013: A Cheeky Look At The Cast Of NYMPHOMANIAC

Posted: 16 May 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Banned or not, you can't have a Cannes festival entirely devoid of some Lars Von Trier-related shenanigans. The Hollywood Reporter today showed a still, released in Cannes by production company Zentropia, of the cast of Von Trier's upcoming "sex film" Nymphomaniac. The picture shows every major cast member carefully choreographed into a variety of cheeky positions. The article does point out a few of the jokes in the picture, the funniest of which has Lars Von Trier standing gagged in the background. Probably so he cannot say anything in support of Hitler this time? Shia LeBeouf, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Christian Slater and Willem Dafoe can also be spotted. Check out a bigger version in the gallery below. Zentropia revealed the premiere date: expect Nymphomaniac to arrive in...

St Kilda 2013 Preview: Why the Annual Music Video Program Rocks

Posted: 14 May 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Last year two things completely changed my perspective on watching music videos.First, Natasha Pincus' phenomenally successful video for Gotye's Somebody That I Used to Know was selected to play in SXSW and I helped Natasha with a little freelance marketing ahead of her trip overseas to attend the festival. During our talks, I was impressed by Natasha's articulation about the importance of music videos not just as part of film festival programming but as works of art in their own right. I was especially struck by her emphatic assertion that filmmakers who make music videos with the intention of creating art should be embraced and celebrated alongside the very best short filmmakers, and where better for this to happen than at a film festival...
