Full Program for the 60th Sydney Film Festival Announced!

Posted: 08 May 2013 01:00 AM PDT

The much anticipated full program for this year's Sydney Film Festival, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary, has just been announced. The 190-film program looks filled with wonderful treasures for all film lovers. At first glance, some highlights, besides the ones that I have mentioned previously, include Richard Linklater's Before trilogy: Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives and David Gordon Green's Prince Avalanche. But it will seriously take me a good couple of days to study, research and digest everything that is on offer. So I will now be locking myself in my room with nothing but the program and some Tim Tams, and in the hopefully not too distant future, I will be back sharing with you...

Time To Get Wasted! First Trailer for Edgar Wright's THE WORLD'S END Lands!

Posted: 08 May 2013 12:20 AM PDT

The first teaser trailer for The World's End, the third and final entry in Edgar Wright's "Cornetto Trilogy" has just landed, and it manages to hit all the right beats. Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Martin Freeman, Paddy Considine and Eddie Marsan play five childhood friends who reunite 20 years after an epic 12-stop pub crawl attempt, hoping to finally complete the challenge, only to discover that they're about to get annihilated - by aliens! That's right, as they attempt to work through their personal and inter-personal problems, it appears that the Earth is dealing with a slight problem of its own - an alien invasion. Suffice to say, there will be plenty of irreverent humour, knowing nods to classic sci-fi - most prominently Invasion of the Body Snatchers...

Review: THE GREAT GATSBY Is a Class Assignment You'll Want to Skip

Posted: 07 May 2013 09:59 PM PDT

Baz Luhrmann's half-frenetic, half-subdued version of The Great Gatsby is almost 100 percent faithful to the novel in terms of plot, and almost zero percent faithful in terms of theme, character, and impact. I don't doubt that Luhrmann and his co-writer, Craig Pearce, have read the book, but if what's on the screen is any indication, they didn't understand it. In the movie version, almost-30-year-old Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) is a blank-faced, Midwest-raised stock broker just starting out on Wall Street in the summer of 1922. He has a modest home in a part of Long Island populated by the nouveau riche, including his next-door neighbor, the smugly enigmatic Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio), whose opulent mansion is the site of frequent raucous parties attended by...

ENDER'S GAME Trailer Offers Nothing New in Blockbuster Landscape

Posted: 07 May 2013 03:15 PM PDT

I understand that there is some Hollywood rule out there that all Hero-Journey Blockbuster (tm) trailers have to look alike.  I understand that if you have Harrison Ford in your movie that you might as well use his voice to sell your movie.  What I do not understand is whether Gavin Hood aims to preserve the tone of Ender's Game, very much from a young (if extraordinarily gifted) child's point of view, instead of indulging in noisy action blockbuster familiarity. Two things:  Haliee Steinfeld (the young lead from the Coen's remake of True Grit) goes a fair way in confirming her acting ability with nothing more a single glance on screen.  It is delightful to see Viola Davis back in Solaris mode; she should be in more...

Now on Blu-ray: Stuart Gordon's FROM BEYOND Scream Factory US & Second Sight UK

Posted: 07 May 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Stuart Gordon's From Beyond has always been the stepchild when it came to his Lovecraft adaptations. The iconic gore fest Re-Animator is the elephant in the room, there's no two ways about that. While Re-Animator has gained an immense cult following, well deserved I might add, From Beyond languished in home video hell for many, many years. It wasn't until 2007 that the film hit DVD, and in its unedited, "director's cut" version and finally began to win some of the praise that it deserved all along. Now, as the Gods are good, we have not one, but two editions of what may be Stuart Gordon's crowning achievement in Lovecraft adaptation (Dagon and Castle Freak are fun, but definitely not in the running) on Blu-ray....

Posted: 07 May 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, one thing can be certain with a film like Blood Of Redemption. With a principal cast made up of Dolph Lundgren, Billy Zane and Vinnie Jones it will be filled with manly men doing manly things. Will there a be a decent script? Passable acting? Who cares! It's got bald guy versus bald guy versus big Swedish guy with a gun!Quinn Forte had it all: power, money, a brother who idolized him, and a woman who loved him.  He also had enemies.  In the course of one night, he loses everything.  Betrayed by someone in his inner circle, Quinn is set up and arrested.  His father, the patriarch of the criminal empire is killed and his brother suspects that Quinn is...

It's Fun Time With BUCKLES

Posted: 07 May 2013 01:50 PM PDT

It was back in 2008 that we first came across the work of Joe Ballarini here at Twitch. He'd penned indie horror-comedy Dance Of The Dead - still a great favorite - and a couple years later he turned up again as both writer and director of indie comedy Father vs Son. Ballarini is now involved with a few projects that look likely to go at the studio level but rather than wait around for those he's continuing to keep busy with smaller projects, in this case with horror short Buckles. Written and directed by Ballarini with The Signal and Dance Of The Dead star Justin Welborn in the lead, Buckles plays it straight. It's birthday time and someone's turned up to keep things festive....

THALE Director Brings Another Forest Creature To Life With Animated MUSHROOM MONSTER

Posted: 07 May 2013 01:00 PM PDT

It was back in October of 2011 while we awaited the premiere of Norwegian indie Thale that we first caught wind of an upcoming animated feature from director Aleksander Nordaas. Like Thale, Morkel The Moss Monster would present a revisionist spin on traditional nordic folktale creatures. But unlike Thale this one would be a family friendly animated feature. The success of Thale has led Nordaas all around the world in the time since but today we are happy to present the teaser for Mushroom Monster - an animated short created as a sort of test pilot for the feature length Morkel. If you were a little, hairy Mushroom Monster, how far would you go to get your paws on the biggest mushroom ever? "Mushroom Monster" is...

NYIFF 2013 Review: FILMISTAAN Illustrates South Asia's Filmi Fanaticism Beautifully

Posted: 07 May 2013 12:00 PM PDT

I've made allusions to the absolute mania that follows Bollywood stars around the globe, but it's hard to truly express what that is like to someone who is completely unfamiliar with this singular phenomenon. In India and South Asia in general, film stars are revered as divine, as such they inspire devout devotion the likes of which American film audiences just don't understand. Have you built a literal shrine to your favorite actor lately? Very few of us understand this kind of passion, but even those would be astonished by the passions of South Asian film fans. Thankfully, I now have Nitin Kakkar's Filmistaan to show just how powerful the cinema of India is in even the most unforgiving of circumstances.Sharib Hashmi is Sunny, one...

The World Is Less Fantastic Today. RAY HARRYHAUSEN 1920-2013

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:45 AM PDT

When I was a child my parents fought a lot. Screaming and yelling was pretty normal. The only place I found solace, even in those young years, was in movies on TV. I may have only been two years old when Ray Harryhausen's final film, Clash of the Titans, was released to theaters, but by the time I was five years old, it was on television every other weekend. That movie made my life magical for two hours at a time, and as a result, I dug in deep. I never thought about what made the figures move, I never thought of them as figures at all. This was fantasy, my fantasy of a world where parents fight, but sons prevail in the end. This...

Ewan McGregor Jumps From SON OF A GUN to JANE GOT A GUN

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:31 AM PDT

Ewan McGregor has just wrapped filming on Australian crime action-thriller Son of a Gun, and rather than get back home and chill out, he's opted to jump straight onto another project already in production. And it's not just any production but troubled western Jane Got a Gun, with McGregor taking over the villain role. Bradley Cooper and - before him - Jude Law had previously been cast to play the bad guy, so it seems the main idea behind casting this role was to cast against type. The film also stars Natalie Portman and Joel Edgerton and is being directed by Gavin O'Connor, who directed Edgerton in Warrior. If you've missed the saga surrounding this film, see the links below for comprehensive round-up of what's been...

James Franco To Star In Wim Wenders' EVERY THING WILL BE FINE

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:20 AM PDT

The peculiar career path of James Franco takes another interesting turn with word that the star has taken on the lead role in Wim Wenders' 3D drama Every Thing Will Be Fine and while it's been quite some time since Wenders has one much love for a narrative project - the days of Wings Of Desire and Paris, Texas seem well behind him - Wenders' documentary work remains so strong and vital that hope of a return to form on the narrative front always bubbles just below the surface.According to Variety, Franco will play Tomas, a writer, who accidentally causes the death of a child. The story follows Tomas through the next 12 years as he examines the effect of the accident on his life...

Andrew Garfield And Ken Watanabe Anchor Scorsese's SILENCE

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:10 AM PDT

It's a project that Martin Scorsese has been trying to get off the ground for roughly twenty years now and his adaptation of Endo Shusako's Silence looks as though it's finally ready to get off the ground with word that Andrew Garfield and Ken Watanabe have signed on in the lead parts with production scheduled to begin in summer 2014. Which, among other things, assumes that there won't be another Spider-Man sequel shooting next summer. Garfield will play a 17th century Jesuit priest in Japan during a time of religious persecution, forcing his to do his work underground. Watanabe will play his interpreter. Says Scorsese about the project: It's a thriller. Thriller meaning they are undercover.I'm interested in this, whether it's undercover priests or undercover...

Jeonju 2013 Review: The Ethereal DEAR DOLPHIN Explores Grief and Guilt

Posted: 07 May 2013 11:00 AM PDT

The most anticipated film of the Jeonju International Film Festival's Korean Competition this year, Kang Ji-na's feature Dear Dolphin, was also the most polished. With its themes of love, loss and loneliness, as well as its vibrant colors, strong mise-en-scene and well-judged flights of fancy, its appeal is universal. Hyeok-geun's life is thrown into turmoil when his young wife Cha-kyeong dies after being hit by a car. A year later her friend, who is also still devastated by her loss, not to mention guilt-ridden for having lent her the bike that the accident, visits him, asking him to accompany her on a trip to her burial site. As they both seeks to come to terms with the holes in their lives, they become close to...

NYIFF 2013 Review: OONGA Is A Little Boy's Dream Made Real

Posted: 07 May 2013 10:00 AM PDT

No matter where you come from, children are all the same. Mischief is their main motivator, and it is everything for them to feel a part of something. When a young boy, Oonga, in a remote rural village discovers that he's missed his class's trip to see the Ramayana performed on stage and the other kids tease him, he's not about to take it laying down. So begins an epic unplanned journey, fraught with danger and adventure, across Orissa in the eastern part of India, for this boy to fulfill his destiny alone. All of this youthful adventure plays against the topical backdrop of Naxalite (Socialist) rebels infiltrating small villages and those villages then being destroyed by the fighting between the rebels and government agencies.The...

Sci-Fi London 2013 Review: VESSEL Thoughtfully Depicts The Dark Side Of Psychic Powers

Posted: 07 May 2013 09:30 AM PDT

The world premiere screening of Vessel did not begin well. Out-of-synch sound forced the projectionist to stop film about 10 minutes in, and delay for half an hour while a back-up copy was found (I'm used to technical problems, so wasn't too bothered). Then, two patrons, whom I asked to stop their continuous talking through the false start, proceeded to bully me in both subtle and overt ways during the delay in order to get me to leave. Once the film started again, though, they were (mostly) quiet. I think this was due to the intensity and power of the film, which pulled their and my attention.Ash is a kind of psychic, who can communicate with extraterrestrials through visions that come into his mind without...

Review: STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS Boldly Goes Not Very Far

Posted: 07 May 2013 09:20 AM PDT

Star Trek Into Darkness begins with a thrilling chase sequence on a distant planet; a scene of immediacy and big budget spectacle. The film continues in this manner for most of its run time, punctuated by scenes that are less impressive and dialogue-driven. There is a bad guy (Benedict Cumberbatch) who makes things explode. There is a protagonist (Chris Pine) who tries to stop things from exploding with the help of his loyal crew. There is a bit more to this plot but not a great deal, and without spoilers Into Darkness can best be described as an insulated action adventure yarn that has great direction but a lack of scope. It is simply not epic; betraying the lore of 'Trek' and ultimately barely progressing past...

Fantasia Frontières' Tantalizing International Development Slate Includes New Joe Dante, Andrej Zulawski

Posted: 07 May 2013 09:00 AM PDT

With Tribeca and HotDocs wrapped, and Cannes gearing up, is it too early to start thinking of Montreal's Fantasia Film Festival?  I say, "Hell no!"  While we are well away from any programming announcements from the July-August festival, consider 2013's Frontières International Co-Production slate and hopping good times that it promises.   New projects from Joe Dante, Andrzej Zulawski, Bobcat Goldthwait, Steven "Manborg" Kostanski, Jason "I Declare War" Lapeyre, Richard Stanley and several others, are group of film endeavours in their infancy and looking to get some umbilical nutrients (ok, networking and capital) from attendees of marketplace mid-festival.  While the Rendez-Vous Market portion of Fantasia is only in its second year, it seems to have hit a fairly brisk stride.  Have a gander at the potential globe-hopping genre...

Hollywood Beat: Battle Of The Streaming Services Heats Up - Amazon Comedy Vs. Netflix Selection

Posted: 07 May 2013 08:01 AM PDT

Within recent weeks, Amazon.com launched 14 original comedy pilot episodes, Netflix launched another new original series -- then lost hundreds of titles -- and Warner Bros. launched a streaming service for their Warner Archive. The battle of the streaming services is heating up, and with good reason. Home spending on entertainment "rose about 5 percent in the first quarter," according to the Digital Entertainment Group (as reported by the New York Times). The same report noted: "Sales in digital formats, including video-on-demand, rose more than 26 percent to about $1.6 billion, from about $1.2 billion a year earlier. Packaged good purchases rose about 2 percent to roughly $2.1 billion in the quarter, driven by growing sales in the Blu-ray format." Note the dramatic increase in...

Wong Kar Wai Is Now A 'Commander' In France

Posted: 07 May 2013 07:00 AM PDT

It shouldn't surprise anyone that the French have long been head over heels for Wong Kar Wai's signature blend of Nouvelle Vague playfulness, melancholy and culture-specific subject-matter. But the country has gone ahead and confirmed it again anyway, having just given the director the highest cultural honor in France, the Commander of the Order of Arts and Letters. This award comes after he was made a Knight in France's Legion of Honor in 2006, so apparently not even My Blueberry Nights diminished his standing in the eyes of the French Ministry of Culture. The award of Commander is the highest honor awarded by the French Ministry of Culture, topping the arts and letters hierarchy just above Officer and Knight. Meanwhile, The Grandmaster is entering its...

Christopher McQuarrie Boards ICE STATION: ZEBRA Remake

Posted: 07 May 2013 06:32 AM PDT

Any idea what Ice Station: Zebra is? Until now I had no idea. However after the fantastically entertaining Jack Reacher, today's news that Christopher McQuarrie has signed on to direct the remake of this icy adventure makes it a must see in my books.According to the interwebs, Ice Station: Zebra is a 1968 cold-war era suspense and espionage film directed by John Sturges, starring Rock Hudson, Patrick McGoohan, Ernest Borgnine, and Jim Brown, loosely based on Alistair MacLean's novel of the same name. The movie had an all-male cast, something which will surely be one of the first things to change with a remake. Here's the synopsis from the original movie: Commander James Ferraday, USN, has new orders: get David Jones, a British civilian, Captain Anders, a...
