Watch Kim Jee-woon's New Short ONE PERFECT DAY for Free!

Earlier this year, Korean director Kim Jee-woon released his English-language debut, the Arnie vehicle The Last Stand. Though the film had decent reviews, it nevertheless tanked at the box office. Kim is now back on home soil and his first project was a short film commissioned for the 40th anniversary of the outdoor clothing manufacturer Kolon. You would think that the cineaste would return to his strong suit, namely hyper-stylized and violent genre films (A Bittersweet Life, I Saw the Devil) but then you'd be surprised to discover that his latest is actually a romcom. Kim's One Perfect Day was recently released on YouTube and is now available to watch for free with English subtitles in the embed below. The film follows a hapless young man...

St Kilda 2013 Preview: SXSW Sidebar to Showcase the Best of Texas

Posted: 08 May 2013 10:02 PM PDT

In this first preview of the St Kilda Film Festival which is held in St Kilda, Melbourne in May, I'm going to highlight the four SXSW sidebars that have been incorporated into the broader program this year. Known by its abbreviation SXSW, the South by Southwest Film Festival is a massive cross-platform event that takes place in Austin, Texas around March each year, and which coincides with the monster musical festival of the same name. This year St Kilda will also bring out SXSW Short Film Programmer Claudette Godfrey to introduce the SXSW sessions, participate in the filmmaker workshops and party into the wee hours - possibly breaking out her renowned karaoke version of Notorious B.I.G.'s 'Hypnotize'.The four programmed sessions from SXSW will include the Best...

RAKE Greenlit As Fox Drama Series

Posted: 08 May 2013 09:00 PM PDT

Rake is a TV program I've written about a few times here on Twitch, both in my best of 2012 list and in following the progress of Sony Pictures Television picking up the original Australian series and developing it as a pilot for Fox starring Greg Kinnear. In news that isn't too surprising as the project was classed as a 'put pilot' from the beginning, Fox has asked for a full series of Rake for 2014.Rake focuses on the life of criminal defense lawyer Keegan Joye (Kinnear), which is chaotic and often comedic. As rake means "a fashionable or wealthy man of dissolute or promiscuous habits" that gives you some idea of the type of character he is. I must say that in searching for an image online...

New Poster For Balaguero's [REC]4: APOCALYPSE

Posted: 08 May 2013 06:00 PM PDT

With Cannes around the corner the deep thinkers at Spanish production company Filmax want to let people know that their super-popular horror franchise [REC] hasn't wrapped up just yet. Series co-creator Jaume Balaguero is hard at work on the fourth and final installment - [REC]4: Apocalypse - which is expected to pick up the story from where [REC]2 left off and carry it through to its bloody end. And while there's no new footage just yet there is a new poster ready. And that's it up above....

Hot Docs 2013 Review: AFTER TILLER Is Important, Vital Look at Late Term Abortion Doctor in US

Posted: 08 May 2013 05:30 PM PDT

On May 31, 2009, Doctor George Tiller was murdered while attending his regular Sunday church service. The doctor was one of a handful trained and willing to perform what are almost antiseptically referred to as "late term" abortions, the termination of a fetus after around the twentieth week of gestation. While Tiller's work is legal in the state in which he practiced, he nonetheless became a figurehead for the anti-abortion movement. As such, his murder was both celebrated by some and caused shock and horror for others. What it did not do was cause a national rush in the US for other doctors to take up Tiller's mantle. The film After Tiller follows the four known doctors that continue to practice the controversial procedure, despite all the...

TTTT: Marvel's IRON MAN 3 Message to Comic Book Fans

Posted: 08 May 2013 05:00 PM PDT

One of the many old clichés in superhero comic books is a big blurb on the cover promising some massive Earth-shaking event, with the qualifier, "Because you demanded it!!!" "Because you demanded it! The ultimate showdown with Thanos!" Or, "Because you demanded it! The return of Gambit!" Or even "Because you demanded it! The final issue of Dazzler!" (And that claim may've more true than any.) That was the stuff of Marvel Comics when I was a kid. My wish was that one day, they'd make movies of these stories, and the rest of the world would then see how good they are (and that I'm not a nerd and was right the whole time and they were really missing out SO THERE!). This...

Buster Keaton on Blu-ray: COLLEGE Review

Posted: 08 May 2013 04:30 PM PDT

This is kind of a sad piece to write. For the last two years, I've been following Kino as they released their collection of Buster Keaton classics on Blu-ray, and College marks the end of these wonderful discs. In December 2012, Kino released their Ultimate Buster Keaton Collection on Blu-ray, which compiled all of their Blu-ray releases and added College as an exclusive, but thankfully those of us who'd been collecting all along finally get the chance to complete our own sets with this new ultimate edition of College. Not that this is the end of my Keaton collection by a long shot, but it will probably be a while before any of his other films make it to Blu-ray, so it's still a bit bittersweet.College...

Hot Docs 2013 Review: MUSCLE SHOALS Is A Stunning, Soulful Achievement

Posted: 08 May 2013 04:00 PM PDT

It's a rare thing, the truly engaging music documentary. You have to have a number of things come together to make it more than just a series of clips from some music you feel palatable. The best films are those that transcend simply a jukebox of tunes or talking heads interviews. These rare docs can connect with a viewer on a multiplicity of levels - through rich musicality, a creative presentation, an aesthetically adventurous visual take, and compelling, revealing anecdotes from the participants.Muscle Shoals is a terrific film, easily sitting along side the greats of this subgenre of music-oriented non-fiction filmmaking. It tackles an enormously important facet of popular music, and does so in both an accessible and yet thorough way. It is robust in...

Take a look at the whole kitten caboodle below.  BAMcinématek announces complete lineup for the fifth annual BAMcinemaFest, a festival of American independents with 22 New York premieres and one world premiere, June 19--28Opening Night--New York premiere of David Lowery's Ain't Them...

Watch The Coen Brothers' INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS Cannes Trailer

Posted: 08 May 2013 03:00 PM PDT

The Coen Brothers are headed to Cannes with Inside Llewyn Davis and they've got a new trailer to celebrate that fact. This one plays largely as an extended version of the earlier offering with a good deal of repeated footage but also enough fresh material to make it worthwhile. And while it is a red-band trailer that fact is entirely due to some salty language and not at all that the Coen's have turned in a folk singing splatter film. Which, to the best of my knowledge, they haven't.INSIDE LLEWYN DAVIS follows a week in the life of a young folk singer as he navigates the Greenwich Village folk scene of 1961. Guitar in tow, huddled against the unforgiving New York winter, he is struggling...

A Martial Arts Fantasy Anchored In A Tragic Reality, Watch Eric Lim's THE FORGE

Posted: 08 May 2013 01:11 PM PDT

There are certain filmmakers here at Twitch that we feel a certain bond with, creators that have somehow crossed over the line of simply being someone who made something cool and have become a part of the extended family. Most of them we've never actually met and many of them we never will and yet there's some sort of weird emotional bond there. Eric Lim is one of those people. We first came across Eric back in 2008 when he and a group of friends at the University of Wisconsin turned out an absolutely fantastic pair of Japanese scifi inspired short films titled Greenside and Zero Trooper. They were smart and funny, deceptively polished on the technical side and positively oozed heart and soul. They were...

Sci-Fi London 2013 Review: MARS ET AVRIL Deserves Greater Attention

Posted: 08 May 2013 11:45 AM PDT

Oh, what a wonderful, rich, glorious treat of a film Mars et Avril is. A sci-fi steam-punk romance with a terrific score, it is a delight to the senses. Visually stunning, melodramatic in its storytelling, and unafraid to delve into deep philosophical musings, apparently it's already been released on DVD, and I don't know if it ever had a theatrical release in Canada (though perhaps in Quebec). This is a film that demands to be seen on the big screen, but is by no means an easy watch, in the sense that it does ponder big questions, and asks the spectator to stretch their imagination more than usual. Written and directed by Martin Villeneuve (adapted from his own graphic novels) and set in futuristic Montreal, it...

Now on Blu-ray: Rock N Roll With REPO MAN (MoC UK) and HARD CORE LOGO 1 & 2

Posted: 08 May 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Another delayed review makes for a great triple feature here at Twitch! Two of my favorite punk rock movies made the jump to high definition in late 2012: Alex Cox's masterpiece, Repo Man, and Bruce McDonald's breakthrough road movie, Hard Core Logo. I have a long history with both, as a fan of punk rock movies going back to my earliest mohawked days. While the films are very different in terms of narrative structure, they share not only the backdrop of this music and culture that prides itself on antagonism, they are also films made in the spirit of punk rock. Disregard for authority and convention mark both films, to their great credit, and this makes them timeless, ripe for rediscovery by each new generation of...

Destroy All Monsters: Daddy Issues Are For Pussies, and Other Things I Learned From IRON MAN 3

Posted: 08 May 2013 08:01 AM PDT

"That's how Dad did it; that's how America does it; and it's worked out pretty well so far," Tony Stark / Robert Downey Jr. quipped in Iron Man, in a glib one-liner delivered to a hungry batch of arms-buyers, seconds before those selfsame arms blew the whole place up. It was American overconfidence, writ large - and welcome to Marvel's 21st century superhero world, where the villain might (if you're lucky) be the fella with the red skull for a head, but is more likely to be your kid brother, or your girlfriend's dad, or the creepy bald father figure running your daddy's company for you, with the not-at-all-evil-sounding name of Obadiah Stane. By the time Tony Stark is chiding an 11-year-old boy for...
