Speak of the devil! Alex van Warmerdam's film Borgman may not have won any of the big awards in Cannes, but it did score itself a distributor for North America. And that distributor is Drafthouse Films. Quoting Drafthouse Films founder and CEO Tim League in today's press release: "Maybe once a year, I am deluged after a premiere with texts and emails to the effect of 'this is such a Drafthouse movie', (...) it's strange, disturbing, hysterical and utterly unique. FANTASIA Temporarily Changes Cinemas And Key Art Tempts Fate

Anyone who has been to Montreal's genre-film extravaganza, The Fantasia International Film Festival (or just Fantasia) in the past decade or so, knows that the main screening venue, Concordia's Hall Theatre has some of the best audio acoustics in the country.  Watching films that heavily rely on rich sound design, such as [REC], Attack The Block or Milcrorze: A Love Story was a privilege and a treat.  Less amazing were the outdated and uncomfortable lecture-hall seating.  So while the university mercifully upgrades the padding and leg room, as well as projection equipment this summer, Fantasia has temporarily relocated its premiere screenings a couple blocks over to their original 1996 - 2001 home, the 800+ seat The Imperial Cinema.   The festival will continue have screenings and events at Concordia's J.A. de...

Twitch was first to break the word that The Grudge director Shimizu Takashi had landed the task of directing a new live action adaptation of the first two novels in the series which also spawned Miyazaki's beloved animation Kiki's Delivery Service - the Miyazaki is based solely on the first novel - and now the first image from the film has arrived online via Japanese film site Eiga.com.The picture features young figure skater turned actor Koshiba Fuka in full costume as Kiki with what I presume is the bakery where she will live and work in the background behind her. It's certainly a colorful affair and I'm more than a little curious to see how Shimizu handles the move away from horror....

Though best known as a horror filmmaker, Filipino helmer Jerrold Tarog has also won acclaim with the first two installments of his 'camera' trilogy. Indie dramas revolving around characters who use cameras in their everyday lives, the camera trilogy comes to a conclusion this year with Tarog's Cinemalaya entry Sana Dati.Beautifully photographed and boasting what look to be quite strong performances, the first trailer for Sana Dati has arrived and promises something quite different from what we've come to expect from the Philippines: a romantic drama that refuses to pander either to the mainstream cineplex crowd or the ultra low budget indie aesthetic and lands someplace really quite interesting.Check the trailer - English subtitles included - below....

The premise was not that original to begin with, however there's always a new form to tell old stories. Back in February it was announced that Astro-6 had won a Telefilm Canada grant to assist with production on The Editor, a film that has been in the works for a while.
