Review: PEE MAK PHRAKANONG is a Thai Horror Comedy Deserving of its Success

Re-inventing a classic Thai ghost story into a goofball comedy romance, seasoned director Banjong Pisanthanakun has scored a huge box office hit in his native Thailand. While unlikely to do the same kind of business outside South East Asia, Pee Mak Phrakanong is nevertheless an enjoyable and frequently laugh-out-loud crowd pleaser. Easily the most famous and successful horror filmmaker to emerge from Thailand in recent years, Banjong Pisanthanakun has scored a number of critical and commercial successes on the international stage with films such as Shutter and Alone. He recently directed a segment of Ant Timpson and Tim League's horror anthology The ABCs of Death (N is for Nuptials) and has now delivered the most successful Thai film of all time at the domestic box office. Pee Mak...

Hugh Jackman Turns Vigilante in First Trailer for Denis Villeneuve's PRISONERS

Posted: 01 Jun 2013 09:40 PM PDT

Quebecois director Denis Villenueve caught everyone's attention with the incredible Incendies in 2010, garnering a Best Foreign Language film Oscar nomination and a fistful of other awards in the process. His back catalogue also includes the terrifying true-crime drama Polytechnique, and now we get our first glimpse of the director's Hollywood debut, Prisoners - which boasts an impressive cast including Hugh Jackman, Jack Gyllenhaal, Terrence Howard, Maria Bello, Viola Davis and Paul Dano.Jackman plays the father of a little girl who goes missing, but when local cop Gyllenhaal releases Dano's prime suspect due to a lack of evidence, he takes the law into his own hands, going all vigilante on the guy. I have a sneaking suspicion that this first trailer for Prisoners, which is scheduled...

Review: IDDARAMMAYILATHO Delivers Ample Quantities of Ninjas, Action, Dancing & Romance

Posted: 01 Jun 2013 09:19 PM PDT

I'd like to say that Puri Jagannadh, one of Telugu Cinema's most successful directors, is an innovator. I'd like to say he pushes the boundaries of mainstream Telugu films and creates new pathways for established artists. I can't. The fact of the matter is that Jagannadh, director of such massive hits as Pokiri (remade in both Tamil and Hindi), The Businessman (one of the highest grossing Telugu films in US history), and Cameraman Ganga Tho Rambabu, is a master of exploitation. He knows what the audience wants and he delivers. He knows the strengths and weaknesses of his leading men, and men are always the leads in Telugu popular films, and he exploits them. This may sound like an indictment of his style, but it's...

The Kids Talk Film: PAPRIKA

Posted: 01 Jun 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Twitch has been on the internet long enough that many of its writing staff have children who are old enough to understand and consume media in a way that is both raw and fresh, along with  an inkling of consideration afterwards.  Many of us fall in love with the movies when we are so young. Thus, we are offering you the perspective of smaller children as they react to seeing classic filmmaking on the big screen.  In the past, Willem (Age 10) and Miranda (Age 8) have talked the films of Studio Ghibli as well as the early 007 outing, Thunderball as a part of our Twitch In Bondage series. Here they take in one of the most sophisticated Japanese animated films, Kon Satoshi's Paprika. The kids talk about...

Dan Harmon Returns To COMMUNITY

Posted: 01 Jun 2013 01:30 PM PDT

When news broke in mid-May that Community would be returning for a fifth season on NBC, the reaction from critics and fans was decidedly mixed, if not outright wary, with folks contemplating whether or not the show deserved or even needed another season after the rocky fourth -- but the desire to get the show to a healthy number of episodes for syndication spurred production company Sony and network NBC on. Much of fan's frustrations with the fourth season stemmed from the absence of show creator and runner Dan Harmon, who was let go after the completion of season 3. Harmon, often described as the brilliant heart of the show, and a true TV auteur, was also labeled -- mostly by his own hand --...

Greetings from Chile! A new teaser trailer for a new documentary from the South American country has arrived and it may be one of the most interesting concepts out there, a mixture of Catfish and road movie, and "Familia ASP" (the artistic collective that is behind the project) has released the first teaser trailer of Hola Ulises, Soy Paulina (Hi Ulises, I'm Paulina).
