First Look At Christophe Gans' BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 09:30 PM PDT

At the Cannes Film Festival, Pathé International released the first image for Christophe Gans' adaptation of the fairy tale Beauty And The Beast, featuring a first look at Lea Seydoux (Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol) as the beauty and Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) as the beast. Coming from the French director behind Brotherhood of the Wolf and Silent Hill, it wouldn't seem far-fetched to assume his take on the source material will contain a much darker tone compared to the Disney version.  Here's his statement on the film:BEAUTY AND THE BEAST is the adaptation of a story by Madame de Villeneuve. Published anonymously in 1740 as La Jeune Américaine et les contes marins, it paints a portrait of Belle, a joyful and touching young girl who...

Review: YAMLA PAGLA DEEWANA 2 Goes Any Which Way But Good

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 08:30 PM PDT

A couple of years ago, Bollywood legend Dharmendra (Sholay) put together a wacky comedy starring himself and his two movie star sons, Bobby Deol and Sunny Deol. That film was called Yamla Pagla Deewana (Nutty, Looney, Crazy) and was a big hit. The family played a family, the Singhs, with Dharmendra and Bobby essaying the roles of con men on the prowl for a quick buck, and Sunny playing a devout Sikh to whom such shenanigans were anathema. The trio come together, find a girl, fall in love, and attempt to con a different Sikh family, headed by Anupam Kher (Silver Linings Playbook), into marrying their daughter off to Gajodhar (Bobby), in spite of his not being an NRI like the family insists. That film was...

Fukk THE INTERNSHIP, Watch Max Barry's SYRUP Instead This Weekend

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 01:00 PM PDT

What a delicious irony. The same weekend the shameless product placement vehicle The Internship hits North American cinemas, discerning audiences will also be able to seek out Syrup, an adaptation of the brilliantly satirical Max Barry novel of the same name which takes square aim at marketing bullshit. Directed by Aram Michael Rappaport, Syrup stars Amber Heard, Shiloh Fernandez, Kellan Lutz and Brittany Snow, and while the short synopsis doesn't do the story justice here it is: A lowly marketing exec enlists the help of a scarily beautiful, brainy co-worker to save his million-dollar idea from corporate espionage in this scathingly funny send up of sex, celebrity, and greed. For those wondering about the headline, Fukk is the name of a fictional energy drink used in the book and film,...

Demons! Warlocks! College Kids In The Woods! It's A Second Trailer For UNFORGOTTEN SHADOWS!

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 12:30 PM PDT

Full marks to Ukrainian director Lubomir Levitski. He has clearly paid his dues watching American college-set horror films and mastered this particular sub-set of the horror world, both in terms of embracing the goofier conventions of the genre and building in some scares that while genuinely scary are every bit as much fun. Levitski is the man behind the camera for upcoming feature Unforgotten Shadows, a horror comedy due for release across the CIS later this month. We ran the first trailer for the film back in January and that has now been followed by a second effort that captures even more of the tongue in cheek tone of the film - it revolves around college kids trying to cage a demon awoken when one...

Review: THIS IS THE END, Celebrity Friends Laughing At Themselves And The Apocalypse

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 09:01 AM PDT

If you can't trust your best friend(s) when the world ends, who can you trust? Making their directorial debut, Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen have built a vehicle that is customized to fit the talents of their friends. Loosely constructed, yet jam-packed with a plethora of profane jokes and an overdose of obscenities, This is the End will likely appeal to anyone with a rooting interest in characters whose behavior can most generously be described as "boorish and bawdy but occasionally considerate of others," and who are the most likely to appreciate the overriding joke, which is that the actors play "themselves," adding another post-ironic layer to the proceedings, and allowing them license to ridicule one other's public persona. (Or, at least, their "public persona"...

5 Filipino New Wave Directors You Should Know (And Love)

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Skeptical critics always think that the time to sing the death of the Filipino new wave cinema has arrived. But just as they're warming up you get four new Filipino works at the latest Cannes Film Festival and you realize that the game has just started and the best is yet to come. It's not all about Brillante Mendoza (who has just finished his latest movie, Sapi), Adolfo Alix Jr., Auraeus Solito or the Rotterdam darlings Khavn De La Cruz, Raya Martin and John Torres - all accomplished auteurs who already have their festival milieu and aficionados. The truth is that Filipino cinema continues to be one of the most interesting in the world, a very prolific environment where every day it seems there are...

Review: Jade Castro's JUANA C. THE MOVIE is a Caricature that Seeks to Both Tickle its Audience and Tackle Pressing Issues

Posted: 07 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT

An actress working mainly in theater for several years, Mae Paner landed her greatest role when she, along with a ragtag team of advocate artists including esteemed playwright Rody Vera and other theater performers, uploaded a video on YouTube in 2008. The video features Juana Change, a full-bodied woman played with such infectious rabidity by Paner, playfully lampooning issues hounding Philippine society then. Paner has the look of the great Filipino comediennes of old, the Zoraida Sanchezes and the Nanette Inventors, who proudly parade their unusual beauty and trademark heft, to turn themselves into actual jokes instead of just deliverers of jokes. Paner understands the value of attention she gets. She mesmerizes with the curves she utilizes mostly for laughs, but earns much respect...
