James Gandolfini, aka Tony Soprano, Has Died Posted: 19 Jun 2013 08:30 PM PDT Actor James Gandolfini, best known for his multi-layered portrayal of a family man and mob boss on HBO's The Sopranos, has died unexpectedly, according to multiple news reports. He was 51. Born in New Jersey, Gandolfini made his Broadway debut in 1992, opposite Alec Baldwin and Jessica Lange in a revival of Tennessee Williams' A Streetcar Named Desire Six foot tall and broad-shouldered, his hefty figure helped him to stand out as a brutal force in supporting roles; he fit quite naturally, for example, in the sleazy world created by Tony Scott and Quentin Tarantino in True Romance as a creep who beats up Patricia Arquette before receiving his comeuppance. He could be an incredibly strong performer with steel in his eyes, as in Tony... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
New to iTunes Australia: Twitch Picks the Best of the New Stuff Posted: 19 Jun 2013 08:00 PM PDT Recently we started a New to Netflix column on Twitch for readers in the US, Canada and UK. We don't have Netflix in Australia (not that it wouldn't be welcome; Australian consumer advocate Choice has even written Netflix an open letter to bring its service here) so I've decided to start a New to iTunes column to fill the gap. I've recently started using the service quite a lot - despite occasional exorbitant prices, which really need to drop if the service is to become preferable to buying hard copies. However there are some good bargains to be found and films and TV worth shelling out for. [Twitch is not associated with iTunes in any way, this is just an acknowledgement that readers are accessing new... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Review: GUT Is A Micro-Budget Button Pusher Posted: 19 Jun 2013 07:00 PM PDT Independent horror films are a dime a dozen, always have been. It's quite rare that something appears that is actually worth talking about. While most no-budget horror features spend their time ogling tits, and bits and pieces of viscera, Gut takes a decidedly more introspective route, and is all the more noteworthy for it. Gut eschews the notion that the only way to make anyone pay attention is to yell and instead makes the viewer think, fear, and ultimately makes them question their own motives in a similar way to films like Michael Haneke's Funny Games. A minor achievement on its own, but hopefully just a starting point for director Elias, who seems to have a knack for making viewers very uncomfortable.Tom is bored. Incredibly,... Sam Taylor-Johnson Set To Direct 50 SHADES OF GREY Posted: 19 Jun 2013 03:00 PM PDT After rumours about the likes of David Cronenberg or Gus Van Sant taking on the reigns of one of the most popular novels of the decade, Deadline is reporting that Sam Taylor-Johnson is set to direct 50 Shades of Grey.Taylor-Johnson's previous films include 2008's Love You More and the 2010 Sundance film Nowhere Boy, which our Todd Brown quite liked, despite the challenges that the film's conceit has to overcome. The director's also received loads of tabloid press, for better or for worse, for marrying the much younger Aaron "Kick-Ass" Taylor-Johnson. Expect much to be made of this again when the tale of an older man seducing a younger woman gets bandied about in the tabloid media.I've not read the book, but do find the whole... Watch The English Subtitled Trailer For Israeli Thriller BIG BAD WOLVES Posted: 19 Jun 2013 02:33 PM PDT Israeli directors Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado created quite the international stir with their debut film Rabies a couple years back, the genre world embracing the first ever Israeli slasher wholeheartedly. And they were met rather resoundingly with the film receiving a fantastic critical response and a quick pick up for US distribution via Magnet Releasing.A series of brutal murders puts the lives of three men on a collision course: The father of the latest victim now out for revenge, a vigilante police detective operating outside the boundaries of law, and the main suspect in the killings - a religious studies teacher... 7 Superior Sequels (And Some Runners-Up) Posted: 19 Jun 2013 12:30 PM PDT Sequels are generally maligned, and most of the time rightly so. If a movie has been financially successful you can count on the fact someone will want to start a franchise out of it, raking in more money out of the same concept. It seems like an easy win: you've already got the first movie to provide word-of-mouth for the second. There are lots of pitfalls to avoid when making a sequel though: sequels may lack the spark of inspiration and enthusiasm which made the original so good in the first place; stories often suffer as they grow pretty convoluted, to allow the same leads having another adventure like the first one; and realism goes out of the window to get more spectacular visuals. But... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

SPECTACULAR NOW Trailer Sweet Talks Its Way Into Summer Posted: 19 Jun 2013 11:01 AM PDT The temperature is heading ever upward in the Northern Hemisphere. As the outside air warms up, and bodies begin to sweat, and clothes begin to stick to bodies, the thoughts of teenagers -- and those who remember their teen years -- turn toward serious issues, like getting older and falling in love. The first trailer for The Spectacular Now, starring Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley and directed by James Ponsoldt, appears to capture those sticky feelings of teenage summers. In his review for Twitch, Chase Whale wrote in part: The Spectacular Now will be remembered as a high school movie with a determined message - that living in the now is a constant change, whether we're ready or not. Destroy All Monsters: Retire Superman Posted: 19 Jun 2013 08:00 AM PDT While the internet is tearing itself apart in its efforts to empirically determine whether Man of Steel "sucks" or "is awesome" - because such things are now apparently possible, given Superman Returns' near-unilateral, and intellectually disturbing, dismissal - I'd like to pause to make a gentler request: may we please retire Superman? I understand why Man of Steel - and for that matter, Star Trek Into Darkness - is the way it is. I understand the market reality of Hollywood in the summer of 2013, and the theatrical exhibition industry for movies generally, and what is different about North America now versus 1938 (when Superman first appeared in Action Comics), or 1966 (when Star Trek first took to the air), or 1978 for that matter... FIDOCS 2013 Is Coming: Competition Lineup And Retrospectives Announced Posted: 19 Jun 2013 07:00 AM PDT The 17th edition of one of the most important film festivals in Chile announced its competition slate as well as retrospectives and other screenings of documentaries from famous directors. Dedicated exclusively to non-fiction filmmaking from Chile, Latin-America and the world, FIDOCS was created and still headed by legendary Chilean filmmaker Patricio Guzmán (Nostalgia for the Light, The Battle of Chile Trilogy). Since its beginnings FIDOCS has been a politically committed festival that inscribes each decision with a responsible editorial line, thus, the 40th anniversary of the coup d'etat that threw out the democratic government of Salvador Allende and put the dictator Augusto Pinochet at the head of state in 1973 couldn't possibly be without any notice in the programming of the festival, with a special...
