PiFan 2013: Preview Part V - Tsukamoto Shinya, Robots And Urban Cult

Posted: 17 Jul 2013 12:27 AM PDT

It is just over 24 hours until PiFan 2013 kicks off and here at Twitch we can barely contain our excitement - which you've probably noticed from our flurry of preview posts highlighting the best of what's in store over the next 10 days. Today, I wanted to highlight three of the festival's Special Programs, grouping together films either with common themes or from the same filmmaker. ...

Tropfest Mentors Young Filmmakers With Trop Jr Roughcut in Melbourne and Sydney

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Australia's biggest short film competition, Tropfest, is no stranger to expansion. After starting in a cafe in Sydney it's since grown to become a monolithic annual Summer event and has expanded internationally to include new competitions in New Zealand and North America, as well as Tropfest Arabia, covering the Middle East and North Africa. It's also expanded the age range of filmmakers it preaches to, introducing Trop Jr as a separate competition in 2008 for aspiring filmmakers aged 15 years and younger. Last year the brand grew even further, adding a filmmaking symposium called Roughcut to the calendar. And this year, Tropfest is launching Trop Jr Roughcut, a day-long filmmaking event aimed at inspiring and educating the next generation of Australian filmmakers. There are two such events this...

Mel Gibson Confirmed As EXPENDABLES 3 Villain

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 08:22 PM PDT

Long-rumoured to be joining the star-studded action franchise, Australian wild man Mel Gibson appears to have been confirmed as the main villain in next year's The Expendables 3. Sylvester Stallone, the series' star and creator, left a not-very-cryptic message on Twitter, referencing his own character and one made famous by the antipodean star: Gibson will join Expendables regulars Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren and Jet Li, as well as returning member Mickey Rourke (together quite possibly with cameos from Bruce Willis and/or Arnold Schwarzenegger) and newcomers Nicolas Cage, Jackie Chan, Wesley Snipes and Milla Jovovich, in what is shaping up to be the best line-up the franchise has seen so far. There are also rumours that Steven Seagal might also make an appearance. The Expendables 3...

NYAFF 2013 Review: Sono Sion's BAD FILM Is By No Means That

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 06:00 PM PDT

Nobody should walk into a Sono Sion film and expect to anything close to a conventional experience. The director's two most well-received films -- 2008's upskirt photography romance Love Exposure and 2010's fish store owner/serial killer epic Cold Fish-- are certainly not exceptions to this rule. This year at NYAFF, programmers selected an old/new Sono entry, 1995's Bad Film, for screening, and even if you've seen and enjoyed the two films mentioned above, you're in for a completely different ballgame when you sit down to this flick. When Bad Film was first shot in 1995, Sono was mostly known as the leader of Tokyo Gagaga, a performance art collective claiming membership in the thousands. It was with these individuals that Sono completed a rough --...

Rick Baker Shows How It's Done!

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 05:00 PM PDT

A few days ago, special effects make-up maestro Rick Baker posted a video on YouTube, in which he shows what he can do to himself in just one hour. Timelapsed to just under nine minutes, this is a rare behind-the-scenes peek at cinema magic being created on the spot. Rick Baker is a legend in his profession, responsible for the practical make-up effects in films as An American Werewolf in London, Videodrome, The Frighteners, Men In Black, and the Michael Jackson video for Thriller. He also designed the astonishing "black" make-up for Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder. And it is mesmerizing to watch this master at work. Enjoy!...

Blu-ray Review: MAWARU PENGUINDRUM (Second Half) Baffles While It Breaks Your Heart

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 04:30 PM PDT

(I always thought majorettes were kinda weird anyway...) Back in May, I reviewed the first half of the anime series Mawaru Penguindrum and was very, VERY positive about it. Those first twelve episodes tell the story of Himari, a young girl with a terminal disease, who lives with Shoma and Kanba, her two brothers. One day she dies, but miraculously revives, possessed by a strange entity. This entity commands the two brothers that in return for keeping their sister alive for a short while longer, they must bring it a mysterious item called "the Penguindrum". The rest of the series was spent with Shoma and Kanba, trying hard to find the Penguindrum, stirring up all sorts of trouble for a chance to keep their sister...

Euro Beat: Boys And Girls Of Larry Clark's New Paris Film, THE SMELL OF US, Get A Web Series

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 04:00 PM PDT

Larry Clark (Kids, Bully) is branching out a bit for his upcoming film, The Smell of Us, which takes place in France and is co-written by a French poet he met at an exhibition in Paris, Matthieu Landais. Emphasis on "a bit," though, since the plot supposedly concerns teenage "self-destructive skateboarders."Rocker Pete Doherety will apparently play a role in the film, but, as usual, the focus is on messed up adolescents. And now, courtesy of a new web series, you can meet them and take part in their summer shooting a movie with Clark. Directed by Thomas Kimmerlin, A Summer With Larry Clark's Kids will apparently document the lives of the four principal skaters, Théo, Hugo, Diane and Lucas as they act in the...

Review: THE WOLVERINE Aims High But Falls Just Short

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 03:00 PM PDT

I can't speak for everyone, but after a summer full of crumbling cities, robots, monsters, and the loudest sound effects I can remember, I felt the need to brace myself as I sat down to another big-budget action spectacle. Thankfully, with a smaller budget, a script concerned with characters (or at least one) and a more atmospheric mise-en-scene, The Wolverine, while still a summer tentpole, is in many ways the antidote to the maelstrom of destruction that's occurred in the multiplexes this season. However, while loaded with good intentions, James Mangold's addition to the X-Men series is nevertheless the victim of a few too many compromises. Second only to Iron Man in the Marvel-verse in terms of popularity, The Wolverine marks the titular character's sixth...

Full Disclosure: Nicolas Winding Refn Reveals 12 Unseen Classics

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Everyone has those classic films they are ashamed to admit they've never watched. No matter how big of a movie buff you are, there have to be at least a few "must-sees" that have slipped through the cracks. Here at Twitch we've been celebrating those films in our year-long series Full Disclosure (See our latest entry here). As part of our 5 Days of Refn series, we asked Nicolas Winding Refn to name twelve classics he is sorry to say he has yet to see. A self-described cineaste, Refn had few exclusions that only God would forgive -- but even he had a handful of gigglers. Click below to see Nicolas Winding Refn's List of Shame....

VAMPIRES Director Vincent Lannoo Takes Aim At The Priesthood IN THE NAME OF THE SON

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 09:00 AM PDT

Belgian director Vincent Lannoo first caught eyes around these parts with Vampires, his slyly tongue in cheek moc-doc exploration of 'real life' vampires living in Brussels and Montreal. With his latest film, In The Name Of The Son, he tackles a more horrifying and more true to life topic.Elisabeth is brilliant, radiant and sunny on the day Father Achille arrives at her home. He is going to become part of her family. A perfect family that admires Elisabeth so much for her chat show on "Christian Hope Radio", for the time that she devotes to others, her family and housework. But neither her faith, nor "Christian Hope Radio", nor love will prevent Elisabeth from falling into the harsh reality. The lies of her husband, the...

Nakamura Adapted CONFESSIONS Author's MURDER OF SNOW WHITE

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 08:00 AM PDT

Well, now, this is an intriguing combination.Japanese production house Shochiku have announced that Fish Story and Golden Slumber director Nakamura Yoshihiro is directing an adaptation of murder mystery novel The Murder Of Snow White from author Minato Kanae. And if that name sounds familiar it's because Minato is also the author of the novels that served as the basis for Nakashima Tetsuya's Confessions and Kurosawa Kiyoshi's Penance. A director who has proven himself adept at both quirky, small budget, character driven indies and large budget studio gloss, Nakamura has become one of the most respected talents in Japan and a great favorite on the festival circuit. This latest offering stars Inoue Mao as a plain looking woman named the prime suspect in the murder of...

Review: SKINS S7E03, PURE: PART 1 (Or, Cassie Remains Adrift But In A Distinctly Different Way)

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 07:00 AM PDT

Like Effy, Cassie (Hannah Murray) has now moved to London. She's been here for less time, though, and she has realistically not landed herself a perfect job. She works as a waitress at a cafe and is clearly searching for something but is struggling to pin down exactly what it is she wants. When she realises that somebody is following her and taking photos of her (that are posted online), she is understandably frightened, but she's also intrigued. At first glance, there are very few similarities between the Cassie we see here and the girl we got to know in the first two series of Skins. Of the three characters that we're getting to catch up with in the seventh series, Cassie is the one who...

First Trailer for 12 YEARS A SLAVE Reveals Epic Story and Cast

Posted: 16 Jul 2013 06:00 AM PDT

UK director Steve McQueen pretty much blew filmgoers away in 2008 with his intense political thriller Hunger, which examined the life of Bobby Sands and the Irish Troubles of the late 20th century. Then he turned that same intense eye to the politics of sex in contemporary New York with Shame in 2011. McQueen's films are marked by his consistent use of shots of incredibly long duration, ones that force the spectator to watch a face, or two people in conversation, until it is unbearable. While not strictly art-house cinema, these films definitely showed the mark of their director's strong eye for detail and presented a searing look into the human soul. Perhaps it is natural that he should examine another intense and sensitive political topic...
