Ah, Geez - Freeman For FARGO Redux? Posted: 26 Sep 2013 10:30 PM PDT Warm up the prowler and prepare for some pancakes - The Hollywood Reporter is, um, reporting that Martin Freeman is "tapped" to star in the FX Television reboot of Joel and Ethan Coen's 1996 film Fargo.Previously, THR had let us know that Billy Bob Thornton (no stranger to Coen's universe with the underrated The Man Who Wasn't There) was set to play "Lorne Malvo, the rootless, manipulative man who meets the small-town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction."Freeman is set to play Lester Nygaard, the character that was played by William H. Macy in the original flick. The show's going to be Exec Produced by the Brothers Coen, while the show runner will be Noah Hawley who has done some television... |

Posted: 26 Sep 2013 06:00 PM PDT Ghost In The Shell Arise's biggest enemies are fans' expectations. Most people who have watched or will be watching its first episode Ghost Pain would be very familiar with the incredibly rich GITS universe - the futuristic world of hacking and cybercrime first introduced in the classic anime film by Oshii Mamoru in 1995 and expanded upon in his 2004 film sequel and also Kamiyama Kenji's extraordinary anime series in 2002-03 and 2004-05. So this reboot, which will consist of four 50-60 minute episodes, comes with high expectations; and after seeing Ghost Pain, I could say that it is so far interesting but not spectacular.Ghost In The Shell Arise Border 1 - Ghost Pain tells the story of how Major Kusanagi's Public Security Section 9... |

His lonely existence changes when he is forced to care for a young boy named Joaquín, who is alone and searching for his family. After a local theatrical run earlier this year, the movie has made an impression... |
Kickstart This: Dad Unleashes Zombies. Must Rescue Child. Grabs Samurai Sword! Say Hello To HOZON! Posted: 26 Sep 2013 04:30 PM PDT I would be lying to you if I told you that I did not find anything about the concept of Hozon utterly enjoyable. Those closest to me would check me for a feverish and delusional state if I said so, because everything that filmmaker Dallas King is planning for his feature film is right up my godsdamned alley. A descendant of a famous samurai and a CEO to his biotech company accidentally unleashes a zombie horde with his research. Now he must fight his way to his daughter in the medical lab and rescue her, with sword clutched firmly in hand. Oh Hell. And Yes. The Director, Dallas King, wants to bring back the classic Horror and Action found in iconic films like ALIEN, THE... |
Posted: 26 Sep 2013 03:30 PM PDT Fantastic Corpse being a spin on the old parlor game exquisite corpse, only with a short film as the end result... a nine minute short directed by a different filmmaker every two minutes or so. This version has Oren Carmi (Goldberg And Eisenberg) creatinf the first minute, and then passing it on to Nacho Vigalondo (Timecrimes). Jim Byrkit, (Coherence), was only allowed to watch Vigalondo's minute. When Matt Johnson (The Dirties) joined in, he could only see what Byrkit had done and so on until Eugenio Mira (Grand Piano) completed the Fantastic Corpse. The shor film was screened at the Fantastic Fest Awards Ceremony, a mere 5 days after the project got off the ground, and now you can watch it below -- enjoy! ... |
Posted: 26 Sep 2013 02:30 PM PDT One of the reasons Morelia (FICM) is considered the very best Mexican film festival is its international lineup, always premiering in Mexico some of the most anticipated movies of the year (including the Palm d'Or winner). After rumors and predictions, Morelia 2013 finally announced the international wave of titles and, indeed, it's a real banquet for the cinema aficionado. It's important to note that some films are yet to be revealed (there's still hope for Miyazaki Hayao's The Wind Rises), as well as the secret special guest (Robert Rodriguez and Roman Polanski amongst the rumors). Meanwhile, in the gallery below you can find the international menu so far confirmed (with a link to a Twitch review if possible)! And don't forget to check out the other... |
Review: In INEQUALITY FOR ALL Robert Reich Takes His Economics Class On The Road Posted: 26 Sep 2013 01:00 PM PDT Depending on your own political perceptions, Jacob Kornbluth's documentary about Robert Reich, the former U.S. Secretary of Labor under Bill Clinton's first term, and his quest to right the wrongs of the failing economy by educating the people might float your boat or boil your blood. There is little doubt that his agenda would be deemed a liberal one (though if you want to get particular it is actually very moderate), but to consider the film itself and what Reich is talking about as merely political propaganda is quite limiting and frankly, in my mind, silly. The issues at hand go way beyond donkeys and elephants. If there are politics in the film (and there are) then those are squarely fixed on the betterment of... |

Drafthouse Acquires Matsumoto's TIFF Midnighter R100 Posted: 26 Sep 2013 12:15 PM PDT Hot on the heels of their acquisition of Sono Sion's Why Don't You Play in Hell?, Drafthouse Films announced today they will be distributing Matsumoto Hitoshi's brilliant dominatrix action-comedy R100. The fourth feature from the uber-famous Japanese comedian, Matsumoto's film recently world premiered at TIFF 2013 in the Midnight Madness section before making its US debut at, surprise surprise, Fantastic Fest 2013. Here's what Todd had to say in in his review titled "R100 Is Another Mind Bending Trip From Japan's Savant Of The Strange": What Matsumoto has done here is essentially take the premise of David Fincher's The Game and applied it to S&M with some very odd and frequently perplexing results. Matsumoto engages in what is now recognizable as his customary structural... |
Review: Enigma of Harry In HARRY DEAN STANTON: PARTLY FICTION Posted: 26 Sep 2013 12:00 PM PDT There are only a few actors I can think of whose faces alone speak volumes without uttering a word. Harry Dean Stanton possesses one of those. He always looks like hell. Having appeared in more than 200 feature films, even my Korean grandma recognizes his weathered face: he meowed into his demise in ALIEN, got to have Adrienne Barbeau all to himself in ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, taught Emilio Estevez some codes to live by in REPO MAN, failed to seduce Warren Oates in TWO LANE BLACKTOP and made Nastasha Kinski and everyone else cry in PARIS, TEXAS.Swiss filmmaker Sophie Huber's portrayal of Harry Dean Stanton isn't exactly a revealing documentary per se. Because the 86-year old character actor, isn't really a talkative fella. Rather,... |
Review: WE ARE WHAT WE ARE, Tastefully Macabre Posted: 26 Sep 2013 11:00 AM PDT Let's get this out of the way right off the bat: We Are What We Are is not a remake. Differing greatly from the original Jorge Michel Grau Spanish-language version, the creative team of Jim Mickle (writer/director) and Nick Damici (writer/co-star) have taken the original concept of ritual cannibalism and inverted it, switching almost every trope in the initial version, and spinning it into something completely their own. In this Americanized take, Iris and Rose Parker (Ambyr Childers and Julia Garner) are two young girls living in a rural community who have recently lost their mother, and are now left to tend to the needs of their little brother Rory, and ailing father Frank (Jack Gore and Bill Sage). Stand-offish and a mystery to the... |

As a torrential rainstorm moves into the area, tragedy strikes and his daughters Iris (Ambyr Childers, THE MASTER) and Rose (Julia Garner, MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE, SIN CITY: A DAME TO KILL FOR) are forced to assume responsibilities... |
Fantastic Fest 2013 Review: CHANTHALY Is A Haunting Portrait Of Modern Day Laos Posted: 26 Sep 2013 09:00 AM PDT Hailing from a country that has produced fewer than 10 feature films in its entire history, Chanthaly proves a modest yet potent little chiller that blends an unsettling slowburn ghost story with an enlightening portrait of women's roles and patriarchy in one of the world's few remaining hard line Marxist nations. Chanthaly marks a number of firsts in a country largely unfamiliar with homegrown cinema. Director Mattie Do is not only the first woman ever to make a feature film in the Lao People's Democratic Republic, but she has directed the nation's first ever horror film. As is the case in many Communist countries, the ruling party is generally uncomfortable with any depiction of an afterlife or the supernatural, and Do, together with her screenwriter husband... |
Review: ON THE JOB, Dark, Hellish And Brilliant Posted: 26 Sep 2013 08:00 AM PDT Erik Matti's slow burn crime thriller offers a tantalising glimpse of the class struggles and high-level corruption in modern day Philippines, punctuated by taut action beats and a parade of tough, impressive performances. Apparently based on true events, On The Job follows a variety of players in a multi-faceted assassination racket that sees incarcerated prisoners secretly pulled out of jail, to be used as hit men for corrupt government officials. For the trigger men, the job offers a healthy payday and frequent opportunities to visit their loved ones or savour other fruits of the free world. For the high-ranking members of the government and military, it's an easily contained operation with no shortage of willing, easy-to-control candidates. For the cops, however, it proves increasingly difficult... |
Review: DON JON Bulks Up the Body and Career of Joseph Gordon-Levitt Posted: 26 Sep 2013 07:00 AM PDT Warning: the words "cock," "cum," and "masturbation" are used in this review. With that out of the way, let's get filthy. Joseph Gordon-Levitt is constantly on the move, making new projects with his online art collaboration company, HitRECord.org, and working as an A-list actor with some of Hollywood's most prolific directors. The Boy Wonder has now taken his career in a gutsy new direction: writing, directing, and starring in a movie called Don Jon, about a rico suave obsessed with porn. And not just your Average Joe (hehe) who likes porn - this guy lusts for porn and watches it while in class, driving, and after having sex with a woman you and I would never ever get a second glance from. He's so unsatisfied... |
