First Trailer For Abortion-Themed Chilean Thriller APIO VERDE Provokes Controversy

Posted: 15 Oct 2013 03:30 AM PDT

The first trailer of the new movie by genre-film Chilean director Francesc Morales (Humanimal), has appeared after months from its first screenings around the world in different festivals and venues, and now is trying to have a Chilean release, but for that, it needs your help. The director has put up a Idea.me page to raise 2000 dollars to have it released in Chilean theaters, that is the main goal for a movie like this, that tries to bring a new topic to the table: therapeutic abortion, a practice that is illegal in the South American country. The film tries to raise awareness about this subject, and the synopsis reads as follows:Adriana is told the child she's expecting has a brain malformation that won't allow him...

It's Official! Ben Wheatley To Direct Two Episodes Of DOCTOR WHO!

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 09:30 PM PDT

Our love for British director Ben Wheatley knows no bounds. We have been massive fans of his since Down Terrace and have followed him diligently through Kill List, Sightseers and A Field In England. And now the director has given us another reason to applaud him. Todd shared the possibility the other day that Wheatley was on the director's list, but now it has been officially announced that Wheatley will direct the first two episodes of season eight of Doctor Who. He will also direct the new Doctor, Peter Capaldi, who will take over from Matt Smith. The only downside to all of this is that these episodes will not air until Fall 2014! Egads!"I am very excited and honoured to be asked to direct...

Paul Rudd Or JGL May Experience Shrinkage In ANT-MAN

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 08:30 PM PDT

With Edgar Wright's big debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe now being pushed up to July 31, 2015, the Brit director is well into pre-production for the film with a start date for photography looming quite near, and that can only mean one thing... Marvel needs to cast their pint-sized hero very soon.Variety reports that their shortlist is in and the names on the table are Paul Rudd and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. No doubt two big 'uns, but nonetheless rather interesting ones to toss out there. Now while JGL seems pretty much destined to play a super hero at some point in his career, Rudd's name is the far more intriguing choice to me, merely because I think he makes any movie he's in all the...

Indie Beat: Matt Johnson And The Unbearable Lightness Of Movies -- THE DIRTIES Director On Media And Obsession

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 05:00 PM PDT

Matt Johnson is the director, co-writer, co-editor and co-producer of The Dirties. That's a fair number of hats, to be sure, but in the world of micro-budget filmmaking this is more often than not the norm. What makes these roles even more interesting in Johnson's case is that he also stars in The Dirties as... Matt Johnson, a high schooler obsessed with movies. The Dirties is shot as a faux-documentary, chronicling Matt, and his friend Owen's (played by real life buddy Owen Williams) attempt at making a pastiche heavy revenge movie where they kill the gang of bullies at their school which they've dubbed 'The Dirties'. What begins as an outlet to vent their own frustrations and abuse soon takes a dark turn when Matt...

Watch TRICK, The First Of Shock's Halloween Night Short Films.

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 02:00 PM PDT

Okay. You have two weeks left to get into the mood for Halloween. So why not take a moment for a Halloween quickie and watch the short Trick from Ritual director Mickey Keating. Shock Til You Drop begins this year's Halloween Night Short Film series with Keating's short film that starts with a woman tied to a chair. "For the film, I wanted to put a very stylized spin on the old horror trope of the helpless victim tied to a chair, awaiting their doom.  In this case, the doom is in the form of a costumed killer who collects the heads of trick-or-treaters on Halloween night."...

Sitges 2013 Review: THE GREEN INFERNO Runs Red With Blood

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

Eli Roth has been an audience favorite here in Sitges for a long time. It's been more than ten years since Cabin Fever left Sitges fans wanting for more, with some claiming Roth to be the new Raimi. Fortunately Hostel proved that Eli Roth was indeed in the right track to become an essential name in horror cinema today. So it's only natural that the anticipation was very high this year for Roth's latest offering, The Green Inferno, a love letter to the sub genre of cannibal films as made famous by Italian 70's and 80's classics such as Cannibal Holocaust. The premise for the film is quite simple. Justine is a young and idealistic girl from a wealthy family who wants to do something more...

Elizabeth Olsen Should Never Read Josh Brolin's Letters! It's A New OLDBOY Clip

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

No matter how you feel about Spike Lee "reinterpreting" Park Chan-wook's Oldboy (me, I'm neutral as I'm merely so-so on the original) one must admit that Film District's marketing machine has been pumping out some decidedly intriguing material over the past few months, from trailers to posters and other materials. Today brings us a new clip featuring Josh Brolin confronting Elizabeth Olsen who has just read his letters... which, pro tip, kids, is something you never want to do. I mean look at that man. He's serious. In addition to the clip, a few new stills have come along too, featuring Samuel L. Jackson, Sharlto Copley and Pom Klementieff. Check 'em all out below.Oldboy releases in the U.S. on November 27....

STALINGRAD Smashes Records In Opening Weekend

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT

When the trailers for Fedor Bondarchuk's Stalingrad arrived earlier this year, we sat up and took notice. While Fedor had shown in the past to be a very accomplished director, the massive scale and visual richness of what was shown impressed. No doubt there were plenty of spectacular pictures here, especially when seen in the intended format, which happens to be 3D IMAX. Pretty pictures or not, the real siege and battles of Stalingrad are still considered to be a sore point in Russian history, for while the German army was eventually repelled, the human cost had been absolutely staggering. To try and base a commercially viable monster production on it sure was a risk, but one which seems to have paid off: Stalingrad has...

Sitges 2013 Review: AMERICAN JESUS, An Outside Look At The Fringe Faces Of Christianity

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT

When an American tells you that they're a Christian, you might need to ask them what denomination, and the answer you get might not be one of the more common ones. In his second feature documentary, Spanish directer Aram Garriga travels across the United States to find the unique, the odd, and the sometimes arguably baffling Christian sects that find ther niche in a country perhaps too obsessed with religious worship and devotion. Fascinating, open and non-judgemental, American Jesus is an amazing film, the kind that only an outsider could make.Garriga introduces the audience to various members of these sects, which are various: a cowboy church, a surfer church, one started by a biker, another that focuses on showing feats of strength as evidence of God,...

Warsaw 2013 Review: Making Soups Is An Art Form In The Delightful DROPS OF HEAVEN

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT

Japanese love their food probably as much as any other nation does, but the way they prepare it brings to mind a very solemn and breathtaking ritual, during which everything must be arranged in a specifically detailed order so as not to disrupt the whole laborious process. Japanese people treat food exactly like art as they create many gorgeous-looking, mouthwatering dishes that taste even better than they look. It's an undisputable fact that Japan has one of the best cuisines in the world and its chefs are among the most sought-after.Japanese films only confirm the fact that citizens of this country take great pleasure both in cooking and in promoting their traditional dishes. Whether it's a comedy-horror such as Dead Sushi, anime like Spirited Away,...

Interview: Bogendorfer and Sedmak on INNERE BLUTUNGEN

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT

During the Filmfest in Hamburg I had the opportunity to meet with Austrian directors Florian Sedmak and Anatol Bogendorfer and talk about their film Innere Blutungen. The film entirely consists of found footage and read-out newspaper articles showing rural life in Austria between 1965 and 1975. What I am obviously interested in is how did you get all this material and how many Super-8 tapes did you have in the end? Anatol: Concerning the visual part it was quite a quest. We first started with photography and just asked friends and relatives. Later on we went to archives to find material of the period between 1965 and 1975. And it became obvious that in this period there was this great hype of amateur Super-8 films....

New York Film Fest 2013 Review: Spike Jonze's HER Is The New Anthem Of The Millennial Generation

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 09:00 AM PDT

It's hard to believe that Her is only Spike Jonze's fourth feature film. But with each new film, he is proving to be one of the most innovative filmmakers working today. He's always been creating worlds that are just ahead of the curve. Written solely by Jonze for the first time, Her is a surprisingly thoughtful and moving film. In a mere two-hour running time, it raises a lot of important issues in our society which is heavily dependent on technology. And it's bound to be a cult classic. Her refers to the new operating computer system that our sad sack protagonist Theodore Twombly (played beautifully by Joaquin Phoenix) falls in love with. She is a cross between an operating system and Siri. The setting is...

Twitchvision: Jason Gorber Talks CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, Denis' BASTARDS, and More!

Also chatted about Claire Denis' Bastards (playing Toronto's TIFF Lightbox as part of a major retrospective), Machete Kills, and The Right Kind of Wrong, three films that for various reasons were really not for me.Video embedded below...

When we last heard from Hungarian director BernĂ¡th Zsolt he was putting the final touches on kid-oriented adventure film In The Name Of Sherlock Holmes and he's back now with another genre picture for younger viewers. Production has wrapped up on science fiction film Aura and while we wait for a trailer for the film we do have the video below of Zsolt talking about the picture. Check it out!Four kids, Tokyo, Pete, Adam and Esther wake up in their stranded car in an abandoned field only to find that the Sun did not rise. What's more, they discover that a strange, 30 foot diameter, almost invisible, bionic "aura" is covering their surroundings. Discover Satanism In Sitges

Posted: 14 Oct 2013 05:00 AM PDT

Audiences at the Sitges Film Festival have been spoiled this year, treated to a hysterically funny - in very dry, understated style - series of 'public service announcements' screening before all feature films. This year's festival bumpers perfectly mimic the style of the ultra-happy television PR campaigns conducted by the Mormon church, among others, except instead of asking you to consider the possibility that golden tablets descended from heaven will make your family life so much more fulfilling they instead ask you to consider how much happier you would be if you embrace Satanism. Take a look at the complete series of videos below....
