Review: Beauty Is A Dangerous Obsession In HELTER SKELTER

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 10:00 PM PDT

Director Ninagawa Mika's sophomore effort offers a strangely nightmarish, bitterly expressive insight into the controversial world of fashion, which plays like a visionary social critique of the modern world's obsession with beauty and the consequences that follow. Ridiculous as it may sound at first, Helter Skelter is a horror-esque tale not for the squeamish that uses luscious, almost sugary imagery and an impressive palette (red being the omnipresent colour) as a camouflage for its many horrifying, yet completely earthly observations. Ninagawa creates a universe that's secluded and distorted, filled with characters that not only act as brainless caricatures, but also behave in such a way that's incomprehensibly appalling. Yet, it's surprisingly easy to watch them in their own environment and observe the way they destroy...

ANTISOCIAL Creators Return With THE DROWNSMAN

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 09:30 PM PDT

No rest for the wicked they say and the makers of Canadian horror flick Antisocial are chugging right along onto their next film under the working title of The Drownsman. The Drownsman is the second film in a planned trilogy of horror films from Black Fawn Films. Cast and crew are in the middle of an 18 day shoot in Guelph, Ontario, where I will be this Thursday, visiting the set and making an unbelievable nuisance of myself. We do not have any official images from the production yet but a behind the scenes shot of Archibald with his ladies will suffice for now. The Drownsman reunites a few from the Antisocial team. Michelle Mylett will take the lead again, this time as Madison. Antisocial writer Chad Archibald gets back...

Cineteca Nacional's 55 Muestra: BLUE IS THE WARMEST COLOR, ONLY GOD FORGIVES, BLUE JASMINE And More!

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 08:30 PM PDT

Mexico City's Cineteca Nacional is home of the annual Muestra Internacional de Cine (International Showing of Cinema), a selection with some of the most important films of the year. The Muestra is arguably the most anticipated film celebration in Mexico's capital city; it's a tradition that remains important since we don't have a festival as big as Morelia or Guanajuato. The 55th edition of the Muestra kicks off on Friday, November 8, and you can already check out the complete lineup. This year's selection is one of the best I can recall, offering the latest work of Nicolas Winding Refn, Abdellatif Kechiche, Kore-eda Hirokazu, Woody Allen, Claire Denis, and much more! Posted: 29 Oct 2013 07:00 PM PDT

The story revolves around a pair of Chilean women hired as guides to take a team of international engineers into the wild to conduct a survey for a proposed dam. But what they find are the ghosts of warriors slain in battle five hundred years before.Take a look at the trailer below....

Breast Shots! Penis Shots! Dead Reindeer Shots! It Can Only Be The Trailer For KILL BULJO 2!

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 06:22 PM PDT

Hide the women and children! The Dead Snow crew have returned to their first creation and no deer is safe!Prior to their massive international success with Dead Snow, director Tommy Wirkola and writer-star Stig-Frode Henriksen hit the big screen in Norway with Kill Buljo, a film that (obviously) started off as a Kill Bill parody and veered off from there. Wirkola has moved out of the director's chair for this new sequel - Dead Snow co-star Vegar Hoel directs in his stead - but is very much present as a writer, producer and co-star (he's the other guy with the bad mustache in the trailer) along with Henriksen and the rest of those responsible for the first one and this second offering is even bigger...

Review: FREE BIRDS Hits Plymouth Rock Bottom

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 04:06 PM PDT

In a rare occurrence, American narcissism trumps Hollywood's modern global cash-grab mentality, but still maintains all the lowest common denominator tropes of the latter with Free Birds - an obnoxious 3D animated children's misfire that's throwing its gizzard in the ring for title of "perennial Thanksgiving classic." Never mind that Thanksgiving is an essentially American holiday, leaving viewers in the rest of the world (as these sorts of films are ordinarily shamelessly engineered to innocuously play across the board) to wonder what the heck this holiday is, and what all the fuss is about. This is a turkey of a film for the whole MSG-addled family, undercooked to imperfection. Earlier this year, the 3D computer-animated movie Turbo drew criticism for being so far fetched...

Beautifully Atmospheric First Tease For Ben Aston's HE TOOK HIS SKIN OFF FOR ME

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 03:30 PM PDT

It was back in July that we first wrote about Ben Aston's crowdfunding campaign for his short film project He Took His Skin Off For Me. Adapted from a short story by Maria Hummer it picks one hell of a striking image to sum up the lengths that couples will go to to appease one another and the resentments that inevitably accrue as a result. "Is this what you want? he asked, and I said yes, so he took his skin off for me."He hangs the loose skin in the closet and comes downstairs to join his girlfriend at the dinner table. This whole thing seems like a good idea.  He's become what she always wanted him to be. But it's not all perfect. It's...

DVD Review: THE GARDEN OF SINNERS Is Insanely Demanding Yet Rewarding

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 01:00 PM PDT

A (now out-of-stock), limited edition DVD box set of the anime movie series The Garden of Sinners (Kara no Kyōkai) recently hit the shelves in Australia. What would prompt a purchase of this expensive lavish set? Perhaps some background is required first for all those curious about why this is a big deal.Originally a light novel omnibus, this dark exercise in storytelling was adapted into an anime film series, the first of which premiered across Japanese theaters on December 1, 2007. The second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh chapters were released shortly after. A new limited edition DVD box set was released in late 2012 and has sold out worldwide. Now it is Australia's turn as Madman Entertainment have recently released the series in...

Review: Slavoj Žižek Remains Hopeful in THE PERVERT'S GUIDE TO IDEOLOGY

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT

Why is it easier for us to visualize the end of the human race, than the end of the free-market capitalism? This is the driving question behind the latest collaboration between Slavoj Žižek, the superstar philosopher/psychoanalyst/cultural critic of our time and director Sophie Fienne's in their new documentary, The Pervert's Guide to Ideology. It's their second film since the widely successful The Pervert's Guide to Cinema in 2006. Clocking at 135 minutes, Ideology is arguably less entertaining than its predecessor despite the charming presence of the famed philosopher in several iconic movie backdrops, gesticulating wildly and sounding like the Eastern European Sylvester the Cat. But this film is a denser, more serious examination of our consumerist society that asks many of the important questions of...

Jackie Chan Is Back With Stellar Trailer For POLICE STORY 2013!

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 11:30 AM PDT

Well, hello Jackie. It's nice to see you. And your fists. And your feet. And your face getting punched. And your car flying through the air. Yes. Yes, indeed. If you're looking for a bit of old school action done right then you can do an awful lot worse than the just released trailer for Jackie Chan star vehicle Police Story 2013. Directed by Little Big Soldier helmer Shen Ding, expectations have been high for this one given that Little Big Soldier is one of the absolute best pieces of work in the later period Chan catalog. And this trailer certainly delivers up to those expectations with a ton of excellent stunt work that does not sacrifice performance in the process. This latest Police Story has no...

X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST: Watch The Horrid First Trailer Now

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 10:15 AM PDT

Who's up for the glittery teen romance version of The X-Men? Because that appears to be what director Bryan Singer has in store for us with X-Men: Days Of Future Past. Sentinels? Nope. Clenched hands and wet eyes and pregnant pauses building up to a lot of nothing? You bet. Approach this from virtually any angle - performances, editing, score - and it feels like Singer is making a romance rather than a mutant powered action film. While Brett Ratner nearly killed the X franchise by making ... well, by making the Ratner version of an X-Men film it appears that Singer is doing his very best attempt at killing it here by making the Twilight version. You like your mutants with a healthy dose...

After DEAD SHADOWS, Check The Concept Art For David Cholewa's THE DARK ZONE And BLACK GATE

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 09:30 AM PDT

Director David Cholewa is something of an anomaly within the French film industry, an outsider who has chosen to work away from the big studios and established companies and instead set up his own production label to handle his own projects for the simple reason that he loves above all else the sort of unapologetic genre fare that the French mainstream tends to turn its nose at. Cholewa's Dead Shadows proved a modest success and so he's now hard at work on a pair of other projects, one of which is written by iconic cult figure Richard Stanley. Check the artwork and details on both below....

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 08:30 AM PDT

Though Gordon Chan's martial arts fantasy The Four may not have set the world on fire it is certainly not without its fans and it performed well enough at the box office to trigger a full trilogy of films with the second now gearing up for release in Hong Kong and China.Anthony Wong, Collin Chou, Chao Deng and Crystal Liu all return for what promises - again - to be a throwback to the dark magic infused martial arts fantasies of the 80s, only with much better VFX. Viennale 2013 Review: STORY OF MY DEATH Is One Of The Most Realistic Fantasy Films Ever Made

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT

In a feverish childhood dream one might imagine what it would be like if Casanova met Dracula. Albert Serra made this meeting a filmic reality in his Story of My Death that won the Golden Leopard in Locarno and was presented during the Viennale 2013. It is quite a unique fantasy trip that emerges in front of the audience combining death and desire in beautiful and innocent surroundings. The movie is permeated with elegant lighting and pitch-black shadows, in a way that makes erotic desire seem more dangerous than actual violence.Every shot looks like a painting and nevertheless Serra delivers the most minimalistic approach on a period piece imaginable. That is precisely because it is not a film about the time and place it is...

THE KINGDOM OF DREAMS AND MADNESS: Poster Art For New Ghibli Documentary

Posted: 29 Oct 2013 07:30 AM PDT

2013 would have been an incredible year for Studio Ghibli fans if it wasn't for company maestro Hayao Miyazaki announcing his retirement from making feature films. Miyazaki's own The Wind Rises (Kaze Tachinu) was released in July and on November 23rd Takahata Isao's The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Kaguyahime no Monogatari) will be hitting theatres. If that wasn't enough Japanese fans are also being treated to a documentary, due for release on November 16th, entitled The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness (Yume to Kyoki no Oukoku). The film looks at the working life of the directors and that of fellow Studio Ghibli founder Suzuki Toshio. Check out the Japanese flyer for the film below....
