Tokyo 2013: OF HORSES AND MEN Director Benedict Erlingsson On Divorcing Theatre and Marrying Film

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 03:00 PM PDT

Benedict Erlingsson has been a successful stage director, author and actor for years in his native Iceland, Lars von Trier fans may even recognize him from 2006's The Boss of It All. His debut feature film, Of Horses and Men follows the people of a remote farming region through the eyes of the horses they live and work with. It's a confident debut from a clearly very experienced artist. Black humor is intertwined with scenes of courtship, rivalry's and survival in its episodic narrative. Erlingsson picked up the Best Director award for his efforts at the Tokyo Film Festival where I managed to catch up with him.The black comedy which runs throughout the film works so well, do you come from a comedy background?Well we...

Kickstart This! Alex Karpovsky in FOLK HERO & FUNNY GUY

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 02:30 PM PDT

Alex Karpovsky will star in Folk Hero & Funny Guy as a struggling stand-up comedian who goes on tour with his successful singer-songwriter friend -- but in order to make that happen, some crucial seed money is needed. Granted, the idea of a comic road trip movie is fraught with peril, and contributing to any indie film requires a leap of faith, but here are three reasons why I'm putting my money where my mouth is and donating to this project: (1) The pitch video, featuring writer/director Jeff Grace, is breezy and funny. (2) Karpovsky, a talented actor and filmmaker, is a compelling presence, even when he's playing a character I find loathsome, as in Lena Durham's HBO series Girls. (3) Ryland Aldrich is producing....

The Producer Of THE CONJURING And Writer Of BURIED Team For THE ATTICUS INSTITUTE

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 01:30 PM PDT

Producer Peter Safran made a huge splash in the horror world with The Conjuring and he's hoping to do it again with Buried writer Chris Sparling's feature directorial debut The Atticus Institute. Dr. Henry West founded The Atticus Institute in the early 1970s to test individuals expressing supernatural abilities -- E.S.P., clairvoyance, psychokinesis, etc. Despite witnessing several noteworthy cases, nothing could have prepared Dr. West and his colleagues for Judith Winstead. She outperformed every subject they had ever studied -- soon gaining the attention of the U.S. Department of Defense, who subsequently took control of the research facility. The more experiments they conducted on Judith, the clearer it became that her abilities were the manifestation of evil forces within her, prompting the government to take...

Billions Of Rupees Explode On Screen In The DHOOM 3 Theatrical Trailer

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 12:30 PM PDT

India's biggest action franchise is back with its third installment. Dhoom 3 marks the return of Jai (Abhishek Bachchan) and Ali (Uday Chopra) as Mumbai cops who love drama and giant explosions. Joining them this go around as the "anti-hero", I think that means villain in this case, is Bollywood megastar Aamir Khan. Khan's addition to the cast, as well as the casting of Katrina Kaif in the lead actress position, means that at the very least Dhoom 3 is probably one of the most expensive Bollywood films ever made, and that's before a single car even explodes. We ran the teaser here a few weeks ago and I was quite unimpressed. This time around, however, I see a glimmer of hope. While not on par...

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 11:00 AM PDT

We have been outspoken fans of Donovan Marsh's South African action flick iNumber Number in these parts and are greatly looking forward to the original film's eventual release on US screens - and, yes, US distribution is in place, though not yet announced - and that release is sure to attract more notice now with word that Universal Pictures have optioned the film for remake.Chris Morgan - the go to writer for the Fast And Furious franchise since Justin Lin took over the reins - and Emile Gladstone will produce the film for Universal via their Chris Morgan Productions with Aram Tertzakian from XYZ Films [where, yes, I am also a partner though I have no real involvement in this one at all other than...

Interview: Albert Serra Reflects On His Feelings About STORY OF MY DEATH

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT

During the Viennale I sat down with Albert Serra, whose Story of My Death recently won the Golden Leopard at the Locarno Film Festival. Due to the fact that one can easily find comments of the director about his working methods and contents, I wanted to ask him more about the emotional side of his films. We ended up discussing his view on cinema, emotional layers of his film and why cinema is part of a subversive lifestyle.I want to do this interview a little bit different than usual because you have talked so much about your content, methods and process in your latest interviews that I think we should talk a bit more about the feelings in your film. In my opinion it is a...

Destroy All Monsters: Regarding Prosthetic Vaginas

Posted: 30 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT

On the subject of prosthetic genitals, as used in a lesbian sex scene: what's the difference? The iceberg of conversation around Blue Is The Warmest Colour has the movie (as a movie) at its tip, while everything below the water line is about the film's six minute sex scene between its two principal characters, played by Adèle Exarchopoulos and Léa Seydoux. Consistently throughout the massive, massive, nauseatingly massive discourse around Blue's sex scene, there is always one proviso provided: but, everyone takes pains to point out, Exarchopoulos and Seydoux were wearing prosthetic genitals, lovingly sculpted from their actual genitals, but not, you know, their actual genitals. So it's not real sex. It is in that proviso - the sly cuckolding of the entire conversation about...
