Lee Kuan Yew Pleads INSANITY For Huang Xiaoming And Lau Ching Wan Posted: 09 Oct 2013 04:08 AM PDT Hong Kong veteran filmmaker Derek Yee is turning mentor for his latest project, shepherding first-time writer-director Lee Kuan Yew through psychological thriller Insanity. Huang Xiaoming is set to star, as a young hotshot psychiatrist, who comes face to face with a violent yet devilishly intelligent psychopath, played by Lau Ching Wan. While this is Lee's first time in the director's chair, he is already a well-known and respected member of Hong Kong's film industry, serving as Assistant Director for Tsui Hark, Andrew Lau and Derek Yee himself over the years.Lee apparently first showed the script for Insanity to Yee in 2008, and has spent the past five years reworking it to meet Yee's expectations. Clearly the veteran director behind One Nite In Mongkok, Protege and The... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
More Donnie Yen Whoop-Ass In The Latest SPECIAL ID Trailer Posted: 08 Oct 2013 07:20 PM PDT How many fight reels and trailers do the producers of Donnie Yen fight flick Special ID intend to release? There appears to be no end in sight but when they look as good as every one of these has so far it's hard to quibble. Yes, there is a bit of too-obvious wire assist in some of the falls and throws in the latest trailer - cheekily dubbed the Ultimate Edition Trailer - but, even so, complaining about it feels petty given that everything else about it continues to make the argument that Special ID may prove to be in the top handful of titles from Yen's entire career. Take a look at this latest effort below.... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

The Stack: HOUSE OF WAX 3D, 100 BLOODY ACRES, THE CROODS, THIS IS THE END and more... Posted: 08 Oct 2013 01:30 PM PDT Welcome back to The Stack! This week we're dividing the show into two separate episodes so I can finally catch up from Fantastic Fest. Look for October 8 releases to be covered on Wednesday October 9. In the mean time enjoy this reminder of what hit home entertainment October 1. Highlights for me were the final emergence of House of Wax (1955) on 3D Blu-ray. It has all the awesome extras the outstanding DVD did including the 1933 version of Mystery of the Wax Museum starring Lionel Atwill. Thanks Warner Bros. The Croods surprised me by being one of the best animated films of the year. Funny, heartwarming and absolutely gorgeous to look at. Thanks Dreamworks. Lastly the 1925 anti-war effort The Big Parade is beautifully... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |

Get To Beyond Fest For The L.A. Premieres Of WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL, A FIELD IN ENGLAND & More Posted: 08 Oct 2013 12:00 PM PDT While Los Angeles routinely receives a healthy dose of genre fare from such institutions as The Cinefamily and The New Beverley, it's pretty rare to get a full-on, honest-to-goodness festival to exclusively present us with the more subversive, grotesque and just plain gnarly cinematic offerings making the rounds today. Enter Beyond Fest. Things kicks off October 9th, and run thru the 31st at both American Cinematheque locations: The Egyptian in Hollywood and The Aero in Santa Monica. An eclectic and bold mix of L.A. premieres of 2013 festival faves and retrospectives, Beyond Fest sounds to be a most welcome addition to the slate of cinema going events in our city of angels. Already sold out, but worth a mention just to prove how cool this... [Read the whole post on twitchfilm.com...] |
Denmark's KEEPER OF LOST CAUSES Posts Best Opening Weekend In A Decade Posted: 08 Oct 2013 10:00 AM PDT So, let's say it's 2010 and you're Danish director Mikkel Norgaard. You've just made the step into feature films with the big screen outing of popular television series Klown - which you previously directed six full seasons of - and it's proven a hit. A huge hit, in fact, posting the best box office numbers that Denmark has seen in a good many years. What do you do next?Well, what Norgaard did is tackle the adaptation of Jussi Adler-Olsen's hugely popular Department Q crime novels with The Keeper Of Lost Causes. And all that's done is open to the largest first week domestic box office totals that Denmark has seen in a decade, driving Norgaard's own Klown down into the number two spot in the... Busan 2013 Review: ROUGH PLAY Reveals The Darkest Ego Posted: 08 Oct 2013 08:30 AM PDT Rough Play had its world premiere at Busan this week, and for a film with a commercial K-Pop heartthrob lead Lee Joon, you can certainly tell it was penned by Kim Ki-duk. The official synopsis pitches the film as a quasi-sequel to the Kim written and produced Rough Cut. This is misleading as the film actually has very little in relation to that previous film. Fortunately this does not detract from its bold story which plays out as a fourth wall shattering, vanity project within a vanity project, all wrapped up in American Psycho's garbs. Aspiring unknown actor Oh Young (Lee) aims for stardom with a can-do attitude and care for the craft. He is recognized in his smaller roles for his professionalism and charisma.... New York Film Fest 2013 Review: THE MISSING PICTURE, A Hauntingly Poetic Work of Emotional and Historical Archeology Posted: 08 Oct 2013 08:00 AM PDT Cambodian filmmaker Rithy Panh has devoted his career to documenting the brutal horrors perpetrated on his homeland by the genocidal Khmer Rouge regime, who for four nightmarish years from 1975 to 1979 subjected the citizens under their control to forced migration from the cities, detention in labor caps and prisons, torture, starvation and execution. This resulted in the deaths of around two million people and the near eradication of Cambodian culture and recorded history. Panh, in such powerful documentaries as S-21: The Khmer Rouge Killing Machine (2003) and Duch, Master of the Forges of Hell (2012), tells the story of the victims of the Khmer Rouge and confronts the perpetrators of crimes against humanity.Rithy Panh's latest film, The Missing Picture, which won the top prize...
